It depends but these days, most mechanics that work on cars have manufacturer training and certifications. I’d estimate those mechanics earn between $30,000 to $70,000 per year which may not go far in the good parts of LA.

Cheapest? As in cost of living? One of the southern states or Midwestern states. West coast and East coast are usually the most expensive.
