In 1999, Igbos Were The Only Ones That Opposed Yorubas When Other Nigerians Ceded Power To Us- Falae
News Hub CreatorSep 27, 2022 3:16 PM
Former Minister of Finance, Chief Olu Falae, has said that the Igbos should be given a chance to produce the next President of the country in the interest of fairness and equity. He said that although the Igbos were the only ones that opposed the Yorubas when other regions in Nigeria agreed that the Yorubas should produce the President in 1999, he still believes that the right thing to do now is to cede power to the South-East because they are the only ones that have not tasted power.

Falae said that when he contested for the presidency, he was opposed by Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife whom he defeated to emerge as the candidate of his party. He said that the same thing happened in the People's Democratic Party when Olusegun Obasanjo was opposed by Dr Alex Ekweme.

In the report which was made by Vanguard, he said - "... In 1999 when the rest of Nigerians conceded the presidency to Yoruba because of MKO Abiola's issue, it was only the Igbos who did not. I had to defeat Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife in the Alliance for Democracy to become the candidate for the AD/APP. Olusegun Obasanjo had to defeat Dr Alex Ekwueme in the PDP to become a candidate. The Igbos were the only ones that opposed both of us in our respective parties, they did not concede to us along with other Nigerians."

Speaking further, Chief Falae added that that shouldn't be an issue, and that to be fair, other regions have produced the President, and that equity requires that the Igbos should also be allowed to produce a President too.

He added that as a member of the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, the group has not yet taken a decision on which presidential candidate to support in the forthcoming election.

What do you have to say about this statement from Chief Falae? Feel free to share your thoughts with us.

You have right to support any candidate of your choice under our constitution but as for me and my family, Tinubu is the man because of his past track records. We don't want to perform experiment with president this time.

Their hatred for the Yorubas is inborn. Thesame scenerio repeated itself this year, when APC eventually decided to cede the presidency to the south during the primaries and it was obvious BAT or PYO will clinch the ticket, we saw the children of hate shouting the north should rather continue than allowing a yoruba man.

I only pity those Yoruba todlers that follow them to shout zombidient here and there.

Because they don't have option. The two candidates are from Yoruba so they choose the one Yoruba reject.

I repeat this is not the whole truth

Igbos did not oppose OBJ/Yoruba

The fact is that .. During the Pdp convention in 1998, Ekwueme was the outstanding Candidate to win, Infact he was projected to win

But there is what is called Horse trading and Negotiations among the party members and candidates.. there was the Clamour for Power to shift to the South West and specifically Yorubas due to what happened in 1993..

And the most prominent high chieftains of the Pdp, A.k.a the former Generals favoured one of the own in the person of Obasanjo. That was why Obasanjo was chosen.. Heck Obasanjo was even in prison not long ago.

U can tell me how Obasanjo that was in prison few months ago can beat the cerebral Ekwueme In the Pdp primaries..

So it was decided that Its Obj.. but that doesn't mean that Ekwueme wont still contest because the obj choise was not a Consensus and not Official

So as they were going into the primary on that day, people already know that Obasanjo will win

An example of this was APC in 2014.. in ther first primary after formation, Many aspirants bought forms to compete for the presidency but we all know that Buhari will win... we all know that Tinubu had made a pact with Buhari personally, so even tho Atiku, Kwankwaso et all contested, we all know who is going to win..

That is how it is in Ekwuemes own.. Ekwueme didn't take his loss in bad faith because he supported justice in power going to the West..

To show that Igbos supported Obj fully, they gave Obasanjo their block votes showing that they supported power to the South West

The same old boring song. We all had no choice. It was the era of massive rigging. PDP got Nigeria by the Ballz then..

Plus, didn't obj pay you back handsomely by spanking Ezekwe-silly in the ass severally? The man's regime actually favoured you bitter lots than even the Yorubas.

coolvLike all Yoruba, can falae, said this? Somebody Ogbonnaya Onu stepped down for after winning in App, Na wa ooo, I don't think , falae said this , I know those who are good in lying and propaganda not knowing the history never dies, immediately I saw the name of the op I know, this is a lie from the pit hell. Anti Igbo propaganda that is wrongly coned without bases, Igbo's voted Obj massively against Igbo candidate, it was because or Ekwueme in PDP that made Igbo's supported PDP and voted 98% for yoruba obj, because wanted a peaceful country where everyone will live in peace, this is immediately after the military, they voted a Fulani man Year Adua and an ijaw man, Jonathan and since then been supporting PDP, and the PDP underated Igbos when it I'd the turn of Igbos, some people from the pit of hell are saying no, majority of Igbos never wanted Biafra but the hatred of some of people and making Igbo to move for it , buhari who Igbos saw as disaster miles away were imposed on Nigerians came to cause more crisis which have been controlled, following the rampaged caused by the military, now Igbos now say this is our turn, tribal jingoist will see the effects in 2023, so the op is a peddler of lies, tribal jingoist, hatred propaganda, the mod should take note, no serious person regards the op on nairaland

This is all I see

I really don't know how true this opposition was but the mindset and manipulation of the leader should be separated from that of the people

Nigerians have seen that Nigeria leaders are not the true representatives of the people but themselves, this we have seen in the sharing of the palliatives, settling of whistle blowers and many other major decision concerning the masses!

Hence their determination to change the narrative come this election!

If their mandate is stolen, no one will blame Nigerians but the few elites and leaders, history is taking note.

This is pure fallacy. Ogbonnaya Onu categorically stated during the last APC convention that he stepped down for Olu Falae in 1999, and Ekwueme stepped down for Obj in PDP, this a blatant lie from the pit of hell.

I'm sure Falae never said that cos it would amount to madness for him to say that.
And for your info,Obj already won PDP ticket,Falae won AD ticket,Ogbonnaya Onu won APP ticket.
Ogbonnaya Onu had to relinquish his own ticket so APP could go into an alliance with AD.
That is how Falae became the flag bearer of both AD and APP.
But una be afonja naa,una dey good at revision of history

So igbos should be allowed to rule because of fairness, when will urhobo, Hausa, kanuri, bini, Esan and the rest be allowed to rule because of fairness?

A statesman should always act with integrity and forthright. Ogbonnaya Onu defeated Olu Falae at the primaries but later surrendered his ticket to him for the unity of the country.

Falae is just deliberately mischievous. At the APC presidential primaries election convention, Ogbonnaya Onu reinstated how he won the AD primaries and later surrendered it to falae that he had expected every other region to reciprocate that also for the unity of Nigeria.
