On video visiting Oba Ewuare II in Benin, Oba Akiolu actually mentioned Ado being from Benin. Late Oba Oyekan said same.

A Lagos prince told me something similar decades back. Seems to corroborate oral and written history. Though I have not heard the Awori part from Oba Akiolu say it.

Fact we know what Oba Akiolu believes. It doesn't sit well with the Yoruba narrative and they do not hide their hate.

I will seek to know the Awori part.
Koro, Odibo and Eletu have long been established as following Ado from Benin.

Kosoko was the last true vassal Eleko of Oba of Benin

Idejo own the land, right?

Ok wherever you see Oba of Lagos written go and add .. .. Island. grin cheesy

Oba Akiolu is Oba of Lagos. Way above the other chiefs recently elevated.

Chai, because his Benin origin is fairly recent and officially well documented, the efforts are now to diminish his status. Funny set of people.

Well, I believe you're well learned.

When they say Oba of Lagos. Which area are they talking about??

BTW, I'm not diminishing his status
Because he's a first class Oba and he's probably the head of those Oba in Lag.

The kind of inferences we draw from history are not just absurd, but potentially dangerous.

Saying that Lagos belongs to Benin because the Lagos ruling family has Edo descent is just as absurd as saying that Spain belongs to France because the dynasty ruling in Spain today is of French descent.

You loan a king to another country and all of a sudden the country belongs to you? grin

Even though the ruling family has long since shed all traces of foreignness and has become thoroughly native. undecided

Benin flown over ijebu to lagos Abi?? bloody liars .. presense of benin in Small area of lagos island is through the portugese explorers that brought some edo chiefs and prince aboard their merchant ship to their lagos trade post ,portuguese had been trading with the aworis and the ijebus before the benin ever set foot in lagos, Idejos own the land, benin is ile-ife colony .Aworis are from ile-ife so making a prince of ife a king in small area of lagos island means nothing which was a wise decision then because of strong trade relationship between benin kingdom and the portuguise which will further enhance trade in lagos island..Idejos are still the owner of the land and kingmaker

Oba Eleko of Isale Eko is between the BINI and the IJESHA! But firstly, we must ask who own Lagos or probably who owns the land of Lagos. We must also differentiate between Eko, Isale Eko, Lagos Island, Lagos and Lagos State.

Sometimes in the early-mid 1400s, an Ile-Ife Prince Olofin Ogunfunminire and his family left the Ife palace, with an instruction of Ifa (Deity Oracle) to place a place a "Plate of Sacrifice" (Awo Ipese Ebo) on the water and sail behind it to where it goes, and wherever it sinks, they should make their settlement and expand.
After the long journey following the plate, the plate finally sank at Isheri (the water at Berger-Ogun Kara Bridge), then the name "Awori" came into being: "Awo" (the Plate), "Ri" (Sank). After sometimes, the other wife of Olofin who did not conceive of a child, then because of it, Olofin consulted Ifa, and he was instructed to move further to the bank of big and salty water, there he should stay and his wife would be able to born a child. He then moved further, and got to the place called "Iddo" (m. Settlement) (near the today's Marina water), there his wife was able to give birth to children.

One of his sons who was able to swim across the lagoon, down to the down Island, named Aromire (the friend of water), was made the owner of the territory by their father Ogunfunminire, while the extension of the territories shared to siblings Moba (a daughter married to Ikoyi Eso), Iru (Victoria Island today) and Eleguish (Lekki). Therefore, before the death of Olofin Ogunfunminire, he had shared all the territories to his children, including his children-in-laws.

Many years after, the Iddo had became the trade center, where the Ijebu, Ilaje, Oyo, Egun and other territories came to trade, while also the Dutch sailed to buy Mable Blocks of Salt, Pepper, Fishes, Ivory, Gin and Cotton. All the trade concentrated at Iddo, as the edges of the market to left and to the right were Farms (Oko/Eko/Iko) of crops and avenue to and from to the Iddo market. Also, downward across the lagoon was also the farm of Aromire, known as Isale Oko/Eko or Iko (Downward Farm), where he had the standing trees of different kind of fruits and peppers which also partially became a market. The Idu-Igaran (Standing of Pepper trees) is of the Pepper Farm, Idu-imota (Stands of Knowing Price/Trade) was farm-to-resellers center in that downward. The Osere trees being used for Ikan (carpentry) to make chair, stools, canoes and other played significant role in concentration of buy and selling in that Idu-Imota that attracted some traders to cross the water to buy on Aromire farm. Osere tree at Igboosere (Osere Forest) used for planks and woods to carve at Onikan (the Carpenters) moved finished products to Iddo market.

