Viktoria Theresie Izabelle Ljungman, 23, attended Virginia's Hampton University on a tennis scholarship, eventually becoming a flight instructor On Thursday, around 3 p.m., she and Oluwagbohunmi Ayomide Oyebode, 18, got into a plane for a lesson During instruction, Oyebode pointed the nose of the plane too high, causing the plane to stall and crash into a ditch Ljungman, a licensed commercial pilot who lived in , Va., after graduation, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Oyebode, a Maryland native, and another 18-year-old male were the only other people on the plane.

They've been taken to a local hospital with what are described as life-threatening injuries.

Tragedy struck when Oyebode pointed the nose up at too steep an angle during take-off. That made the aircraft stall at around 100 feet and led the plane to crash into a ditch, according to WMAR.

Ljungman, a licensed commercial pilot who lived in Williamsburg, Va., after graduation, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Oyebode, a Maryland native, and another 18-year-old male were the only other people on the plane. They've been taken to a local hospital with what's described as life-threatening injuries.

All trainer aircraft are equipped with dual controls in which the two front seat occupants each have a flight yoke and rudder pedals they can operate alternatively to control the plane's attitude.

The only way this trainee pilot could have pulled too far back on the flight yoke and lifted the aircraft nose too high would be if the young man panicked and OVERPOWERED the corrective nose-down, yoke-forward control inputs that his female instructor was struggling to apply in order to avoid a stall. If two pilots in the same cockpit are applying OPPOSITE pressure on the flight controls, the STRONGER pilot will likely overcome the weaker pilot and gain full control of the plane, for better or worse.

In this case, the male trainee was stronger than his instructor and was thus able to hold the nose too high for long enough to stall the plane beyond any hope of recovery, making a crash a tragic certainty.

The trainee pilot pulled back too violently on the yoke causing the plane to pitch upwards, depart from control and thus drop like a rock in an aerodynamic stall. That sequence of events was described in the original news story. Sorry if you are upset at yourself for missing that statement.
