A simple Question: If you were a Governor or a high-up public office holder, would you not send your children abroad to study? Would your wife agree that your children should go to a NIGERIAN university, public or private?

Hypothetic assertion cos it cant work in Nigeria,the government hasn't done a lot in convincing people to paying taxes. We hear millions been looted and no prosecution yet you expect people to pay tax so the looters can still loot them.

The government has to do first before people can pay. A jobless individual wont pay no tax but if a government provides employment opportunities then why would it be difficult for the citizenry to pay taxes?

Most foreign students cannot afford university education...so they pay for it via loans . As seen in the US, and the UK.

2.Alternatively, government taxes everyone in this country...not just the 30% who pay...to guarantee free education....as seen in Denmark and Germany...which have free education from tax to gdp ratios of 45-50% (Nigeria is at 8.1%).

3.Or we keep pretending that education is cheap...while the universities continue to depreciate drastically.


The old model where we paid for education from the revenue we got from whatever we sold worked in the 1960's and early 1970's when universities had less than 3000 students. Not anymore.

Only a few percentage of Nigerians work. The government tax on the few percentage is minimal to fund good education facilities. The private universities the politicians establish after stealing public funds mostly should have been a breaker for Nigeria, but the fees are not affordable for a larger percentage of Nigerians.

Then you are not ready for quality university education in Nigeria yet.

Accept your bad universities. Universities cost money. Lots of it. They need the money to conduct high level research, pay staff high salaries, and in some instances house students and staff, and expand if need be.

Yet, you guys will complain about how bad our universities are, and compare them to foreign universities but when we tell you of the cost implication of those foreign universities, you will tell me we are poor.

Well, we are poor. And the bad universities we have is what we can afford.

I am an economist so we are practically on the same page. However, I need to make you understand that things that works in those sane climes wont work here. The amount of corruptions in Nigeria wont encourage anyone to pay tax. If a road is constructed and people are asked to pay toll fee wont they pay? But you cant expect people to pay toll fee on a bad road so in this context now a road was constructed. That means the government has to do more with the ”little” oil revenue so as to convince people of their intentions.

I can talk about Umahi. He doesn't joke with education, the man is a gem. He sponsors a lot of children in both federal and state schools. And it's not based on political affiliation. I know this because I have a very brilliant cousin who's been blessed by him.
You might hate him for being in APC but the man is a blessing to his people.

Stop making excuses for Nigerian politicians. Peter Obi is currently the best among the set of candidates contesting in this election, but it doesn't make him a saint. He is also guilty of alot of what the other politicians do. I am only rooting for him to win because he is relatively better than the other two hardened criminals, but that does not mean I won't call out his own flaws to do better. This was how Buhari was projected as a Saint, even when we knew fully well his kids were in the UK as at then. The same excuse by supporters was "the children are not depending on Nigerian money". This absolute blind loyalty thing is what is killing Nigeria. These people are not saints, let them know, so that they do better. Instead of making excuses for them
