Fact is 70% of nigerians don't have a will .. not knowing that death can come at anytime.

Now I have a person in Ibadan who is yoruba. Lets call him Mr A. Before his father died , he and the wife (Mr A mother ) was always having issues. Several times crying on phone that she's tired of the marriage. Mr A is grown up at least.. he's about 28 with younger siblings. Now that his father is dead, his mother took old of all his asset both landed and finances. She sat on them like a hen sitting over it's eggs. Out of millions of naira in her possesion, she only gave 70k to the first child and 15k each to the second and third. Part of the rest she is using to build a self con apartment in her name and also using part to complete the students hostel she has spent more than 7 years building (she has spent more than 7 years building that hostel. Now that all money is in her possession she wants to use it to complete the building).

She plans selling the husbands car.. even the husbands house she was against burying him in the compound. Her plan was to sell the house too...

The first child just dey look and laugh. Women these days are just greedy and self centered. How is property distributed in your own culture? Na wife of the deceased dey claim everything?

Tell that guy to stand his ground. You were constantly quarreling your husband while he was alive now that he's dead you dey claim property wtf who does that? Women today have nothing to lose o.. most mothers of today are just greedy and self-centered. They put themselves first before their kids and its a win win for them. She go carry money remarry or travel out its a win win for her. Don't dull yourself.. your future is at stake.

"If a child that is not yet mature tries to know what killed his father, whatever killed his father might kill him too."
Igbo proverb.

And you wonder why he who is supposed to stand up is laughing and overlooking instead.

If they were still married as at the time of his death then it's the wife that automatically inherits the man's property except he left contrary instructions in his will...this is my opinion

Not all cultures o.. most cultures married or divorce, the first son takes over. Woman wey go inherit property still remarry on top? Moreover she's not the late husbands blood. The children is. In the OPs narrative they were constantly quarrelling and when he died she's now claiming his properties here and there. In ibo culture nobody go gree that kind wayo.

The law of the country is superior to the culture.

According to the law, the surviving spouse is entitled to 1/3 of the properties while the children share the remaining equally.

Ok.
In my religion...
Woman will take 1/8 of the total assets.
While male child will take double of what female child will take.
Mr. A left 8m:
His wife will be given 1m.
His two male children's will share 3.5m each.
If male and female...
Male 4.333m female 2.333m
(Male will take double of what female will take)
If his parent are alive they will also get their share as well.
The above sharing formula most be adhere to under Sharia court supervision of an Imam

among all tribes in delta central and south, na the wife and children get all, except they are separated or divorced. Of divorced, the property belongs to all children, whether male or female, not only first child or man

Depends ooo. I've seen a case where after the hubby died, the man's family packed everything away from the wife and children claiming the hubby was impotent.

The oney thing they left was the family house and that was because they buried the hubby there.

To cut the story short:
All the properties are automatically belongs to male children. Mother and daughter are just Tennant

The law of Nigeria is above the culture.
The wife gets two thirds. The remaining is shared equally between all children.
