Firstly, I studied in both US and UK and I will tell you again that the US debt is a domestic debt. Now let me educate you like a lay man. Government is the biggest buyer and the biggest spender and the biggest DEBTOR in every economy. Government debts are used to balance cash flow in the economy. Where debt becomes worrisome is if you have a debt in a currency that you fo not control. The Nigerian government, issues billions of debt instrument (treasury bills) twice a week and FGN bonds. The Nigerian govt cannot default in this debt because it is in naira. The government has the capacity to exchange the debts with a new debt at maturity or simply print more notes and yes (government do print does daily). The Us bank is a reserve bank and when the Us govt owes you, they owe you in their currency. Meaning they cannot default. So the Us the world is their domestic market. Saudi Arabia sells their oil in USD. Even the UK charges their visa fee in USD. So the US govt does not worry about their debt like the Nigerian govt whose debts are in USD.

American military is not special in anyway but the nuclear weapons.
Aside the ragtag Nigerian Army, a determined set of Nigerian youth would do better than the American Army in the game of warfare (be it guerilla or conventional).

The domestic portion of the debt is 80% (Pension plans, Retirement accounts) California pension plan alone accounts for 45% of the debt. The obvious reason is that California is the 6th largest economy in the world. Yeap 6th largest in the world.
The external portion is 20%. The largest external bondholder is Japan followed by China

If Treasury ever decided to print notes to cover the debt nothing any other countries can do. The only downside to this idea will be inflation and stagnation in the economy. US does not borrow from China. China buys treasury bonds to hedge against oil price increases since oil is priced in dollars. Ditto for all institutions buying bonds, all hedging against inflations
