[quote author=Neddyogu post=114717682]Does that mean ASUU cannot be reasonable? Pegging wage increase at 109-185%? If u were in Ngige's shoe, where would u start negotiations from? How can I insist on the exclusion of ministers of relevant ministries whom u need their buy-in for ur proposal to fly? All the university union leaders are not yet ready to reopen schools especially ASUU.[/quote Is like you lack understanding: Let me explain to you the guy you quoted line of argument. If the federal government cannot rely on the Briggs committee negotiation, why did they set it up in the first place. And know you that this negotiation lasted for 3 good months. Initial ASUU refused to meet with the Briggs committee arguing that they want negotiate directly with their employer, FG. The federal govt refused, insisted that they meet with the committee Now the committee result is out and the same FG is doubting the integrity of the agreement . Tell me if ever you have even secondary education is it not clear to you that the FG is not sincere |

EMEKAodogwu1:Now if u had half a brain, u would know that the 2009 agreement and renegotiation is not the main bone of contention. Yar'Adua ignored it before he died, Jona thrashed it, now buhari has ignored it for 7yrs now. No govt would honor everything in that agreement. The main bone of contention is replacing IPPIS with UTAS or U3PS. That's not going to happen anytime soon buddy and the earlier u guys realise it, lick ur battle wounds and move on, the better for all. They will set up committee after committee and nothing will come off it. |

Neddyogu:Young man. The govt is not sincere not that they can’t solve the problem. If Buhari have a deep conversation directly with ASUU a common ground will be reached within a matter of days. I’m not in your league by October I’m already on my way to Zurich for my PHD, fully funded. I’m speaking out of concern |

ASUU should be considerate enough to work with the FG. How can they ask for 109 to 185 %wage increase, and according to Ngige excluding input from relevant government bodies, that would have made the Nimi Briggs committee recommendation acceptable. |

EMEKAodogwu1:SMH. So going to Switzerland makes u outta my league? U imagine u're the first to leave this country? October is still a long way off. Btw I had my M.Sc from Jena, Germany back in 2015 so cool it bro. U ain't shit |

Neddyogu:I’m already in the system, teaching in one of fed uni and I can tell you how urgently the system needs fixing. When you were in Germany didn’t you enjoy your study there? I repeat if the govt. sees education as a priority they can fix this shit in matter of days . If the years of looting and pillaging our national treasury didn’t bring down the roof , settling ASUU won’t either. Settle them and hold them accountable . I know a number of bright students that are about to graduate, this strike may cost them a session and by the time they will be through with NYSC they are above 25. And this, as simple as it seems will change the course of their career forever. |

sinkhole:So in essence they are using students' time to do their research and get promoted, while clamoring fr their salaries and mode of payment . As in they are using the students to push themselves to glory, so the strike is benefitting them after all, that's why they are not moved. And the foolish students believe they are fighting fr them. |

AAA593:The education system has really collapsed in Nigeria. What a country!!! I think the best thing to do in this critical period is to go study abroad See more here: https://setlinn.com/topics/forum/study-abroad/ |

Tonyferrad:If your sister is a federal university worker and not getting her salary prior to the strike, then something was wrong somewhere and her case must have been a peculiar one. All federal university workers who registered on IPPIS were getting paid promptly before the strike commenced. |

ASUU strike: When FG has no confidence in its renegotiation committees The federal government inaugurated Prof. Munzali Jubrin's renegotiation committee in December 2020. The Committee did its job and the Report was submitted in May 2021. The report was left gathering dust at the ministry of education after submission. Before then, there was the Babalakin Renegotiation committee that proposed the introduction of the tuition fee of between N350,000 to N500,000. The government only remembers Jubrin's committee report after ASUU declared a strike in February 2022, which was about 9 months later. They checked the report and were like, no the renegotiation must be renegotiated. They technically rejected what was negotiated on their behalf and the work done by those highly respected Nigerians ended in the Dustbin. Then, the FG inaugurated Prof. Nimi Briggs' renegotiation committee in March 2022 to renegotiate the renegotiated report with ASUU. They got 3 months to do the job. ASUU initially resisted meeting the Briggs' committee with a stand that the renegotiation was already concluded with the Jubrin's committee. I remember Ngige telling NLC to call ASUU to order. The second renegotiation is concluded and the Report was submitted last month (June 2022). Meanwhile, Ngige has been quiet but he came out today to reject what Prof. Nimi Briggs' committee has renegotiated on the government's behalf. He said there is no agreement yet with ASUU-FG. He said all alone with the Prof Briggs' Committee, ASUU started fixing their salaries and allowances to the exclusion of the statutory government ministries and agencies that manage the entire annual finances of the government. The FG doesn't trust the committee it set up to renegotiate. Most likely, the Briggs' committee report is also going to the dustbin. Buhari's government must be missing Babalakin. The government never had the intention to renegotiate with ASUU. They were just buying time with the inauguration of different renegotiation committees. When the committee was set up, just like it happened in 2020, Ngige urged ASUU to call off the strike while renegotiation continues. He asked NLC to call ASUU to order to return to class. He possibly thought ASUU is a union of dumb people. When ASUU did not pay attention to his rants, Ngige sent a memo to IPPIS to suspend the payment of the salaries of lecturers. This is the fifth month with salaries withheld. The idea is to use starvation to force the suspension of the strike. That still didn't work. They are now trying to use emotional blackmail that is not working. The president's "enough is enough" speech in Daura is one of the emotional blackmails that did not work, unfortunately. And Ngige said there is no agreement with ASUU yet on a day that the strike is 5 months old and rolling out some figures to blackmail ASUU. That ain't going to work. Mal Adamu Adamu, the education minister is quiet as usual. I was actually hoping the strike will end before the end of this month. But with the words of the president and Ngige, the Labour minister, it appears the journey is still far. The government has about 10 months to go. Let's wait for their next line of action in an attempt to prolong the renegotiation. Possibly they will set up another committee for the 3rd renegotiation of the renegotiated report. Dear Nigerians, especially the students, Buhari is a Muslim and Ngige is a Christian but they don't care that university students have spent 5 months at home and still counting. As you fight over the religion of politicians, just know that irrespective of their religion, you are not their priority. They are just using you. |
