smart8956:Justwise, Cc: ramalot If you're the one that moved this thread to front page, please I beg you, don't do it for subsequent educative threads again. Immediately I saw it had reached 8 pages, I just knew front page happened and would contain all manner of unpleasant, ignorant and annoying posts. Can you just imagine this comment? If only his likes know the wealth they can earn digitally. Please leave such threads in their home section for them to be discovered by those who need them. Ramalot, please don't be surprised at the sudden ignorant comments you nuts have read. It's as a result of your thread being moved to the front page for all and sundry to see. Once a lovely thread like yours hits front page, expect all manner of comments. |

Itzteewhy:Nothing in life worth having or doing is easy. Yes, you have to start somewhere. Even if that means hunting down the last existing cybercafe in your city, to get it done. Even if it means searching for a computer rental program in your city. Google "laptop rentals in [enter your city]." Yes, laptop rentals exist in Nigeria. I know, because someone I offered a lucrative job once gave me an excuse of not having a laptop, and that there was nowhere to rent one. One quick google search later, and I sent him to a rental location in Abuja. Where there's a will, there's a way. At the end of the day, it's all in your hands. A cybercafe might be your most affordable option. Also see if there's a library in your city that offers free internet access. As you said, you gotta start somewhere. So do exactly that. Personal anecdote: The first step that directly resulted in me becoming a US citizen started in a cybercafe, in a dusty Nigerian town, as a teenager. |

ferhyntorlah:Haha, I know how that goes. I was hoping it won't get moved to the home page, just to keep the thread on topic, but it's all good. It's not as bad as some threads get. It's still relatively on topic and salvageable. And for the passport pic, it had zero personally identifiable information. Just booklet fronts that could be anybody's. |

| Re: I Have Lived in (or Visited) over 30 Countries. Ask Me Almost Anything (+ Pics) by ramalot(op): 4:47pm On Dec 25, 2022 |
dyera:That's a more complex question than it might seem, as the US is a very large country. The easier way to approach it is at a city and neighborhood level. Whatever state you consider, you have to look into the crime rates of each city. Even at that, some neighborhoods in most cities are either good, ok or bad. NYC has its safe, ok and terrible areas. So does Miami, Atlanta etc. Even Chicago has good and safe neighborhoods, as most of the violent crime is concentrated in the South Side of Chicago. If you're a multi-millionaire though, feel free to buy property in Hollywood Hills and move in next door to the stars ![]() |

ramalot:Good evening sir, why did you say stuff like graphic design might not cut it. I'm not a graphic designer, but design in any form is always interesting to me. I'm studying a design related course and doing an online Ux course also. What would you say about ui/ux in the tech world, is it enough to "cut it" like you said. |

G00DHardDick:Ramalot was on point with the violence in urban areas like in Chicago ... Black on Black shootings mainly gang related. On the other hand.... the White neighborhoods face mass shootings ... if you check the news... mass shootings are almost never in urban areas. I work in a notorious hood in NYC ... in the midst of various gangs into different stuffs ... drugs... gun runnings..... pills.... prostitution etc... but if you are a stranger to the community you will not know all of this is going on. Unlike in Chicago or Detroit.... these operate like businessmen... like the Mafia ... each knows his boundaries and the street code. No doubt... from time to time... there would be a shooting or two .... but not the gang banging as in other States. People go about their business as per normal and you may not believe .... but being robbed or shot is not something that people here worry about. To paint a better picture.... people here usually walk around with their phones in the back pocket ... that's normal. The thief is the one who has to worry because the gangs will come down heavy on anyone causing the Police to come to the area and disturb their operation. On NYC ..... rent is expensive ... extremely difficult to get a gun license ... mandatory sentence if found with a gun without permit to have in the State.... all jobs and everything can be found here... fast paced ... multi ethnic ... verrrry competitive and a whole heap of opportunities ... a magnet to immigrants.... and pretty much outstanding like Lagos is to the rest of Nigeria. I'm out on this ... back to the thread. |

ferhyntorlah:The thread is invaluable, so it should be on the Front Page. It is Nairaland, a discussion forum. Yes, once a thread hits the FP, readers should expect all sorts of comments, however, that should not be a reason it should not hit FP. The best option which was done is to allow the thread to run up to 3-5 pages before taking it to the FP. That way, the earliest comments are related to the thread. Another option is to overlook unsavoury comments. Everyone cannot react in the same way and you cannot please everyone |