Sometimes in the mid or late 1600s, which is about two centuries and more than 10th generation of the Olofin Aworis, the Benin sailed in to also trade. During the reign of Omo N'Oba Ohuan who visited the Iddo market, and was so honored.

The dispute between a successful trader called Aina in the market and the other rivals, being labeled a "witch"; she decided to take her case to palace of Benin where she reported her case. The Oba of Benin sent his chiefs to mediate and settle the dispute, but on their way, they spotted the woven fishing basket and arrow hook , which they mistook for readiness for war. The chiefs went back to the palace for what they saw, and then the Oba sent his army, led by Aseru, the prince of Benin to conquer Iddo and extensions. Yes, Aseru with his army entered Iddo town, the army attacked and dispersed people, burnt trading stands and stalls, the Iddo city deserted, till they fought down to Isheri.

The Olofins fought back, with the help of their in-law from Oyo, Ikoyi Eso (The Army Guards of Oyo means "Ikoyi Eso"wink, led by Ashipa (m. the Frontier) that considered the Benin invasion as "cheat" on the defenseless people; they joined the Olofin and conquered the Benin army and even drowned prince Aseru in the Isheri water , to death. Ashipa who led the guards from Oyo, took the body of prince Aseru in self-arrest with other Benin army to Benin palace, he was imprisoned in Benin for many months, but was later released and lived in the palace for sometimes, the Oba of Benin gave an instruction with "Royal Drum" given to Ashipa to become an Oba on Isale Eko land, with other appointed chiefs to make the installation of Ashipa as Oba Eleko possible. But yet, the Idejos (Aromire and brothers) did not agree, their term was made clear that: for Ashipa to be an Oba Isale Eleko on the land given to the Benin, their ownership must not pass the of land and space given to them by Aromire as garrisson/base at Iga-Iduganran, that the land, water and fishes on Isale Eko belong to Aromire, they'd also take the 70% of Chieftaincy and the tax collections taken by the Oba in Isale Eko must be shared among the Oba and the Idejos, with other portion taken to Benin. This agreement was not settled for many years, until the death of Ashipa. Late his son Ado, was installed with the agreement of ownership and Obaship.

The fall of Oba Eleko from BENIN Lineage to IJESHA Lineage: The Oba Ado, Gabaro, Akinsemonyin and Eletu Kekere were the last Oba that was connected to Oba Bini. The kind of system of Obaship title of Benin is quite different to other Obaship title, mostly among Yoruba kingdoms. The Benin system use the first child to be in line to the throne, while the Yoruba system uses the system of all princes are entitled, taken the princes name to Ifa (Oracle), Ifa trim them down to, then the other princes vote.

This is the case of Eletu Kekere who did not have a child during his 5 years reign as Oba Eleko. Erelu Kuti who was the Wife of the Ologun Kutere was the Royal lineage, since she could not become an Oba, his husband Ologun Kutere was installed by the Chiefs, then the Obaship fell into the hand of a descent of an IJESHA, called OLOGUN KUTERE, who fathered the Kosoko, Akitoye, Osinlokun, Idewu Ojulari and Eshugbayii with other wives from Ijebu, also his grandchildren are Dosunmu, Oluwole, Adeniji Adele, Oyekan and Akiolu (his mother was Benin descent and last wife).

Eko: - is the consist of Ikoyi, Victoria Island , Ebute Metta, Yaba, Apapa and Isale Eko+
Isale Eko: - Lafiaji, Ita Faaji, Idumota, Idumaagbo, Igbosere, Campos
Lagos Island:- Isale Eko, Ikoyi, Oniru (Victoria Island), Lekki

This sounds so convincingly genuine and very detailed. I'll go with your version of Lagos history. You did justice to this. Well done.

