Ckonnet:You are not serious, The country is looking for ways to generate revenue and you are talking nonsense. Lithium business is what is booming here in my local, the Chinese people come to buy it in bulk from locals. We ve it in abundance here and just of recent other minerals are found and extracted from lithium |

Mubby4luv:I don't think you understand the dangers of mining highly poisonous materials in Nigeria. Unlike saner climes, what do you think will happen when those foreign companies try to get rid of the waste from processing such materials? Don't you think the same thing shell is doing will happen here? |

Mubby4luv:Research on lithium waste and how devastating it could be, we are yet clean ordinary oil spill and here you are talking about a very dangerous element that can send everyone packing if mishandled |

Quintopia:I was about to give you a response until I discovered Ruke1989 and Owobokiri already gave you an appropriate one. Your other comments indicate you talk from both sides of your mouth. Your excuse for the government seeking foreign investors to mine Nigerian lithium is that "their hands are full with the other sectors they're running"? Like seriously? Even you know you're being dishonest with yourself. I'm sure if we asked Tesla why it backtracked from mining lithium in Nigeria, it would tell us it left for some different reasons -- the usual ones -- and not because the government wanted it to build a plant here. Doesn't it sound contradictory? The government doesn't want tesla to mine lithium because it wants it to add value but for some reason, wants foreign investors to mine the same lithium. And keep screaming capitalism like a crazy person? How many Nigerian companies mine lithium in Australia? How many mine gold in China? How many mine oil in the US? Yet, you think it's a good idea that we allow them to mine ours? If the Australian government didn't invest in lithium research, would our "intelligent" minister have any reason to go there? How much would it take the Nigerian government to invest in lithium battery research and come up with a framework to mine and develop a battery within the next few years? $1 billion? $2 billion? How much is stolen a year, spent on nonexistent school meals, or on useless MDAs? Just yesterday, I read the news here on NL that the government wanted to cut 400+ MDAs down to just 103 or so. Imagine "Sokoto River Basin Development Agency" as a standalone agency. What does it do? Nothing. But yet, someone thought it was a good idea. But to invest in mining, you started a long lecture about why the government shouldn't invest in mining. Educate yourself, man. You're a shame to the black race. |

Shoodboi:Very well said! That of the duplications in MDAs is just simply stunning! They will just collect royalties from these Oil companies and then create methods of endless employments of partizan hacks and ethnic henchemen into the civil service, just to share government revenues to cronies! They nowadays refer to it as "pensionable jobs". This is why the recurrent expenditures are at all time high across the different levels of government. Few days ago, Buhari in his infinite wisdom lifted the ban on employment in these agencies! This is a government that is basically borrowing money to service loans used for recurrent expenditures!!! Confused lot! |

owobokiri:you missed the whole point and you turned it on its head. Investors don't have to be foreigners. it could be local. But if government takes large portion of a particular investment, it deters investors and competition. We have seen that in everything else government controls. The likes of globacom is a private investor in communication competing with it's foreign counterpart and dictating the market. Expecting government to take over another mining sector instead of issuing licences like what they just proposed for Tesla is stupid. Shell etc could have been the ones to build refinery for the country and export finished petroleum to the rest of the world if proposals like this were in place when those companies took over. But no, Nigeria government wanted to do long throat. Now all the refineries are dead, now they are exporting crude oil at cheap price and importing petroleum at market price as those who don't even have the crude oil. |

ribbit:Do you know about ARAMCO? Google about the company, what it does, who owns it and how it has revolutionalized the Saudi economy with Saudi Oil wealth, then come back to this thread and make better informed posts. Why should shell be building refineries for you!? 60 years since you started oil explorations and you haven't been able to raise an indigenous Oil major to do that? Google PETRONAS too.. |
| Re: Tesla To Mine Nigerian Lithium. Buhari Says They MUST Build Battery Factory 1st. by ribbit: 2:01pm On Sep 16, 2022 |
owobokiri:are you even following the arguement at all or you just wanna sound cool? Lemme repeat myself one last time. When government takes over stuff, that stuff is run to the ground and it deters foreign and local investors because they can't compete with government who will be the one dictating in that market. We saw that in telecoms until government completely removed their hands. Then foreign and local investors are competing favorably. Every other things government runs is now in shambles thanks to corruption and negligence. So don't you think it's insane to ask the same government to start running other sector? Capitalists countries all over the world don't allow government to run anything but regulate the market cos government running things is not always efficient. Imagine government taking over mining of limestone mining In the country and forcing the likes of dangote to compete with it in the cement industry, then we will probably be exporting limestone today and importing cement at market price. The likes of armarco belongs to royal family, it's still technically a private investments that the royal families feed fart on and wouldn't want it run to the ground unlike countries that practice democracy. I hope you got it now. |

ribbit:Is there any place where anyone is telling you that the government should take over everything? How about helping local companies!? What part of it you don't understand? Must it be foreign companies? Or do we agree that you are incapable of creating a Shell or Eni or Chevron!? I gave you examples of similar companies created by nations with oil deposits like Nigeria and you started your drivels. ARAMCO is a Saudi indigenous Oil company that is doing even better than your shell. Ditto PETROGAS from Malaysia. Build up your own businesses like they have done . |

