I wonder about the weird chatter I saw online this morn about some people wondering how Minions got a blockbuster opening weekend. Some were even trying to downplay it's impact wondering why teens or young adults care about the movie.

I find such takes dumb, especially when the previous movies have always done big at the BO as well as billion dollar grosses for the last two films.

Late this year till 2023 is the battle for movies with actor led blockbusters. I'm glad movies with top talent directors with cast driven original projects is back on the menu, instead of the IP films we've been fed for the past 5 years.

I think next year we feeding good especially with original top billed fare. Will reduce the complaints or feel of oversaturation with IP movies.

Disgusting accent aside...the trailer looks lit ngl. This is what Netflix was trying to do with "Amina" albeit with a lesser budget.

Couldn't agree more.
Have you watched the Amina movie? I just know I loved the trailer when I watched it but I haven't crossed paths with the movie link. I really love that event and want to see how it plays out.

I want to start seeing Hollywood telling TRUE African tales or OUR local producers start collaborating with them like EbonyLife/Netflix deal.
Not those appropriation we see Hollywood do regularly regarding the continent.

I still crave a decent budget tale of the Benin Empire at its height of influence. I've watched "IYore" and don't like how it ended for the Empire even tho it's partly true. That's one place where alternative history works best. grin

I really don't count these blacks with Nigerian names as one.
I don't see them as Diasporans especially when I don't see them share close ties with the Fatherland.

Diasporans I can gladly call Nigerians are the likes of Chimamanda, Chiwetel Ejiofor and to a lesser extent Anthony Joshua. Others with just the names na comma.

As for me, I want to start seeing one or two local Nigerian actors in projects like these.

Fun fact: Black Panther's Dora Milaje are based off of these women military unit— The "Dahomey Amazons".

can you help me identify the regional accent hollywood adopts in their african based films? E.g Wakanda, hotel rwanda, last king of scotland, black hawk down, coming to america, blood diamond.

They usually try to adopt West African accents or that of Nigeria. Also try to portray East African accent.

One of the very few films from Hollywood I will say nailed the accent thing to the core and believable was "Captain Phillips" starring Tom Hanks. It's also more believable when they try to use local dialect and not the forced African English accent.

Wakandan language is based on the Xhosa language, though M’baku spoke with an Igbo accent if there is anything like that.

I saw that Amina had gutter ratings and i dipped but the trailer looked so good so i was left figuring what went wrong.

Our local producers that have the reach to carve into the Netflix/Hollywood niche as of now it's those with proper links like Ebony and Ebony will rather waste Netflix's money on flamboyance and razz with a sappy story line.

But the proper link up of our stories (such Usman Dan fodio, Jaja of Opobo, Oba Esigie, Sango, etc) with Netflix/Hollywood money, props and production will be too lit if it happens.