Lagos Island belings to the Yoruba Awori

The Oba of Lagos Domain was between Idumota and Obalende Markets and the Land belonged to the Yoruba Awori Aromire family

And Erelu Kuti was the MOTHER of Oba Olugun Kutere who was the son of the Ijesha Alagba

Also the first Oba of Lagos was an Awori Man who was the Ashipa of Isheri his son became Oba Ado

except for some minor corrections
this is the Authentic Version of Lagos History to which all the Obas in Lagos State and it's surroundings all agree

Oba Ado was an Awori Man from Isheri and
he had a Benin Princess Mother

Badagry ,Seme,Porto Novo Area was also under the Alafin of Oyo
the Oba Soji of Porto Novo signed a Treaty with the French because he didn't favour the British after they had angered him by Bombarding Porto Novo at almost the same time as Lagos in order to end the Slave trade

After the Berlin Conference the British and French allowed the agreement to Stand and so Porto Novo fell under France

Till today Porto Novo's Oba is still a Traditional Subject King of the Alaafin of Oyo

Erelu Kuti was the mother of Ologun Kutere who had an Ijesha father called Alagba

Oba of Lagos does not have territory in Lagos Island, its only Idu-Iganran land gifted to him as base, that plots of lands his highest territory. The Oluwa of Lagos (Lord of Lagos) an Awori is actually an Over-Lord in Lagos over the Oba Eleko. Oluwa Amodu Tijani was even more respected by the King of England, King George V, the father of Queen Elizabeth. He was even the closest friend of Herbert Macaulay, the prime minister of Nigeria, who the Awolowo, Zik and Saudana were looking up to, that they could not do anything without his approval.

Even the land, from UAC and Church of Christ at Isale Eko, thats where the territory of Oniru started from, later they moved their palace to that of Mekunwe, where ferries and traders were paying to cross to and fro, 5 cowries as toll, I'm talking about Five Cowries Creek Ferry Park in Victoria Island today. Then later the British chased them again, where they finally moved the palace to Makoko village, called Iru Estate today.

"EKO" means "Farm" in Awori dialect. Regular/General Yoruba dialect call it "OKO". Just like "Eba-Odan", general Yoruba call it "Ibadan", so Eko, Oko, Iko, r'Eko, Egbe, all these they are Yoruba language with different subgroups of dialect, referring to "Farm". Lagos Island was not the main "Eko", its the "Iddo" that all the harvests from the farms used to gather to sell, as getting to "Iddo" then, the left and right of Iddo were farms, so people coming Oyo, Ijebu, Egba and many other places before the Dutch arrival used to call it what the Awori call it as 'r'Eko", which means going to farm. The downward part to the other farm of pepper and woods is referred to as "Isale Eko", meaning the downward side of the Farm.

But people that keep asking, what is the meaning of Edo, Ado, Esan, Benin or Onitsha, Anambra, Owerri, Warri?
jades5050:

Please kingly go and ask Esan man or woman in EDO state the meaning of EKO and before that the word EKO that every body is calling can you tell me the meaning in Yoruba and from which tribe in part of Yoruba land

So Olu if you can make your research on this you will understand more and you will stop arguing on this matter
The Esan people in Benin refer themselves as Yoruba, not Edoid, they were carved into Bendel State from Ondo by the Federal government in the 70s. The Esan people are from Ile-Ife, so their language should be Yoruba, and would probably speak close dialect with Ondo, Ijesha and Ilaje. So tell me what is Farm called in Benin?

Lagos was never Benin Territory but Yoruba Awori Territory

Are you talking about all of Lagos or Isale Eko because there is a Huge difference
and even Isale Eko is 100% owned by the Yoruba Awori

So which part of Lagos did the Egbas and Ijebus conquer and Control because it was still under them when the British Arrived

Isale Eko is from Idumota to Obalende is that your Lagos you are talking about because even Victoria Island and Lekki are Ijebu territory

This matter has already been settled with proof and @christistruth was there, by the way, @christistruth is such a big liar that he should change his name.

Lagos and it's environs were part of a precolonial country called Benin Kingdom/empire whose leader is called the Oba of Benin. The Oba of Lagos was directly appointed into his position by the Oba of Benin.

There is no doubt about the above. Anybody can say what they want nowadays but history is quite clear.

The proverb goes that "Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown".
As regards, what the Oba did or didn't do in the 1990s, we can all have our opinions. But life was a bit different then, history was slightly less politicised back then. The balance that the fine balance has had to maintain since before restoration in 1914 cannot be imagined by regular people.
