Simple. It took over the structures of the old Russian empire, and the Russian dominated Red Army then went on conquest of countries like Armenia, Azerbajan, Georgia, and eventually Estonia and Latvia and Lithuania.A discussion would be too long for this thread.

Also, don't defend Russia, US, or any of them. There is no perfect nation. Every nation has its interests. Russia or the US would bomb this country if it justified their interests.
