Meaning, the person talking is not sure. For it is either he is 2 times his age 5 yrs ago or he is not (maybe 3 times or 8 times his age 5yrs ago or his age has not changed), which is it? For we don't know, so how can you be so unsure?

Secondly, did his age change in an unusual way during the past 5 years? How is this important? We all know that every year, one year is added to a person's age, so what is the big deal about "5 years ago"?

Which "was"?

Is it the "was" before he was 5yrs ago"? Or the "was" after "5yrs ago"?
