The yearning of many educated citizens to ‘japa’ has been answered by the UK’s TRA (Teaching Regulation Agency). The TRA recently invited teachers to apply for QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) from February 2023. There’s likely to be an influx; so would the Agency be ready?

The prerequisite for this new scheme (initially open to nine countries, four of which are African) is ‘a minimum of two years teaching experience’, plus a bachelors degree and at least a C or better in English, Maths and a Science subject. These are the requirements needed to apply for an assessment-only QTS. An IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent qualification would suffice as evidence of English competency.

The UK’s www.gov.uk website provides further information on visa application. Also, it lists the pay for an inner London QTS teacher as £34,500.00 pa. It would probably be useful if the site educated those who haven’t worked in the UK that one third of the gross (11k plus) wouldn’t end up in the employee’s bank account due to taxes and national insurance deductions.

The significant deductions may not deter many, whose thoughts would still be: where do I sign? Another thought that would occupy their minds would be estimates of the net pay multiplied by the current exchange rate.

As educators continue to react to this new policy on four continents, some key perspectives that need to be explored are: relocation allowance, the reduction of teachers in a country with the greatest number of out-of-school children, as well as how, teachers arriving in the UK receive prior training/simulations that would enable them positively engage young learners in an English government-maintained school.

Okay, 28k per annum is quite small irrespective of where you live currently in the UK . I got a mortgage in the north east around 190k for 3bedroom semi detached. And I and my wife had to do joint application else it will be denied.

I will switch my profession once I get there. I'm a biochemist with masters degree teaching biology in a government school. I'm sure I should be able to run some diploma courses there that can grant me access to work there other than teaching job
