500k is not ok for a single man? OP I'm sure you are just catching cruise, how do you want majority of us that earns less than 150k with children to feel?
Ur taste is very high o.

I'm not catching cruise...I have tried by cutting wasteful lifestyle...in fact I stopped womanising and drinking.

But the reality is I want my kids to go to the best schools and live in a decent environment.

In Abuja here, a decent 2 bedroom is 1.5-2 million. With my 500k per month, it will be very foolish to live in such apartments.

So, I have to do everything possible to double or triple my income to live in such environment.

The fact is that a 500k income in today’s Nigeria is very meagre.

Poster, be careful of getting advise from people whom their parents are paying their rents or still living with their families. Your expenses is not over the roof at all, majority of people on the thread don't even stock up their own food, while some are living abroad. 60k utilities and 100k feeding can be looked into and reduced. Don't eat out as much as you would. You need to inform your parents & sibling that you earn way less than you think, therefore their monthly allowance can be reduced.

Thank you for dropping this intelligent reply. Honestly, the main reason I created this thread is due to the fact that I struggle to keep my expenses below 300k.

60k - tithe
60k - utilities
100k - feeding
30k - Flex
30k - transport
50 - donations to my mom, dad and other expenses

Yes, I can afford a land in a local area here in Abuja, but it will take me years to save to buy any land over 10mill. The average land in places like Kubwa and Gwarinpa cost 15mill+

If u can reduce ur expenses u will achieve a lot.

Yes,a lot!

I'm single and I earn a little over 500k but my biggest worry right now is how little that amount is.

Here's the point, my monthly expenses is around 300k which leaves me with around 300k savings. That should be around 3.6 million in a year.

How you wan take buy land of 10million, build house, even buy a decent car of 6m?

In other words, it will take me years to achieve anything tangible.

To be frank with you all, I really hate my income. I wish I can increase it.

I'm just wondering how people cope with similar income especially for family members and still achieve life goals.
You're single but your monthly expenses is over 300k. Believe me even if you're earning 5m, it still wouldn't be enough for you.

You have to first minimize your spending.

You need to increase and, most importantly, diversify your income and its sources. The thing about increased earnings is that, as you earn, you are likely to spend more. However, that can be avoided by being disciplined. You don't have to be parsimonious, but you should be very frugal. What do you do?

- Download a budget app (Wallets or Monefy will do)
- Track every expense you make, even if it is buying pure water or recharge card
- At the end of the month, see how much you have spent, and look for items you should reduce, cut off and keep to state.
- The following month, you create a budget with a spending limit and stick to it. When your salary comes in, tell your bankers to send what you have calculated as the leftover to a different account.
- Diversify your income sources; invest in yourself by learning new skills to command a higher salary; begin investing after you have saved at least one-year of living expenses.

Budgeting is fun. Before now, I thought I could not budget, but I do it now. At the end of the month, I look for creative ways to cut costs by all means necessary. At the same time, I ensure I am learning new skills to diversify how much I earn. If you really want to send your children to the best schools (say, Loyola Jesuit or any top school in Abuja), you need to apply those measures, and I strongly suggest your new sources of income have to be dollar-denominated. One of the good things about budgeting is that, at first, it will be hard, but as you go on, you will get used to it as you spend less than you earn and live below your income, not above.

You that you're talking how much do you spend monthly on feeding. You make the 100k feel so big when in reality I need to manage to cope with that amount.
I can relate to your plight, infact last year with all d big take home I save nothing.
But this year nah red eye for me.
I have started reducing my expenses.
Try and get things in bulk.
Limit your monthly give away to your mum and dad alone.
That 30k u are flexing monthly can go along way too.

I like your submission. Things are really expensive now mehn. 1 Titus fish is over 1k and will be cut max into 4 pieces, sometimes 3 pieces sef. If he's to eat 3 meals daily, he'll be spending 30k monthly on fish alone, meat and chicken are even way expensive, you'll buy grains, beverages alone fit gulp 10k (Milo, coffee and milk), buy cereals, provisions (peanut butter, toothpaste, groundnut/cashew nut, cashewnut na 2k-2.5k and I fit finish 1 bottle within 3days, other provisions wey u go buy still dey). 6kg gas monthly is within 5-5.5k, what I do if fill 12.5kg for 9300 and use for 2months plus, a bag of pure water is 250-300 and can be finished within 2-3days. The truth is if we're to eat well, that 100k na just manage for a month, though you'll still have some food stuff spill over to the next month. I avoid beef now cos of the cost, too expensive. 3k beef no go pass 10 piece if dem cut am moderately, not big like party own oo grin. what I do is buy broiler and slaughter whenever fish don tire me. OP come dey stay Abuja join. Imagine op eating outside, he'd even spend more.
Feeding well is relative thou, so make everybody chop according to their pocket jare.

Whatever OP spends in Abuja, I spend twice of that in Lagos. So things are really crazy, thats why you have to be careful when you come on Nairalabd, these people still live in the parents houses.

I am not based in Nigeria but it still doesn't add up, spending N100k monthly on feeding and eating twice a day to save cost while in the same Nigeria, they are married men with 2 children who spend same monthly and they eat 3 times a day.

Is it right to contend with the amount he spends on feeding? Have you thought if he doesn't know how to negotiate/haggle prices and as such, he spends more than others in the market? I remembered during my undergraduate when I used to buy Herring Fish for an average of N30 a piece as of 1999 in Osun State until a friend went with me to the market, and we bought 5 pieces for N60. Since then, I beg him to go to the market with me each time I go to the market.

In essence, what some of us think is cheap is actually a rip off. Imagine, buying meats in kilo when he can go to the regular market and get it a bit cheaper.
