I have gained some insights into different societies and cultures, by traveling far and wide. Not as a weekend tourist, but spending extended time in those places, and living an everyday life. Some of that information/experience might be useful to someone here.

The main point of this AMAA is mostly to answer questions of curiosity. Just random things you wonder about more obscure and less popular places (which I prefer to visit). I'm calling it "Ask Me Almost Anything," because I will not be answering certain questions.

Some questions I can't answer:

1. Questions about visa processes: I simply don't know, as I travel visa-free on a US passport, in almost all cases.

2. Questions about "hustling" as a documented or undocumented resident.

I have a web-based business in the US. So I work remotely, wherever I am.


A few things to note:

1. When I say "lived in a country," I don't mean permanently. I use that for countries I spend at least 1 month. I typically spend anywhere from 1- 3 months per country. In a few cases, I've stayed as long as 6, 10 and 12 months in some countries.

2. I travel on a US passport. I keep renewing my Naija passport each time it expires, but I never actually use it. Latest one I got in New York expired some months ago. I only used it once, in visiting Naija.

3. I am less interested in visiting "first world countries," as I find them boring. So most of my travels are to developing countries, but mostly those I still have access to solid accommodation and amenities. I have a business to run, so I can't be without reliable internet.

I find these countries more diverse in culture and lifestyle. First world countries are too structured and predictable.

4. I don't stay in hotels. I rent full Airbnb apartments, as I typically stay in a place for a few months and prefer to feel at home. I only stay in a hotel, if I need to, for 1-2 days while in transit, or something.

5. I've been learning Spanish for a long time, and speak decent enough conversational Spanish, and basic Portuguese.

This thread is purely travel-related, not professional endeavors. However, the bold part is a problematic approach that causes many people to self-sabotage. Don't look for shortcuts and don't focus on quick gains. Focus on long-term skills and long-term outcomes.

I would recommend you take advantage of the numerous free resources online. If you want to go into the often lucrative field of programming, you can start with freecodecamp.org. It's free, and you'll be issued certificates. You can learn enough to land a Junior Developer job at a small startup.

If you want to go into Data Analysis, you can start with Google's official Data Analytics Certification on Coursera.org
It can take you several months to complete, if you're not very focused. If you go all in, you can do it in 2 months. Coursera is $39.99/month. So $80 for 2 months. You'll be issued a Data Analyst certificate. If you actually learn the skill, and not just breeze through to pass (like many students do), you can apply to Junior Data Analyst job positions.

These things pay a decent enough wage to start out in Tech. There is also cybersecurity and other areas to look into. All the best.

Guy that's not true. Library is unofficially a protectorate of USA. They aided USA during world war II and USA deployed troops to the country led by a general to provide logistics support during Ebola saga. Their relationship with America is closer than other African countries. And just so you know, Liberia as a country was formed by black Americans that migrated back to Africa in 19th century.

I really love your assertion. However I would opined that it's not as easy as you think. Like I myself, I really have the passion and enthusiasm to venture in to the tech realm. It is my believe that digital skills is the new vogue.

Unfortunately, you gat to start somewhere, like in my case getting a Laptop. Heck I don't even have the means of getting one talk more of kick-starting this journey.

All in all, I believe when there is will there is hope. Later or sooner I would get there someday.

Always ask yourself what you can do today to actually move you one step in that direction.

People often limit themselves with stuff like "I don't have money," "I don't have time" etc. The reality is they just haven't prioritized those things. Like someone saying they don't have money to launch a N200k business idea they had, but somehow they have an N800k phone, and are unemployed. They just haven't prioritized their funds effectively.

Or someone saying they don't have the time to study a professional course online, to acquire a new marketable skill. Yet, somehow, they've seen every episode of every TV show you can think of. They just haven't prioritized their time effectively.

I'm sure you don't personally fall into these categories, but it's an example of how people sabotage their own progress toward their dreams.

No one needs to save up a million dollars to start traveling the world. Hell, a lot of Americans start traveling the world with like $200 in their bank account. All you need is a steady remote income that will keep covering all your expenses, as you travel. And of course, emergency funds, in case you need to evacuate a place suddenly and return home.

Most of the gun violence happens between gangs and rival gangs. The authorities sometimes try to combat this violence, but it happens at a rate that's a bit more than the resources available to investigate and try each case. So many of these shootings and murders, particularly in Chicago will never be solved.

Also, the black community doesn't really help, as they have a street code of "no snitching!" So even if the community knows who shot someone, most keep their mouths shut. If you snitch, you or your family will be next to get shot. It's a sad state of affairs. So if you ever plan to move to the US, do whatever you can to avoid bad "hoods." If you can't afford good neighborhoods, you're better off living in a small town somewhere in the Mid-West, and commuting to a nearby city for work.

There's also the issue of mass shootings in schools and public places, which is a different issue on its own.

Africa:
South Africa. I haven't been to a lot of countries in Africa, but South Africa is by far the most developed of the few I've been.


Europe:
Portugal. This isn't the "best" country in Europe, for several reasons, like economy and such, but I think I liked it best.

North America:
The U.S, by far.

It is the same way anyone reading this will grant free access of his/her apartment to Dangote instead of me. The belief is that since Dangote is wealthy, he won't constitute a nuisance either as a poor person or a criminal. It does not matter whether I won the Nobel prize, I won't be offered the same privilege as Dangote simply because I don't come from a family as notable as his. Humans are naturally discriminatory.

Visa free privileges are not hinged on racism like some woke people opine, but on wealth. Black people will be respected globally if the vast majority of black-dominated countries become rich. As it is, the wealthiest set of black people are African Americans, but the vast majority of black people are sub-Saharan Africans who happen to be the poorest people globally. Thus, the average black person outside Africa and North America/UK/France is seen as a poor person.

This is the problem when a country's immigration laws are lax towards poor countries - all sorts of people get unfettered access. Before 2006/7, Nigeria had visa-free access to Singapore. But after a spate of drug smuggling, the Singaporean gov't cancelled it and imposed strict visa application processes. The result? The kind of Nigerians you would find in Singapore are better behaved, richer, educated and disciplined than those in other parts of South East Asia. The stricter the visa application process of a country is, the more disciplined the Nigerians there are. In the next few years, Nigerians in the UAE will become better behaved citizens than five years ago. Another contrast to Malayasia is Canada. Tighten the borders to get better behaved Nigerians. Loosen it and you would have them create cult gangs.
