Prayer is for the benefit of those who continuously submit and obey the teachings(and commandments) of Jesus Christ. Those are those to whom the promise that every prayer will be answered is given by Jesus Christ.

There is a need for prayer. I personally wouldn't pray over my food since there is no need to do that at all. Jesus Christ did say that those who belong to Him will eat poison and it will not harm them, so really no need to pray over my food.

However, I would ask God for things I desire or need and the whole since I am not allowed by God to work for any of it, my daily perishable bread ,that is.
