A doctor is not meant to have authority over a Nurse. They are colleagues, not boss and employee. And a Doctor is meant to clean up after him or herself after a procedure, not to wait for a Nurse to that for him. Cleaning up after a procedure is not a Nurses procedure. Hollywood movies have made the public believe that Nurses are surbodinates to doctors. This isn't so
Why are there "scrub nurses" in the theatre if it is never anybody else's duty to clean up after d doctor?
What is their job?
What is the job of the attendants attached to the wards?
Agreed nurses are colleagues to doctors but THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A LEADER IN EVERY TEAM which in this case is the doctor.
A ship which doesn't have a captain will sink or run aground.
Patients come to the hospital to see d doctor not nurses, not lab scientists not pharmacists.
Drs now decide, you should go to the ward, you should go to the lab,you should go to the pharmacy.
If a patient doesn't make it,nobody blames the nurse, nobody blames the lab scientist cos they all claim they carry out the instructions of the doctor, so how can they be running shoulders with Drs claiming equal?
A lot of times Patients come to hospitals with complaints, they're reassured and sent home without any test or drug, that shows you the hospital is centered on doctors and patients.

Nurse locks doctor up at Obafemi Awolowo University teaching hospital (oauth) over a claim that the doctor did not clean up after performing a surgery procedure on a patient.

Good afternoon Nurses.

I just spoke with the said Nurse now on phone (Nurse Aderonke Oluyede) who tried to stop the Doctor from leaving the ward until she clean up the mess she made.

I am sure by now you must have seen the pictures of the mess the Doctor made after attending to the patient. They left various sharps, Blood substances, Cannulars, intubation valves etc on the patient Bedsides which is a health Hazard.

The Nurse made it clear the CMD of the Hospital was called to see the mess and the CMD Condemned it.

The Osun Waste Management board was called to see the waste as well and they categorically said the Nurse was acting right.

The Hospital Security personnel where called as well and they equally testify the Nurse was acting right.

This Nurse acted in the best interest of her patients according to the Hospital waste disposal Policy of the hospital.

We have to be aware that this waste was left on the patient bedside by this Doctors.

Yet they are claiming they are going on strike.

Also be aware the video circulating on social media didn’t capture the full details where the ARD Chairman was insulting the Nurse and calling her “You common Nurse”

We are calling on the NNANNM president comrade Nnachi Michael E. And the Unit NANNM chairman to step into this matter by issuing a Warning strike as well.

Last week we saw how a Nurse was beaten up by one Dr Ikeya Atinko of National Hospital Abuja and today we a Nurse is currently facing humiliation.

Who is the Next Nurse to be victims of these Hippocratic Doctors in Nigeria?

We are calling on massive support for Nurses who are undergoing victimisation in their work place.

How will any sane person leave this behind and expect another professional to dispose the waste for him or her. It is not done in any sane country, whoever generates waste disposes of it.

Trust some moronic Nigerians who don't know any better to support what the dirty negligent Dr did because they don't know any better.
In civilized countries the Dr dares not try that with a health assistant that has just SSCE qualification because he will be joking with an incident report written against him
If this is the state of the waste, I don't think is right. They should have even used the dustpan down sef.

Nigerian Doctors can be funny at times. How does someone discard your sharps for you.

Nigerian nurses are funnier, how can you become a police officer because of Johesu.

Dentist are probably the funniest. They go into hiding when Doctors Bleep up. When Doctors ask for pay increase the jump out of nowhere claiming to be medical doctors.

Make them just sell Nigeria health sector for e-bay or Amazon prime

For those of you supporting doctors against nurses, you must have watched too much Nollywood ,and better still not exposed . FYI, nurses are not doctor's servant, they both are professionals with different responsibilities. It's in a bleeped up country like Nigeria you will see Doctors acting Lord and all,and the citizens too don't even know the difference.
They said d nurse was acting right by locking up the doctor? grin grin

Why do there seem to be an unnecessarily competition from Nurses against Doctors,
Everybody is blaming the Doctor for leaving behind the equipments, okay if we assume she was supposed to do all the cleaning,
Although the post said she cleaned up some things,
And let us assume their is no cleaner trained in handling medical equipments which I doubt, because I see cleaners doing the cleaning for Doctors all the time, buh let me not argue with
“Generator should clean the Generated waste “crew

Why is no one talking about how wrong and hoodlum-like the attitude of the Matron is, who locked up a whole doctor, and we know she only did this because the said nurse is a House Officer that she can disrespect at Will and not a full blown resident Doctor
Why are Nurses always like this towards doctors
I swear there are people called porters at the emergency and theatres, whonare responsible for carrying all waste outside, so afr they have already been well disposed.
And looking at the argument at those saying you dispose what you use, that means doctors should be carrying all these waste to the incinerator for final disposal then.
Though, I'm not surprised they are mostly nurses, and they even left the partbof locking someone up.

Incident report does not cause sack, hope you know. He/she will only be asked to do retraining and reflection. A nurse detaining a doctor, and being told by her matrons and other to open the gate and she refuses will both trigger instant suspension, as well as police involvement. Not to talk about her unprofessional shouting.

There is no part of Civil Service Rules that state Doctor's are Nurse's boss....
Both are different healthcare field. No one is boss over the other.

