While goodmen died fighting suicidal ISWAP terrorists in soft skin vehicles money meant for weapons acquisition and troops welfare where been siphoned off by leading generals. What is it with every set of Service Chiefs after they leave office we hear of humongous amounts of defence money stolen. If this is confirmed to be true this Burutai deserve to be court martialed and shot in broad day light. What a betrayal of his men. Who knows how many more is hidden by him and the other Generals, Admirals and Air Marshals that served with him.

Gentlemen, frankly I guess I'm getting more and more tired of Nigeria. What happens here continue to abuse the mind. While we are commending Buhari's administration for its massive support for the military official corruption still plagues the sector in fact all sectors in Nigeria. This Buhari reincarnation is not the one we used to know because under his inept presidency the worst forms of corruption are taking place under his nose.

We desperately need a modern thinking administration in Abuja 2023 and discard all this old set of analogue leaders. Deep inside me I fume at the modest pace of our military modernization because I know if the right guy is in Aso Rock the NAF could be flying the 5th Gen. US Lockheed Martin F-35 Aggressors.

For some reason, I thought the 54 had more payload weight than the 480kg quoted?
The original yahbon United 40 MALE according to sources can carry a payload of 1,000kg . With 10 hard points . 100 kg max charge for each one . But they say in sources that the 1,000kg payload includes two gyro-stabilised gimballed camera platforms and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). A sonar system .

And the algerian modified version al djazair 54 , 55 have better optronics and radar communications systems .

But even with 480 kg , it can take 10 AR1 missiles on its 10 hard points , 45 kg per missile .

Interesting times: Pres Ramaphosa skipped the Commonwealth Summit as he's attending the virtual BRICS Summit. Then off to the G7 in Germany tomorrow, where I'm sure he and India's PM Modi will again be lobbied on their 2 countries' neutrality on Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Bear in mind that 2 of our usual naval exercises- IBSAMAR with India and Brazil, OXIDE with France - will be held this year and participating assets are being readied.

Exercise IBSAMAR Main Planning Conference in Gqeberha.

Signal Unit Eastern Cape hosted the Exercise IBSAMAR Main Planning Conference from 6 to 10 June in Gqeberha. The Conference brought together representatives from Brazil and India as well as planners from all services and divisions to make the exercise a success.

Exercise IBSAMAR is a multinational naval exercise between the South African Navy, Brazilian Navy and Indian Navy. The exercise is planned to take place in the Algoa Bay area from 10 to 23 October 2022.

Planning on track for Exercise Oxide 2022
SA Navy (SAN) fleet headquarters in Simon’s Town next week welcomes a three officer French Armed Forces delegation for an Exercise Oxide mid-term planning session.

This year’s exercise is set for November after cancellations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions.

That there would be a joint Franco/South African naval exercise this year was made known last month (April) when the French task force Jeanne d’Arc 2022 ported in Cape Town during a five-month deployment focussed on training cadets from the French Naval College (École Navale).

Preferring to leave the nuts and bolts of the exercise as regards serials to the host country’s national defence force, De Lapeyriere said the intention is to “dedicate” air and naval assets to Oxide 2022.

“South Africa and France, as Indian Ocean nations, share common interests including maritime security to a wide extent in their respective EEZs (exclusive economic zones and illegal trafficking.

“This exercise is important to France and an opportunity to improve our ability to operate bilaterally on operations such as intervention, surveillance, disaster relief, anti-pollution and search and rescue (SAR) where military units are required,” he said.

As an head of state, he did the right thing. The commonwealth meeting is centered on ideology, policy and governance while BRICS is purely an economic meeting.

Nobody lobbies for political favor at BRICS. Just like G20, it is not a political alliance. India and China are at logger heads and there are deep rooted ideological differences between all those countries, but it doesn't matter since we're talking economy and mutual benefits here. The only scary thing was because it happened to fall in with the war in Ukraine.

As for G7 do you mean Russia lobbying SA? Because Russia was removed from G7 in 2014.

Huh, the amount of tank turrets lying besides highways in Ukrain made me think our numbers are ridiculous even if we had 500 still wouldn't be enough... Or maybe we should invest more on ATGMs?

Yes alshabaab is definitely a spent force, back then their propaganda videos were actually scary, they almost looked like a conventional army without tanks or an Airforce or a navy. They numbered between 16k to 20k... Now estimates put them btn 6k to 10k after replanishing their numbers with new recruits who grow scanty everyday and have less training.. Infact the only thing that has kept them going was the influx of money and bomb experts from m.east who introduced new ways of making cheaper but more powerful IEDs including VBIEDs, this is what has been keeping them afloat, the IEDs do maximum damage with minimum force, then they spen the rest of the time studying and planning their next one time big large scale attacks to remind everyone they are 'still powerful'. We have reached a point I don't even think the rest of alshabaab needs an army to defeat them, AMISOM has won the ideological war, we don't need to fight them anymore, what we need to do is build roads, factories, hospitals and train their civil servants and civilian police to run local administration... Once people start getting paying jobs, youths would see alshabaab as the ones holding them back and not their saviours.

On military procurement, apart from the At-802u light attack aircraft, there isn't any major purchase that's on my radar.. I think Kenya put a break on major purchases because of the huge loans we took for the country's infrastructure, there just isn't any room to justify that kind of spending for the military, parliament would never aprove. Instead the military has been concentrating on low hanging fruits like enhancing local manufacturing for uniforms, boots, ammunition, rifles, military rations, improving training programs.. Bettering Soldier personal protection (it's very rare to see a soldier on the frontline without body armour today, it used to be be common occurrence in the past) We have also seen significant investment in soldier welfare systems... like housing, family support through education and medical cover for dependants , life insurance for soldiers KIA etc

Drone based mine/ied detection ( and even destroy them ) system could make a lot of difference especially for route opening patrol teams or any mobile unit for the matter

Cost effective too

Eg pic below is a mistral solutions 2 drone system which not only detects mines ieds but also eliminates them post detection

Technicals are really important for the modern day Army. No matter how advanced your armoured vehicle or Tank is, it would still be destroyed by the NLAW, Javelin and Kornet, at least 80% of the time.

Technicals are faster, provide better immediate situational awareness, allows soldiers to dismount quickly and are more easily repairable in the field, they consume less fuel/gas. These are the advantages they provide.

Disadvantages, 9 times out of 10, if ambushed all soldiers sitting in a technical will perish, IEDs will completely shred Technicals, they provide no armour.

What every responsible army should do is develop SOPs for the employment of Technicals in combat, also combine a healthy mix of armour (Tanks, IFVs, APCs and MRAP) with soft-skin vehicles.

Even you a driving the latest Tank, your vehicle can be destroyed just like the T-90M in Ukraine.

How about combining the technicals (some of them in a group) with

1. Drones for extended situation awareness in the vertical envelope and for tasks like mines/ied detection and mapping for opening safe routes etc , threat detection and generating real time ground situation picture for counter action etc etc

2. Onboard sensors for extended situational awareness in the horizontal envelope as a backup or secondary measure in support of the drones or incase drones incapacitated etc

This would keep the technicals out of the harms way more or less while increasing their combat effectiveness

Tactics will obviously matter here along with the creativity

Lot of time to be spend in the training grounds before everything works relatively fine

Rest will evolve as experienced gathered

Though to be fair easier said than done

This is a capability we already see the Nigerian army employ. This and other types of Technical based ISR capabilities, see attached photo.
