We Yoruba call it Iru or Eware and in almost all our soup it's a compulsory ingredients. Efo riro, ila or ila alasepo, Ewedu or Ewedu Alasepo, gbegiri, Egusi, Obe isapa and many others. This Iru must be added to bring out the life of the soup.

Do other tribes in Nigeria use this ingredient and what's it called in your dialect?

Nigerians in diaspora, do you get to use Iru in your soups too?

MissyB3

If I buy it in the market, do I need to wash it first before putting it into my cooking

But hope it's Iru Ekiti.... My state is prided for having the best Iru in the whole of SW cry grin.... I stand to be corrected tho
I served in Ekiti. I used to see this thing, but I can't stand the smell... Oh Lord! It was so nauseating. Anytime I go close to it, I feel like vomiting. Though, I heard it has so many health benefit. If not for the way it smells, I would have love to eat it.

My friend grandma will mix it with tried okra and pound...

my friend will bring it in a container to school and most times it will serve the whole semester...the mixture usually has a long shelf life.. doesn't get spoilt easily, could remain viable for long time...

The mixture smell cool..I ate it last semester too before ASUU strike... cheesy

It usually goes well together with hot smoking semovita,, grin...the combo is deliciously deadly grin

Apparently it's used by the three major tribes in Nigeria. I believe the Igbo method of processing is the best, as they grind it and wrap it well to prevent the stink. Some of you millennials pretending, continue okay. We all know what's up.

“ Nigerians and other Africans use Locust beans as a substitute for maggi cubes and add it to everything – not only because it tastes good and can serve as a tastier alternative to maggi cubes, but also due to its health benefits among which are vision improvement, digestion aid and much more”

I don’t play with Iru ooo!!

You are very ignorant.
Very very ignorant.
Aside from the West, all countries, I mean all countries of the world use different forms of that stinking food to make international cuisines.

Countries with highest iq like Japan, South korea eg has their own very stinking food which they use to cook with delish.

You probably don't know what probiotics are cos if you know, you will also know that you need probiotic more than you need any other thing.

You can only get probiotics through fermented foods like iru, ogiri.
The way an average Nigerian take vitamin c is how an average south east Asian buy probiotic and drink in form of tablets. They live very long while you with your knorr cube filled with msg and fried chicken and chips or macdonald has average lifespan of 54yrs.

Typical comment of a very low iq human.
See how he and his likes rushed to comment on something they know nothing of.
Thanks sir for this enlightening post. Can you please elucidate more on this common claim that iru helps in ones eyesight. And any other health benefits of iru? Thanks in advance.

The seasoning cubes/powders we av all over av a deadly ingredient called 'msg'. Pls read up about it.
I personally know thru caring for seniors citizens around me dt high blood pressure patients fare better when msg is eliminated from their food. My aunt's bp will obviously rise in d monitor jst few hrs after consuming anything containing msg. I also remember a family friend who used to sweat on his palms only when he consumed meals containing bouillon cubes.
Remember d times of vedan, ajinomoto,A1,etc., d media&everyone made us all flee cos of this same ingredient. Now msg is back in attractive packaging.
Y I always pity ppl who are fond of eating out or indulging in instant noodles.
Hence, d reason for encouraging ppl to use local/natural condiments, of which iru is one.
