These folks no dey like give themselves Brain when it comes to "almighty Amuhrica Military".

It's that easy na en Israel and US dey protest to Russia not to give Iran and Syria S400 defence missile systems. Or why Russia will go to war if US tries to put Patriot missiles in Ukraine and the likes.

Using their analogy, it basically means an F-14 Tomcat, a third gen aircraft is capable of defeating an F-22 Raptor (a 5th gen aircraft), if it is piloted by the best of the best. cheesy
Heck, Nigeria's JF-17s have a fighting chance. grin

Hmm.

Is top gun based on fiction though?

All the fighters exist, the countries exist, top gun school exists.

I assume you're playing the devil's advocate, so i'll bite.

The jetfighters, the countries, and top gun school are real, yes.
However, being based on real life doesn't in any way undermine a fictitious element.
Fiction by definition is something possible but not true.
Where as fantasy = fiction, fiction ≠ fantasy.
Many fictions are based on real life but their plots are fictitious, and this is where it matters.

Can you draw historical parallels to the plot lines of the Top Gun movies?
If you can, I'll humbly submit an apology for my grave error,
But if you can't, then I see no reason why you would even attempt this question.

I concur.

For example, Ted Lasso has real life elements like the character is inspired by a real person, but the story itself is a work of fiction.

I didn't want to go on the numerous discrepancies on the movie and just focus on the few technicalities of it. And dude is thinking I'm badmouthing the movie.

How come they can hit the runway conveniently with Tomahawks and didn't think it wise to use the same missiles for the site without needing to use costly trained pilots and expensive jets. That's basically the job of cruise missiles. To follow terrain, move slower than normal attack missiles, stay low and evade common radars, way cheaper and safer.

How Maverick and Rooster conveniently went back into a site they just bombed and no interception could get into a jet sitting somewhere waiting for them. The jet was even conveniently armed and ready for takeoff with fuel inside. grin

In his bid to quickly discredit "Pro Russian" sentiments dude didn't know this movie is clearly based on past history and real life.
In fact, Top Gun: Maverick is basically an adaptation of what happened over 40yrs ago and still happens or could happen in the future. Just with different actors, jets and countries this time.

Top Gun: Maverick...... 6/10

Tom Cruise kills the role as Maverick, the cast did great, premium VFX and stunts, good story and nice musical score.
Only to be let down by the final 20 minutes.

There is no way a high security uranium enrichment plant hidden in a bunker would be penetrated that easily. With terrain following jets like the French Rafaele, it would be stupid for such facility not to have low tracking radars. Low ceiling/Short range missiles would also be employed. This is where Pantsir S1&2 works best. When you now bring in SAMs like S-400, ALL THE PILOTS ARE DIEING without even using the jets.

See how convenient it was for the tomahawk cruise missiles to land on the airfield without a single interception. oh wow! I'm just gonna believe that. So no radar or satellite took that with the numerous amount of cruise missiles heading their way? cheesy
Imagine covering your nuclear facility with several missiles and planes without protecting your protection (the fighters on ground).

How come the SU-57s despite knowing of the bombing of the base runway still took their sweet time before intercepting the Yankees. Jets that are way faster, way better manoeuvrability it's not even close, yet they allowed the yanks hit their target without even reaching there. Couldn't even catch up to them on their way out. Oh please.

What I also find funny is how an F-14 finds it easy to beat a fifth generation fighter's highly advanced air-to-air missiles with just chaffe. The fvvk!! They want us to think latest top of the range missiles finds it difficult to differentiate between a decoy and the actual target.

Lol, very convenient for an F-18 sneaking up on a fifth generation fighter, an SU-57 at that. There's nowhere in this life that a 4th gen aircraft is sneaking up on 5th gen aircraft without it being spotted. Miles away!!
Shey the numerous radars and sensors surrounding the aircraft from top, bottom, nose to tail na joke to Una.

How in the world would an F-14 Tomcat win a dogfight between Sukhois? Not one but two!! in the same place.
American audience must be very dumb sipping this shït hook line sinker. Anyway it's a movie designed to make American audience feel they are top of world aviation and everyone else is backwards.

Even Chinese pilots that westerners love to talk down their planes won't be caught flat footed with those tactics pulled there.
So na dey tell me say USA brought their top pilots 'top Gun' to this fight and Russia brought rookie pilots to fly their most advanced fighters. Gimme a break. Without protection for these advanced and highly expensive crafts.
There's no nonsense anyone can tell me about "It's NoT tHE plAnE, it'S tHe piLOT", the only jets slightly capable of keeping up with fifth gen aircrafts like the SU-57, F-22 are probably SU-35, F-15 Eagle and Rafaele. Still, THEY'RE AT A DISADVANTAGE!! Even the most decent pilot would never fail in a Fifth generation fighter.

If missions like this were possible, Israel would have bombed all the fvvking uranium enrichment plants Iran has by now. One wonders why Israel is also in the forefront of acquiring 5th gen fighters like F-35 for stealth missions like this.

Overall it's a nice movie but since it's marketed as a military action movie— a movie which Tom Cruise had to learn a million and one stunt moves as a certified fighter pilot— I'm definitely holding it to its standards. Therefore Maverick doesn't cut it. There's nothing anyone can tell me about this travesty.

This is very enjoyable for anyone just watching it for the action and entertainment. But if you really understand how military aviation works this movie is basically a loud mouthed blockbuster nuisance!
This is merely a western propaganda movie.

Of course, it's a propaganda movie.

Until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter cheesy

But every major movie market is guilty of this, so why the rather harsh take on the this one?

Our hero, his employers, and his students, all agreed that it is an "impossible" task.

The thing with fictional tales that involves heroic acts is that they are replete with hyperboles - exagerations. This is the ingredient that makes the mundane look extraordinary. You know this.

We all need a dash of the extraordinary in our lives, hence our love for fictional movies, books, etc, and yes super heroes tongue

Me thinks you protest too much.

Makes me wonder if what irks you is beyond the movie. undecided

one of the ironies in top gun is that in real life, it was probably tom cruise pushing for val kilmer just as iceman was pushing for maverick in the movie. real life role reversal. val kilmer had a bad rep back in the day as a prima donna - and the man spent years out of the spotlight, putting on mad weight. meanwhile tom cruise is now one of the most powerful actors in hollywood. the irony. who would have thought the dark haired midget would wind up being the bigger star?

Ahem, shall we begin.....

This movie is actually based on an Israeli/Iranian operation against an Iraqi nuclear facility in 1981. It is also known as Operation Opera.
F-16s and F-15 Eagles were used to bomb the facility. This was a preemptive strike against Iraq or any other Arab state acquiring nuclear capability in the region.

This event partly has ramifications for Iraq's quest for nuclear power leading to the all popular "There are WMDs in Iraq"!! Thus leading to Big Sam's historical Operation Desert Storm as we know it.

Also as recent as 2020/2021 Israeli forces destroyed parts of Iran's Natanz facility using cruise missiles.

I'll be waiting for that apology post haste. cool

This benevolence of merely looking at it as a fictional tale was not shown to Chinese similar movies in the past.
Battle at Lake Changjing was mostly brought down for simply being a propaganda movie even though the story was as engaging as Top Gun and the visual effects and blockbuster action was up to par.
The technicalities was brought to the fore here.

So this case shouldn't be any different.
Peace out.
