Of Toxicity & Toxic Workplaces.

Stay long enough to make changes, plan your exit early enough to preserve your sanity. Pray for wisdom to know when to do what.

Yes we shouldn’t buckle at the first sight of toxicity but only the living and sane receive medals.

Let me advocate for HR. He/she is also an employee. And HR is helpless when orgnisational leadership is soulless.

Remember, HR is neither an art nor a science. Prescriptions to survive and thrive in unpleasant work situations are only guides. Take your ‘drugs’ with context in mind.

HR is not for the faint-hearted, it’s not for those who love working with people. Na the same people dey kill HR eventually.

Last line: stay long enough, leave early enough. Stay to play, leave to live.

Firstus Commentus.

I dedicate this feat to His Excellency, the incoming president of Nigeria, Mr Peter Obi. Who will clean up the current toxic situation we face in Nigeria.

Back to the Topic:

Working in a toxic environment is stressful. Your mental health and wellbeing will be at stake. If you are not careful, your self esteem will be affected.

As long as you are in that toxic organization, you will have to find something that gives you joy in that job. It will always help to motivate you.

Like the OP said, "Stay long enough, leave early enough. Stay to play, leave to live".

Please get your PVC and Vote wisely. Vote Mr Peter Obi of the Labor party for President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Love,

Angus.

When working in a toxic workplace, don't let them be the one to give you 'sudden' sack letter. Be the one to serve them 'sudden' resignation letter

Hmmm. I remember when I was working under my yoruba boss. That man made my day bad every blessed day that was what made me vow never to work for anyone in my life again. I stayed 10years and japa when I saved enough money and at a stage when he needed me the most.

the article leaves me with more questions at the end after reading it than it did at the beginning.

No sane person likes it. But people, with all their faillings, are what you will work with, and they come with their different doses of toxicity. You just find a way to maintain your sanity, and leave peacefully when.....

Toxic Employees make good bosses toxic.

But then we have a set of bosses who after reading steve jobs books on entrepreneurship becomes hyper toxic to employees and people around them.

What really makes an organization toxic, I used to think it was its leadership before , but after years of interaction with business leaders and employees and as a business man myself, I d say its a combination of factors.

1 The business environment
The Nigerian business climate is very harsh, it is not for the faint hearted, if you re trying to strive for excellence, you will face an uphill battle,
battle with regulators, customers, employees and competitors. You have to be tough as a CEO or your business will collapse.

2. The Leadership
Yes the attitude of the business owner affects everything about the organization, do they reward honesty, diligence? Do they see everyone
under them as slaves, have no regard to their feelings. The Nigerian CEO is parochial, you see them humble when they re starting up.
But once they make one hit, they become demigods, even start treating their customers badly, they become arrogant. They treat staff badly
especially those who started the business with them they suddenly want to get rid of all of them, this applies to churches as well (after-all its business).

3. The HR dept
Some HR specialist are terrible, they care only for their pockets, they give bad advice to business owners to cut corners, under pay and
over work staff with little benefits. Where did you think the idea of contract staffing came from ? Yeah , your beloveth HR.

4. The Staff
Followers mirror their leaders over time, even if the leader is abusive, followers imbibe this toxic behavior on a subconscious level.
It easy to deduce the kind of person a business owner is from interacting with their staff. If the staff steal and pilfer chances are that the
owner is like that. I remember one photo studio in those days , Fototek hmmm.

Many employees in Nigeria are evil, they steal, manipulate books, hate working but wants the boss to shake hands with them.

i think its rare to have a work environment in this part of the world where toxicity isn't practise, it only has degrees depending on the organisation structure.

Sadly, it takes patients and wisdom to sail thru. It can be so draining, affect productivity, start finding a way out. Stay patient even more, it helps find clarity. Ear more & talk less will also help you survive.

Just for your sanity, never try to fight it or change it especially when structures ain't build for that, it will hurt everyday and twice on monday. I hope we find what works for us and a work environment that actually doesn't encourage or reward such act.

I am off the rat race and toxicity. I work for myself and take my decision myself. The best feeling ever!!

It is not easy o as you may not be able to earn the same money you were earning while working. I took the risk in 2016 and no regret at all.

No sadist to report to, neither do I have to put up with any sadist colleague. Anyway, I never had any sadist or toxic work environment when I was working in companies. - I think I was fortunate to work in an environment that discourages toxicity.

My decision to be on my own was purely for freedom and to do things my way and at my own time and pace.
