The Federal Government on Friday
apologized to Nigerian students and
parents over the prolonged strike
embarked upon by the Academic Staff
Union of Univetsities, ASUU

The leadership of the public University
teachers early hours of Friday
conditionally suspended the eight
month strike it embarked upon on
February 14 as a result of the
government’s failure to attend to some
of their concerns.

The federal government through the
Ministry of Labour and Employment
expressed gratitude to all Nigerians
who participated in various ways in
the negotiations leading to the calling
off of the strike.

A statement by the Deputy Director
Press in the Ministry, Olajide
Oshundun, assured Nigerians that with
the steps the federal government is
taking, Nigerian students will be saved
the unpalatable experience of
intermittent, prolonged industrial
actions in future.

According to the statement, “In a
special way, the Minister of Labour
and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige
expresses gratitude to the Honourable
Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and
the leadership of the House of the
House of Representatives.

“We particularly recognize the
patriotic efforts of the Sultan of
Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar III, the
former President of the Christian
Association of Nigeria, Rev. Supo
Ayokunle, all members of Nigeria
Inter Religious Council (NIREC) and
the Catholic Bishops Conference of
Nigeria whose wisdom and
intervention raised a ray of hope while
the strike was at infancy but for
ASUU’s intransigence to negotiation.

“We were forced to migrate the matter
to the National Industrial Court of
Nigeria (NICN) created by the 1999
Constitution as amended, for the
settlement of industrial disputes
because every channel of negotiation
including the tripartite plus, in which
eminent Nigerians participated in
failed. We were left with no other
option than to trigger Section 17 of the
Trade Disputes Act .CAP T8, Laws of
the Federation of Nigeria 2004 on
dispute resolution mechanism in
seeking the intervention of the
National Industrial Court .

Apologies is not enough. There should be some sort of compensation. Maybe allowing them not to pay a semester school fees would suffice.

Apologies ?
What effect has it 9n undergraduates that died due to the senseless unnecessarily prolonged strike ?
Like Unilorin students that died in a fuel laden bus while going home due to strike
Or the Ogbomosho receptionist lady that was kidnapped and killed with her boss?
That's among several others.
Failed leadership with bad direction.

Chaiii..
These fools plan to use the strike for campaign!??

Nigerians forget very fast..... Some stupid parents and their children will still vote for the broom party, forgetting how miserable they made them in the last 8 months.

Nigerians deserve what they get.... You can't pray to be like Canada and reason like a primitive pygmy in the jungles of Congo.

At the end of the day, the main issue is

Is the federal government willing to increase fees for university students.?

Like I previously said their kids don't school in Nigeria! People said Ngiges kid schooled in Nigeria and I was like is she still schooling or she's graduated? Nigerian politicians don't care about your wellbeing. All they want is your money, more of it infact everything that should make you happy is illegal in nigeria. See kogi. The only and shortest access road to abj from the east, Edo has been flooded and nothing will still be done about it and that road has been under construction fr so many years.. you better wake up and vote someone credible for people that don't have the means to leave naija

Apology accepted.

Let's be frank to ourselves. Federal Government alone cannot fund tertiary education.

In 2019 Budget, Federal Govt budgeted over N17B to ABU Zaria and ABU Zaria generated less than 4 billion naira in the same year.

Must Federal Universities in Nigeria Charges between N25,000 - N40,000 per year. Most primary schools pay higher than that.

If Nigeria want to compete globally, then she must do what others are doing.

Okay.

So Ngige is not accepting FG's fault in breaching an agreement and heaping the blame on ASUU not accepting to back down?

On the issue of thanking religious leaders, I find it inappropriate to involve religious leaders to wage into a matter of secular nature.

So if I have a problem with my line manager, we will go and call a religious leader to solve our problem.

Re: FG Apologizes To Students, Parents Over Prolonged ASUU Strike by othermen: 7:11am On Oct 15, 2022
The things that matter,

that the strike was called off and not merely suspended.

that the dispute was resolved.

the source of the dispute is reneging on earlier agreements, the solution was immediate implementation and not another set of promises that the next government has a precedent to desire a renegotiation.

It’s as though the problem is suspended to the future however you think it.

FG has not withdrawn its suit in court, ASUU has not withdrawn their demands either.

Has students gained a better motivated workforce and would they return to well equipped laboratories or good infrastructured universities? No!! Not yet!!! The best of their lecturers are only waiting for the arrears to be paid before they resign and take on better opportunities abroad. The best of their lecturers would not abandon the means or businesses that have sustained them through the strike. The full attention of their lecturers is probably forever lost.

And shouldn’t it with their lived experiences of government utter disregard and contempt for the academia. Who would remain at the discretion of any employer willing to sentence the employee to an 8month without a means for their living or those of their dependents? Just because the employer is admonished on its failure to implement agreements he is a party to.

Perhaps then, the students would return to living on promises waiting for the implementation of the next budget, where such fund will be channeled to building additional universities in some senators village and not put to it’s right purposes.

Has ASUU members done a bit for themselves here? Yh. Not accomplished their desires, forced to compromise their approach, but not their convictions.

In the end, the suspended strike will resume. The next government will follow through and remove the educational subsidy that ASUU defends as the right of every Nigerian.

Then, you can pray you don’t become a drop out or pray you don’t have families in Nigeria that won’t be able to afford education by then or pray you have the university, when the students revolts at government withdrawal of the subsidy. Probably shutting down the universities themselves.

During, the strike, one of the insight I got was, why can’t NANS mobilize and shut down private universities; so that everyone can feel some loss as result of the strike. The elite parents in such private universities would desire to see the dispute resolved sooner and would know, that private universities are not absorbed from crisis ongoing in public universities.

It’s all suspended now. ASUU has further compromised its position, accepted an offer definitely beyond its desire, just for the save of face and the avoidance of utter chaos in the educational sector; that a Buhari don’t appear bothered about.

Perhaps, as the government always do, a reneging occurs on this new agreement, and we are back to our annual strike actions.

Lol, Apology recieved with shaky hands

Do they have a choice to reject the apology? No.

What are the basics put in place for students to regain the Lost 8 months? None, this is Nigeria, we move!

Would ASUU go on strike again? Yes, certainly.

What are the basics put in place to prevent a tomorrow strike? None for Now.

Is FG happy about this? Of course.

Are the students happy about this? They all lazy youths, if you make them happy they would lose focus smiley

Timekeeper452:
This useless man was the reason this strike lasted this long.

Well, the man could have ended the strike by increasing fees to a million naira minnium

Which you would not have liked, but would have helped to solve the funding issue...which is the main reason why ASUU goes on strike.
