In my experience in life, most scammed victims are conned owing to their own greed.

We should ask him how much he paid for the piece of land and compare to how much it is actually worth .

You will see that he thought he was being smart by grossly underpaying.

This reminds of a well to do woman who was stripped naked and beaten by Fabric traders in down turn Lagos .

The woman had been scammed by a tout who flashed her a very expensive fabric material while she was stuck in traffic.

The woman quickly agreed to buy the fabric at a very ridiculous rate and after paying the tout, she found to her dismay that what she bought was mostly rags and paper concealed on the surface by a piece of the expensive lace. She cried out immediately but the scammer was long gone but this attracted the attention of people and some of the fabric dealers. When she recounted her ordeal to them, the fabric dealers asked how much she paid to the tout, as soon as she revealed the ridiculous amount these women pounced on her and began bearing her telling her that it is her type that encourage thieves who come and rob their shops and how did she think she could pay such an amount for an expensive lace without knowing it must have been stolen.

Moral of my rants: greed sets the stage for being scammed.
