The presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has offered some insights into the industrial dispute between his government and medical doctors in 2013 when he was governor of Anambra state.

Obi, who spoke with Nigerian Youtuber, Adeola Fayehun, during a live interview on Monday in the early hours of Thursday said although the strike lasted for about 13 months, it did not affect a lot of people that were sick.

He said his attempt to bring change to the health sector in Anambra state by reviving moribund health institutions in the state was at the centre of the industrial dispute.


“It’s an issue I don’t want to discuss, our hospitals were not functioning, we tried to fund health facilities, it wasn’t working, there was strike in education too, we tried to fund our secondary schools and primary schools, it wasn’t working, so we decided that we have to have alternatives when I got to Anambra State, there was no single school of nursing that was accredited, no school of midwifery, no school of health technology – all these were not there.

“The hospitals were in bad conditions, same was the schools, we were putting money and we were not seeing the results, even bought ambulances, they disappeared, so I said no, we have to have an alternative. So we returned schools to the churches, the original owners, and say ‘we will fund you and of course, we saw the results, we moved from number 26 to number 1. The same thing happened with the hospitals, we built 10 schools of nursing, midwifery, and health technology but not through government

“For example, in Iyienu being owned by Church of Nigeria, they have the school of nursing, school of midwifery and school of health technology, we funded and resuscitated it and it was accredited, we went to Onitsha, Waterside being owned by the catholic church and Borromeo, their schools of nursing, school of midwifery, we resuscitated it, they were accredited and are functioning now.

“We went to St. Joseph Adazi, their school of nursing, school of midwifery, school of health technology we resuscitated it and it’s working. We went to Our Lady of Lourdes in Ihial, school of nursing, school of midwifery, school of health technology, we resuscitated it and it’s functional.

“We even worked with one of the Church of Nigeria bishops that were very committed in health issues, Bishop Ikeakor, and set up in Amichi Hospital, we built school of nursing, school of midwifery and school of health technology, these are schools that are there.

“So, in doing this, I had issues with the established bodies because they saw it that I was now doing things to the private sector. For me, the result was important and that was the issues

“During my governorship, I had strikes with teachers, doctors, different groups, but it was trying to change them from being what they used to be to what it should be. When you bring change, you will have enemies – all those who live off the old order, he added.

"Yes!" Peter Obi paved the way for success.


As an Anambra indigene I could tell you that there are few villages in Nigeria you can be compare to mine (village/hometown).

How do you really expect God to show you the way? Are you expecting God to come down from heaven and show you the way.

He has given you the answer to your prayer already. Your duty is to vote. That U.S.A, UK, France, Germany, Canada, Japan, U.A.E and the likes became what it is today is because they took their destiny into their hands.

They voted In a leader that stopped nonsense and set the country on the right path. Is it that this Leaders don't have propaganda by enemies and opponents surrounding them? No.

They do but the people made the best choice. Nobody is a saint. Peter Obi is not. But I am 101% certain that Peter Obi is Legit.

Conmess, is the salary payment structure of medical doctors in Nigeria. And every state has different salary payment structure to their Doctors,
As at the time , the Drs in Anambra went on strike, Anambra was the least, in terms of salary payment to Medical doctors in Nigeria.
The Doctors, then had a meeting with Obi, who was the Gov, during, An agreement was reached, he promised to increase the salary with certain %. Which all of them agreed. It was during the time of implementation, that Obi failed to keep to his promise, which led to 13 months old strike.
I know of many Drs in Anambra who who moved to Enugu, Ebonyi and other states because of low salary structure in Anambra during Obi tenure,
I was not told, I had many Drs who were victims of this. I witnessed the 13 months strike, nobody told me, I was in Anambra, during this time.

I will never belief any write up about politician . let talk about their action we saw . This current Anambra state does not justified that Obi is good .

For Obi to allow doctors to strike for more then a Year signify he is like others as well . He should accept the blame . He did not have any reason to allow health sector to be stranded for 13 months. All the victims will never forgive him.

You are actually the one misleading the Public.

Regarding the CONMESS issue you mentioned, is it the low salary structure he infused or the one he inherited from previous government?

The doctors where offered 60% salary increase prior to the initial agreement because the state was short of funds but they refused because they were listening to political God fathers who have looted the state in the past (some of the enemies of the land) who made them believe striking will make the state accept their demand.

It still boils down to the fact that he was being fought.

When they went on the strike they still had no option than to call it off themselves when they knew PO's government was being honest.

I know who I am supporting and I am doing so with my full chest. Never to relent. If this is all you all have on him I will vote him 10X over the others cause I know the full story and also he is 10x better than any political candidate you can think of at the moment.
