Nigeria politicians sending their kid's to Universities abroad, because they know the ones they built in Nigeria here is trash.

Basic reason why Nigerian governors send their kids abroad is because school fees in most Nigerian universities are too low.

Our universities are very cheap. As a result, they have limited money to keep themselves functioning well. And as a result, facilities and standards have depreciated.

So the rich, and the upper middle class, and even some of the poor...send their kids abroad. Where they pay high fees in return for good quality education.

Yes, my papa went to school 'for free' Back when they went to university (Obi went to uni, Atiku went to a polytechnic, Tinubu went abroad)....there were fewer students in our universites...and as such the money was enough to cater for all of them. From the 1980's, the number of students exploded...and we ended up with the mess we have now.

If the level of corruption at all level were to reduce to the barest minimum in this nigeria, we'll have a decent public education.

It won't be as qualitative as abroad but it will be sufficient and our graduates would be competent enough like other developing nations in our league.

It will take a very long time to reverse the rot and damage in every sector in nigeria.

Problem is, Nigerian universites are underfunded, and have been for decades.

Since no one wants to support fee increases to deal with the underfunding...the rich take their kids out of the country....

1.Yes, which is where taking loans comes in.

Most foreign students cannot afford university education...so they pay for it via loans . As seen in the US, and the UK.

2.Alternatively, government taxes everyone in this country...not just the 30% who pay...to guarantee free education....as seen in Denmark and Germany...which have free education from tax to gdp ratios of 45-50% (Nigeria is at 8.1%).

3.Or we keep pretending that education is cheap...while the universities continue to depreciate drastically.


The old model where we paid for education from the revenue we got from whatever we sold worked in the 1960's and early 1970's when universities had less than 3000 students. Not anymore.

P.S : It's a mess really. I wish it was otherwise.

Everything would be achieveable if all parties becomes responsible. If the government provides basic infrastructures and conducive environment for investors then why wont they have the guts to increase taxation.
