Major Demands Of ASUU That Led To The Strike by lalasticlala(m): 9:04pm On Jul 12, 2022
As shared by Deborah Tolu-Kolawole:

#ASUUStrikeUpdate
I have decided to list and explain the major demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities which led to the ongoing strike which commenced on February 14,2022.
Please help Retweet so that Nigerians can get informed. #Thread

-Only three of the demands have financial implications. However, only two have to do with lecturers.

-The payment of Earned Academic Allowance, Revitalisation Fund, the payment of withheld salaries are not negotiable.
The revitalization fund will be released to universities

-Major demands

One of the major demands is the demand for the deployment of the University Transparency Accountability System popularly known as UTAS.
UTAS was developed after ASUU got the permission from the government to develop an alternate system to the IPPIS

According to ASUU, the IPPIS doesn’t recognize some of the peculiarities in the NUS( Nigerian University System). Note that lectures in universities are entitled to allowances such as earned allowances, sabbatical allowances among others, IPPIS doesn’t recognize this

At the height of the ASUU strike of 2020, the minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige told ASUU that FG had agreed for the union to develop an alternate payment platform. UTAS was developed and according to plans, will be under the control of the NUC.

Unfortunately, the government is yet to accept UTAS despite the numerous tests conducted by NITDA. The government has continued to insist that UTAS failed integrity tests conducted by NITDA

Release of the white paper of visitation panels to Universities.
The Federal Government constituted a panel to look into the issues at various tertiary institutions in the country. It is believed that the report will help to know and understand the issues of NUS

Till now, the Federal Government has refused to release the report of the visitation panel. If released, the report may indict some VCs, officials among others

Proliferation of Universities.
Another concern of ASUU is the proliferation of universities by the government. According to ASUU, the government has no business establishing new universities if it can’t fund the existing universities.

ASUU wants to stop lawmakers who continue to present bills to create universities. According to a report by The PUNCH, over 186 bills were presented by the 9th NASS in four years for the creation of new universities. This is as existing universities remain underfunded.

Finally, the Renegotiation of the 2009 agreement. The truth is that if the president fails to sign the new agreement that has been drawn up, the union may not resume. Truth is that university lecturers have been on the same salary scheme since 2009. Despite rising inflation.

Don't be deceived; ASUU strikes will continue to reoccur until we force our leaders to make a law that kids of any public office holder must attend our public universities.
&any body that did not attend public university can not hold government public office. Such law is already in existence for NYSC.
Then we must vote for only leaders that will make such people-oriented laws. Our leaders must 1st demonstrate the patriotism they preach to us. kiss

The major things that led to this strike are:
1. The ASUU body is greedy, inconsiderate and harsh.
2. FG is heartless, evil and inconsiderate.
3. ASUU is FG, FG is ASUU.

It's really painful. What the children of the poor masses deserve and what they get is not in balance, it seems the gods are no much interested in fairness. Otherwise why would over a million students, who are supposed to be in school, be at home for over four months now? Meanwhile these men, who have done nothing to deserve the luxury they enjoy, travel out of the country every now and then to celebrate their graduating kids and rub it on our faces? In the space of two weeks we have seen Ben Murray Bruce, Wike Ezenyom and Buhari's granddaughter posing in colourful academic attainments.

Over here, we wake up to hear that ASUU and FG are currently having a meeting, and by evening ASUU will announce that they are unaware of any meeting. It takes a dogged fighter to keep this academic faith, honestly. How "four years course" became "for years course" is what I don't want to cry about anymore. There is God, and He sees everything.

Resilient ASUU can't be petrified by blackmail or divide and rule! Being on a salary scale of 2009 till now doesn't augur well for a country who wants the best for her educational sector.

The whole dichotomy and agitation on UTAS-IPPIs has been laid bare. How many times have they subjected IPPIS to test? UTAS scored 99.3%.

How can you be proliferating Universities while you haven't funded the ones in operation?

The Latin maxim of Nemo Dat Quod Non Habet says you can't give what you don't have. The public shouldn't expect any tangible result from modern education

Most of their demand legit makes sense ... Especially the one about creating more universities , it's of no use creating more when the current one aren't well functional

Everybody are just campaigning for one party or another for their own selfish interest, if not why are we even talking of another presidential election when the country isn't even working. We should be able to vote in leaders that can be held accountable for their wrong decision and not people who think they are gods and just do any how.

Oga, lets stop these 'YOUTH, YOUTH, YOUTH' things!

If we want to say it in all honesty, the Youth are Nigeria's biggest problem.

Wasn't it the youth that claimed they needed FRESH AIR for Jonathan in 2011? We all saw how billion dollars that have been saved went into private pockets.
In 2015, same youth wanted CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE and brought in Buhari upon us, we are where we are now with Buhari...

So lets stop saying YOUTH this, YOUTH that.. Sometimes, it's best you go with your heart and not the crowd!

Stay Guided!

This is where our government ruined our education system by turning it into a BUSINESS. They keep creating schools to make money, while the quality and value of our education drops to zero. They also give license to private individuals to builds higher institutions in every nooks and cranny of our states. THIS MUST STOP!

Na wa for waec. They should migrate to the IPPIS cos they cannot be above their employers. The system can be easily modified to capture their peculiarity.