Otunbakayce:
Yes, he too would be suspended as well. The issue is that the nurse was harassing the doctor and was prone to go violent if the doctor tried to make his/her way out.
Also a whole lot of the auxillary nurses on here are blabbing as if the doctor isn't their senior. In public service your seniority is not by age. Its by level and an average nurse level is level 6 for a school of nursing graduate and level 8 for a double qualified or university graduate nurse, while a doctor starting level is level 10. So why harass your senior colleague when you can Channel your grievances through the appropriate authority.

In that same OAUTHC, a consultant had insisted on not just discarding the waste she used but rinsing equipments up before other professionals would do the cleaning up and send for sterilisation. That's someone who knows what handling of wastes generated entails as a health professional.

It is the duty of the person who generates a waste to discard it...this OAUTHC one now still happened to be an hazardous one at that.
So I'm not in dispute of that. My dad was a General Surgeon in a very rural setting. Multiple rural settings in fact and he only trusted sterilisation and cleanup that he had done. I'm fully in support of cleaning up after oneself as a medical practitioner. And I see where the Matron is coming from. My question was more about the Matron picking on a female HO. I believe I heard that there was a Reg and Senior Reg for the procedure. Why did she not lock them up and insist they clean up. Why did she go after a lowly house job doc who for all intents and purposes is an intern and probably does not know her left from her right?

If you like go and hug the transformer. Enough is enough in Nigeria , we cannot have stupid and arrogant people as nurses again. The private practice nurse are far better than you lots who do nothing in most government hospitals rather than playing useless politics and attending cooperative society meetings . 75% of the day roaming aimelessly around the hospital premises and talking to patients and their families anyhow
Those thick bottomed and shapeless matrons just sit in the nursing bay from morning to afternoon doing nothing but gossiping about how an 'ordinary' house officer earns so so.
And they're the ones who indoctrinate d younger ones on how to perennially be rude to doctors.
Nothing de do other than harass patients ,patients relatives and the attendants working under them.
That is why 99% of them are morbidly obese cos they do next to nothing while every doctor is on his foot from the time you enter your house till when you leave.

So what did they teach them in nursing school?? How to lock doctor who didn't clean up??

What exactly is then the job of a nurse in the theater, to come and b gisting inside?

You are right to say that the ladies acted based on professional rules but there are instances rules are bent on common sense. Even at the court of law rules are bent by the justice. There are times 6 years jail time crimes are given a year depending on what led to the crime. Example: a hopeless hungry orphan stealing food. He committed the crime but for survival.
Many lives have been lost to rigidity of people at the helms of affairs simply because of some rules they should use their common sense to apply.

For instance robbers struck at an area and the victim was rushed to the hospital the doctor heard that it was true the incident happened but declined to treat the victim until police report is obtained by the good Samaritan. Before theyld process police report the victim gave up.
The doctor is stupid observing a stupid rule.

Wtf! Which college of medicine you go bruv? I wan check something.
If he was to tired then he will go get a rest and come back to clean.
Nurses too get tired.
Nurses ain't doctor's slave. How do y'all even think? Why the whole superiority thing?
I guess you are an angry nurse and I understand that.

But you are letting your anger cloud your judgement.

So let me expantiate.

First, I did not mention or imply in any way that nurses should clean up after the doctor. Instead, I said such jobs should be given a role, a cleaner to handle it. The reason is simple. After a session, the team might probably be too tired to start cleaning and what if they lost the patient? they might not even have it in them to start cleaning at that moment.

Such scenerios means that someone else should be available to take care of the cleaning. It could be a cleaner trained specifically for that role or a student nurse or a nurse but who has been briefed and accepted that that will be her role.

But in all cases, someone else ought to handle the role.

Secondly, you talk about doctors having pride, but you are the doing shouting upandan on how no one should be able to give you directives on this or that. Please rest.

Just as you said, doctors and nurses have different roles. If they do then, there should be someone whose role it will be to clean up after every session just as it is in the library whose role it is to return books to the shelves.

Thirdly, It is wrong to hear a medical practitioner saying that they should have left the equipments until a later time. Says a lot about your work ethics which I am willing to let slide because again, I believe your percieved anger is clouding your judgement.

Fourthly, What that nurse did was totally wrong and should be punished for it. It was not her role to clean up after the doctor, neither was it her role to enforce the clean up. Yet she took it upon herself to lock the doctor up.

Please, while fighting for equality, let's learn to keep our emotions aside and be able to differentiate wrong from right, else you become the very monster you are trying to fight. Yes, it is wrong to insurbodinate nurses, but what this nurse did is totally wrong and punishing her for her wrong is not victimizing nurses.

Oh, btw, I am in benue college of health sciences.

I am a doc. This is unacceptable not because of hierarchy but locking that door is imprisonment of a health professional in the discharge of her duty. For the entire ARD to strike they know what happened is bad. Now back to the life long nurse doctor discord. Whether this nurse like it or not, hierarchy exists in medicine. With the doctor even if that doctor has only spent one day in the profession as head. It is like the military. This hierarchy exists because there needs to be a clear line of command obedience to save lives. Now to the question of who cleans up after a surgery. Theatre nurses are called scrub nurse for a reason. They are in charge of basic set up before the surgery, assisting in handing instruments and cleaning afterwards. Simple and plain. The matron needs to be sanctioned and anywhere in the world the same will follow. And charges can even be pressed against her for imprisonment in sane environments.
dora7891

Pls , tell us the duty of a theater Nurse. Let's start from there.
