Nairalanders please let's discuss this. This issue has been disturbing me for a while. Why is our local rice not cheaper than foreign rice?

This local rice is grown on our own lands and not imported, no import duty charges or shipping fees so why is it the same price with foreign rice and worse processing on it. You buy the local rice and it filled with sand and stones, not rightly processed so why is it costly

I don't see any feasible spendings on its production so I don't see any reason for it to be sold at the same price with foreign rice.

Its 900 in the large market and foreign is 1k. In some areas you will get it at the same price with the foreign rice. The price difference is low

The Dollar is playing a significant Factor simply because the so called local Rice you're talking about when processed can now meet Foreign standard and hence, we're exporting it to gain foreign exchange. From time immemorial any Export Standard goods are always expensive;take Hibiscus for an example, it's super expensive that we can't even afford to get for home use anymore cryA particular country is solely dependent on Nigeria Rice at the moment, you will say; when we haven't attain self-sufficiency?
Furthermore, the incessant rainfall in the North at the moment is not helping matter,no sunlight for manual drying of Paddy and the 90% of our Rice seller's can't afford to acquire sophisticated equipment for industrial drying.Talking from the perspective of someone in the race kissMy thoughts though,

trufully,No local rice this year in Nigeria due to poor harvest last season, high demand and bandits. Let me tell you this one secret Even the paddy rice is currently imported from the Neighbouring countries like Benin,Niger and Cameron.Just yesterday I was in popular rice market in Kebbi state but no paddy rice plenty,do you know what I realized?. It's small-small ships that used to bring the rice from Niger republic. The true is that Nigeria is yet to be self sufficient in food production due to obvious reason(corruption). This year alone in Niger state, government has approved the purchased and distribution of 25 tractors but I swear we didn't see even one new tractor with our eyes.
Note:- anything you buy from neighboring countries you have to settle customs even if the goods is not contrabands almost 500k/trailer and this high cost of diesel also contributed.

Nice one but I wish our government can help us to make it cheaper so it can be much more preferred in every household than the foreign rice

No electricity for milling, miller depend on diesel and how much is diesel 850 per liter. India, Thailand have more than abundant electricity hence the high cost.
