My ever first trip to the much-touted Lekki area this year was a huge disappointment. How do you even start to rank a city with no steady light, haphazard good roads, no access to clean water, no central sanitary system? Open defecation, sachet bags, dirt, smelly gutters litter the whole place. There are nice restaurants close to the waterfront but the stench from the water won't let customers enjoy themselves. People who patronize these places are very used to the odour but a visitor may not withstand it. I didn't. Buildings (not that Lagos has many outstanding architectural edifices anyway) alone do not make a modern city. The city has no plan.

Of course, there are some relatively nice estates. But once you exit the gates of the estates, you will be welcomed into the mess called Lagos. It is still in a third world country.
