Gone are the days where HRs or Recruiters employ jobseekers based on their skills, expertise and competencies. We are in an era whereby most Nigerian jobs are based on recommendations, referrals, amongst others.

Mine was even before I graduated from school that I've been rolling out multiple CVs due to the fear of the unknown, and not a single feedback up until now. I really do not know maybe there's something I'm just not doing right or is a Nigeria factor happening to everybody.

I would like fellow nairalanders to share their experiences.

Yes, the jobs I have ever done and currently doing

Yes most of my past jobs are based on CV. My CV and linkedin always get me interviews and jobs often.

Recommendation is just one of the ways of getting jobs.

I have never gotten a job through recommendation in my life. All the job I have gotten was through CV application and this is the second NGO I am working. My friends too got jobs by application without knowing anyone. Me I graduated with third class served and I got a job immediately in Abuja. I receive offers for every 5 out of 7 interviews I have done . I have also been approached by recruiters on LinkedIn.

I have even noticed that, not that there are no jobs but the quality of graduates are very poor. I have been part of interviews and I just wonder why lots are not getting jobs. Some have very poor CV, no achievement, they basically copy and paste the job responsibilities verbatim, some are unprofessional they just attach CV without a small body to convince the recruiter why they should open that attachment, some snap and attach cv to email, some with ridiculous email addresses; Sexygirl247foru@gmail .com, some have very poor communication skills, some don't know how to use basic IT software and equipment. Imagine, how can you be looking for a job in 2023 and you cant use excel? Dey Play, just dey play.

The three places I worked when I was in full time job were gotten after applying with my CV.

However, since I became an Independent Consultant, I have not been given any assignment based on the application submitted. Everything has been through referral, friends, former colleagues, former employers and my alumni association network.

As a consultant, it would be difficult to be hired based on your experience or previous jobs. This is what I have observed in Nigeria.

Everything is about referral (Ima mmadu) - connection and recommendation. I have stopped submitting quote to any consultancy role that I dont have any connection.

Be a Job creator.... its easier to find partners who would venture into your well thought out business plan which you have initiated into reality even if its 10%..

Business opportunities are thought out in the period of need.. what you raised is a problem in the society, the urge should be on seeking a solution rather than amplifying the problem..

GAP as a clothing coy was thought out because they never had his size of jean in the stores, he could have complained to the manager to mandate the company to deal with his problem.. but he started a multimillion dollar company that solved a problem..

Find the solution in your problem.. thats your grace..
Thank you!

You are not using the right keywords in your CV. Go and take a 2nd look at your CV and rewrite it with the right keywords that will filter it out as what recruiters are looking for

But LinkedIn is more reliable.

Recruiters scout LinkedIn for who to recruit like yahoo boiz scout babalawo shrines for where to do strong oshole.

Update your LinkedIn page and make it ‘rich’ and watch recruiters bombard your page with offers.

Goodluck!

Even without CV at some level through power of connection job is certain. My roommate in school got his job without no interview no Cv no result presented( even up till now he's yet to collect his result). He's Dad work for a CEO of a big Accounting firm in lagos. As a technician person thus my friend Dad use to take my friend along with him to work right time before my friend secure admission, the CEO always see this my friend efficiency at work with his Dad and his efficiency at work made the CEO like my friend for his hardworking. So when my friend got admission he will always go work with his Dad during holiday at some point when he no longer present at work while in school the CEO will asked of him from his Dad.

To cut the long story short, the CEO gave job to my friend on a silver platter, he hand over my friend to the HRM of the firm, he was shown he's personal office the same day and he started work the following day. POWER OF CONNECTION.

YES, 6 companies in 5 years, including 2 offers on the UK and Germany , and yes, I have never gotten a job by referral.

Everything has been on the internet, including the first job that brought me to Lagos from nowhere.

I am not invested in networking at all, I just build my expertise for the next job and sprinkle God;s grace

Needless to say I graduated with 2:2

Throw away this mentality completely...please
I had this same mentality during my NYSC days, until I met someone on NL here that exposed me to the right information

People land jobs based on merit, well
I did and I still am...worked in 5 major organizations so far, currently working with one abroad atm...and all has been on merit, no connect, no referrals whatsoever

For entry level jobs,
What did you finish with?
you are in a good space if you finished with 2:1 and above because there are tons of entry level jobs with no experience requirements out there.
You just need to prepare for those technical tests and interviews like your life depends on it -Gmat/SHL/Aptitude practice tests were my bible at the time

If you didnt finish with 2:1 and above,
now is the time to dig into sellable and marketable skills: front end, back-end, digital marketing, cybersecurity, etc
6-9months of diligently acquiring any of these skill sets will land you internship job opportunities (research Fintechs in Nigeria) and then you can take it from there

If you have the right skills/information, getting a Job will be the least of your issue
Always remember, looking for JOB is a JOB in itself....don't sit and wait for anybody; WAKE UP and put in the work; you will be glad you did

Bro Nigeria is a mess already, talking about security tho, you don’t expect me to relocate down to Lagos when I got no one nor accommodation. Do you expect me to sleep under the bridge?

A couple of friends I had then in Lagos disappointed me. I know life is all about risk but it should be a calculated risk. No one is just willing to help, trust issues here and there. If you be OG you’ll definitely relate. Thanks for the advise tho cool

Everybody has sweet and reasonable excuses but achievers just find a way around those excuses. Regardless. when you are trully willing and ready, you will find a way. coming for an interview doesn't mean relocating. you can beg for virtuals, HR are humans. There are churches, there are cheap motels, UNtil you get rid of your expectancy on people, you will just keep getting disappointed. Take responsibility man, Nobody owes you anything. Trust God and Trust your timing. everything will just fall in place. Thanks for understanding too. my best wishes bro

Very possible to get appointments thru sending CV out. Gave jobs to many thru seeing their CVs.

try to get more relevant skills, am always interested in the skills aspect.... Its a major aspect in recruiting. And you may end up not searching for jobs once you got the necessary skills as you may end up bn the one asking for others cv
pls can you highlight few of those necessary skills?

All the jobs I have ever had came though submission of Cv online. I was a chronic Job applicant and was always called for interviews. most of them i usually ace until when it comes to the compensation package. I don't lower my standards. My best Advice..Apply for Jobs when you're still gainfully employed. No one will toss you around because they know you have options.

I see people posting “YES, they did” I don’t think most of the jobs came with good Renumeration. Not marketing jobs or contract jobs that comes with crumbs. Better job with a good salary na man know man.... I am not here to argue..
