How is this even possible?

An ND holder raking more naira than a Bsc holder in the same place of work..

Wonderful, really wonderful..
the music alone earned him that not his qualifications, and so it is when someone is good in oral English, music and some uncommon subject. they value them in private schools cos they can't be easily replaced unlike mathematics and English course. I Blame the op for revealing his findings to his colleagues, how do you expected the director to increase all their salary. every man for himself would have help him in his approach .it is not a government school where you're paid according to your qualifications. the law of demand works in the private schools sector...

I dnt think u understand me yet.How will recruit new staff immediately when he Fire them all(Not one)
Nobody’s disputing that he’s not the owner of the school/can do whatever he like.Let him try that I’m September and hire immediately
all the staff can never resign at the same time...
All of them will approach the director at once no doubt, but at the end of the day he will be left standing alone and feel betrayed. That's how humans are wired, they all have their own problem and to be approach in a comfortable way and time.
I rather betray the whole world than see the world whole world betray me....

Brother I was surprised. Not that he does anything special. The students hates him and they are complaining about his teaching methods. I've corrected him severally on certain calculations in physics.
You're wrong.

He must be doing something special which is why the school was ready to offer him more money to keep him from leaving!

In most private organisations your pay is mainly determined by the value you're bringing to the table and not necessarily by the qualifications you have.

You need to be solving a problem(s) and possess skills that are difficult to find in the labour market if you want to be able to demand higher pay and stand a good chance of getting it

So should I resign?
No, I do not say you should resign, instead, I want you to innovate in your role, if you are teaching Engineering related subject(s), look for something else (value proposition) to add that will bring more value to the school, e.g.
- Build a sports team in any area you have passion for,
- Start a Jet club or Science club for the school
- Start a debate society/Club in the school

Add something that will differentiate you from every other teacher , then keep doing that for a term or more, once the value is felt by the school, then approach the school for an upward salary review, you could even cite that another school has made you a higher offer.

Please note that this strategy will only work if you are deemed as a valuable staffer/teacher, if the school is just managing you and you try this strategy, they will thankfully dis-engage your service.

This is the best advice you need

Private Businesses are not run by emotions and sentiments.

Because you were earning 30k with the other guy who has moved to a new pay grade does not mean you will be paid same.
It is only in Nigeria civil service that FGN or State employer pay you based on certificate or age in service, for an entrepreneur , it is all about value you bring to the table.
You shared that the person now earning 45k though he studied Engineering teaches Music and Physic which is a solid combination and value-mix in a single teacher.

Have you tried to carve a niche for yourself or improve yourself by adding value in other field that will enhance the school productivity.

It is all about value and if you want to check how valuable you are , tender your resignation and see if the school will call you back for negotiation.

When I worked in Nigeria as a Telecom Engineer, I tendered my resignation and was called back to re-negotiate my salary and other benefits, not only did they match the other company pay, I was given the opportunity to lead global projects that allowed me travel to 3 continents.

LET START THINKING ABOUT VALUE WE BRING

To be factual with you, you made some mistake.
1. Your bargaining power during employment was not ok
2.If your child is in the school, As a staff you pay half or small amount which make you to have less chance of having an increase in salary
3.Under no circumstance should you check an official record you are not handling, if you do don't tell other cause it is a bad habit that bring enmity and it is a wrong practice as a teacher.
private school use divide rule mechanism and you should be careful.even some of your colleague in the school might be pretenders that will leave you when the matter cast if the school threaten to sack you for misconduct.
4. it is bad to use certificate has major argument for a pay rise, it show you are not getting things right(Nobody pay you to have first degree). majorly what you can use to ask for pay rise is number of years of experience(i have read books written by MSC Holder as an associate professor in Asia, this cannot happen in our generation in Nigeria with alot of phd).
5. You can start tutorial or home lesson outside the school but inside the school i cannot advice you to do that but you can do if you can handle the some pressure.
6.Do not forget to put your accessories stall back in shape to serve as another means of income when you have money or someone that can sponsor you( dont doubt it, if you have a benevolent people you can talk to that can give some money as dash not loan.)
No vex if i misyarn but that is the truth from my side grin smiley

Good morning dear nairalanders, please I need your advice. I am a 36 years old man. I have a B.eng in Electrical Electronic Engineering. I started an electrical accessories shop after graduating in 2014. Due to the recession in 2016/2017 my business crashed. I started teaching in private secondary schools to bounce back. My pay then was between 15k to 20k. It was at this point that my wife was pregnant and later gave birth to our first child in 2018. There's this school that started newly last year and they were recruiting teachers. I applied because I loved their packaging and it was a place I wanted my two kids to be. So it was a case of using one stone to kill two birds. I was called for an interview and I passed it. When it was time to talk about the pay, they ask me how much I was being paid in my previous school. I sincerely told them. Then they asked me how much I want them to pay me. I simply told them that based on their packaging, I think they already have a standard salary scale for all staff. They insisted i should tell them. So I told them 40k. They asked me to mention the lowest amount that if they pay me less than that, I won't accept the offer. So I said, I won't accept if their offer is less than 25k. So they congratulated me and asked me to join other staff for resumption prayer meetings. The first month I was paid 27k. The second month, they gave me a post of examination officer and increased my pay to 30k till today. Others were paid between 25k to 30k depending on qualifications and duties in school. The highest paid are the administrator, principal and headteacher ( head of primary).
So by January a guy who teaches music and physics came to resign. Resign being that he has been offered 45k to teach music alone in another school for just 2days in a week. Our director persuaded him not to leave and promised to increased his salary. Meanwhile this guy is an ND holder of EEE who was earning 30k along side me. The guy didn't leave and I wondered why? I have a degree in EEE and I teach Maths and technical drawing. I organise free maths class for this students every weekend from primary to secondary. I do this with my team without being paid. Two months ago while I was in school on Saturday for the free maths class, I had all the office keys with me and I stormed into the administrator's staff payments voucher. To my surprise, this said guy started collecting 45k right from January. It was so painful. Nobody knew. I told my colleagues and they were also pained. We had to stop the free class after that day. They management asked me why? didn't give them replies. Please should I confront them to ask them why I, a degree holder, a Mathematics teacher, Examination officer and coordinator of Free mathematics classes, should be paid 30k. While an ND holder should earn 45k. Though there's no money in the school, we've not been paid for two months now. So is this the right time to ask for salary increment? Thanks