The problem we have in this country is that Nigerians working for foreign companies or Nigerians benefitting immensely from the presence of foreign establishments in this country, will always go out of their ways to argue and vehemently defend the "importance" of these foreign multinationals AGAINST the national interest. The reason why SHELL for instance acts as if the company is above board in Nigeria is because she is practically the owner of Nigerias Oil and gas infastructure! SHELL continuously ignores summons from The National Assembly! If SHELL walks out of Nigeria today, with all the company claims belongs to it, The Federal Government will collapse. It's totally wrong for a country of over 200 million people to be so vulnerable to the antics of one wayward imperial company. |

Acidosis:It would be ironic to see Tesla build a mega factory in Nigeria where every home is either a power station or is condemned to darkness. On the positive side, Tesla could strengthen a hypothetical investment in Nigeria with a robust solar power component to ensure absolute electrical power independence for those factories right from day one. One thing Nigeria does have is intense sunlight. Matter of fact Nigeria sometimes gets almost as hot as Europe was in June 2022. Speaking of climate change, Africa may soon emerge as the seasonal refuge for Europeans and North Americans seeking relief from the brutal summer heat. Before you know it Elan Musk might snag an ocean view villa among the very rich in Nigeria's lagoon land reclamation paradise off the Lagos coast, where he will chill under refreshing African rain showers during the hot summer months in Obodo America and Europe. Let us not forget either that Elon Musk is a "shon of the shoil" South African-born and raised man who is no stranger to the continent's cultures just he is aware of the infrastructural challenges that must be met in Africa. |

owobokiri:Thank you. I know many of them didn't comprehend what I meant by public private companies. Indigenous companies will pop up the moment there is a proper policy direction from the govt. Policies of govt determine the direction of the economy. When buhari imposed ban on rice importation, Julius berger - a construction company quickly ventured into agric business to profit from it. When govt blocks illegal mining even in the north and puts up favourable policies in support of mining, indigenous companies won't mind going into mining because it will become profitable. Also, like the case of MTN you said, the main investors are south Africans so over 90% of its profits gets repatriated to south Africa - Nigeria losses such huge revenue because we don't like long term investment. We want short cut to wealth, govt contract, over night oil block fortunes, kickbacks, etc. This orientation is the reason Nigeria remains under a spell of poverty and unemployment. No one wants to create job - because there are fast, cheap or corrupt ways to get instant money. The govt enables that. These guys are irrational so I assume they are APC goons- that's where irrational people often come from. If the MTN investors are Nigerians, the dividend will be paid to Nigerians and the profit recycled within Nigeria rather than covert to dollars and pay to south Africans. The dollar shortage is worsened by factors like this. If after 60 years, we are still begging foreign investors and we can't take initiative by ourselves, that smacks of laziness. The govt can create businesses and handover to private sector to operate under a build operate and transfer business model. It's a working model. They can also partner the private sector like Obasanjo did for NLNG. In that model, the govt gets the profit accruing from the business while the private sector runs the day to day operation without govt interference in their management, promotion or employment processes. I wonder why these guys can't understand this simple thing. It's a proof of the low quality of graduates and education churned out by the universities |

asanausana91:make una no vex. Read my writing with a settled mind. You will understand. I am not a fan of civil service or govt full ownership of businesses. But I believe in govt initiating partnerships, processes and policies that drive growth. Govt can own companies by owning shares while leaving administration to the private individuals. That will reduce corruption and mediocrity. PPP or BOT makes that possible |

Jakumo:Haha Elon Musk needs to read this... ![]() Well I agree that a robust power plant is achievable. However, the real issues are beyond Nigeria's infrastructural deficit. Tesla's ability to design components in-house has always been a strategic advantage. In fact, that was the reason the company recorded massive sales during the pandemic. While other automakers shut down operations due to supply chain disruptions and border closure, Tesla never stopped. They developed and tweaked everything in-house. So building a battery factory in far away Africa is not something we should expect but, yeah, strategies can be altered. |
