cococandy: Beautiful and bountiful! You should be very proud! How does it feel, not having to spend money on goodies such as basil and butter lettuce (which is so expensive in stores) |
Re: Food Section Derailer’s Paradise: All Food Lovers Are Welcome by cococandy(f): 6:52pm On Sep 21, 2022 |
Kobojunkie: I definitely agree. And those are all from planters not ground garden. Only the lettuce came from the ground. Therefore minimum effort for these ones. |

cococandy: May I ask a question? Are you enjoying your herb and veggie gardens as much as you’re enjoying your flowers? Is it hard to say which you’re enjoying more? |
Re: Food Section Derailer’s Paradise: All Food Lovers Are Welcome by cococandy(f): 7:00pm On Sep 21, 2022 |
1stGenAmerican: The flowers are not in bloom right now. Only a few dahlias, one rose bush and the marigolds in the garden bed. So definitely the veggie garden is winning for now. I made a mojito from the mints last week. 1 Like |

Fira09 her let’s talk here. What do you know? Was she hacked? |
Re: Food Section Derailer’s Paradise: All Food Lovers Are Welcome by Fira09(m): 9:36pm On Sep 26, 2022 |
cococandy: Something like that, cos I ain't sure she will have all the time to modify all her post(97 pages), that's very long and could take hours. Something is fishy though. Since you mentioned her in the other thread, if she doesn't reply(maybe within 2 days) then know the account has been hacked. But, it very hard to hack one's account on Nairaland or maybe someone(friends with her Nairaland password) log in and did the modifying. This is my opinion, not too sure. Modified: She has even attest that nothing is going on with her account.... she's still the one behind it. 1 Like |

Where is Cocoacandy and the rest of the monikers who live in the US? Maybe monikers in Naija can help too. I’m currently hosting and having a debate. I added eggplant (aubergine) to one of my dishes (pictures loading) and I think that what we call eggplant is close to what is called garden egg but garden egg is a different variety of eggplant that is white and green. My Nigerian dad is enjoying the food but says garden egg and eggplant (aubergine) are very different. Who’s right and who’s wrong? Please God, let me be right and my Dad wrong so I can laugh at him! |

1stGenAmerican: Dad is right Garden eggs (in my opinion) are just a smaller family member of egg plants. They are a bit bitter too. Let me see if I can find pictures Edited 1 Like

Only $5. He’s very kind. I didn’t plant anything in the winter. And It’s still too cold for spring/summer planting but I’m starting seeds indoors for march planting. Let’s see how it goes. I might add another garden bed and a trellis for the climbers. We’ll see. 1stGenAmerican: 2 Likes |

@1stgenamerican how’s your planting season going? my peas are doing so well I could cry and my strawberries are bearing tiny fruits. So cute. However, Do you know anything about keeping lavender alive? Mine are dying. I’ve tried switching between watering and not watering too much. Took them Indoors and then Outdoors. Every garden video on the internet says something different but they all agree that lavender is hardy like rosemary and will survive anything. My rosemary bush from last year is thriving. why is my lavender dying? 😭😭😭 Here’s my pea bush and recent harvest. It’s still has so many pea pods. The more you harvest, the more pods come in. 10 Likes 2 Shares

cococandy: It’s going well and I’m so excited for daylight to come so that I can send you some pictures! Your peas are amazing! What a bumper crop! Lavender does seem to mimic rosemary and I used to have numerous problems keeping both alive. My first question is did you plant this year’s lavender in the same kind of soil as last year’s? My first suggestion is to transplant it into a different type of soil—cut off any brown or gray parts, shake the existing soil loose from the roots, sprinkle a liberal amount of cinnamon on the roots (fungus loves at attack lavender) and plant it into a different pot with different soil, adding in about a fourth teaspoon of Epson salt. When you water it once weekly, water it indirectly—pour the water into the sides of the pot away from the plant, and put it indirect sunlight. Lavender plants are finicky and unlike other plants, like being left alone. Please let me know how it works out for you. 3 Likes 1 Share |

I used a pot and new soil but I didn’t know about the cinnamon and Epsom salt trick. I will do that I’m excitedly waiting to see your plants 😌 1stGenAmerican: |

1stGenAmerican please come give me some tomato tips. I want to be like you and get good tomatoes this season. Half My seedlings died the first time. The other half I transferred and they are doing well now but I want them to grow taller before flowering. They are flowering too early. I remove the flowers to encourage more root and stem development. And I use basil and calendula as companion plants to keep away pests and hornworms. So far so good. But the flowers keep coming back and see how short they are? Do you fertilize? 2 Likes

cococandy: Help is here! Lovely garden you have there! Yes, I fertilize. A childhood neighbor used to add baking soda when fertilizing tomatoes to produce sweeter fruit and it’s something I’ve always done. The steps you’ve taken so far have been great and your setup is neat and conducive to growth. Please, tell me what you’re fertilizing with and your watering schedule. I’ll be able to help from there. |

cococandy: I also need to check on your lavender and rosemary. How are they? I have two transplant tips for you that can help with both. Add a handful of sand and a small handful of pebbles to the soil that you’re transplanting them to and water them only once weekly. Both plants are native to places with rocky, sandy, fast draining soil so you want to create that same type of environment for yours. Think about how well they grow in the Mediterranean and France. |

1stGenAmerican:Thank you 😊 I have a nightly watering schedule and so far I’ve used some food scraps (not much) and the store bought tomato food from green acres. I’ll add the baking soda. I’m all for sweeter tomatoes. |

1stGenAmerican: My rosemary is thriving. I gave up on the lavender. There’s a little patch of lavender left but I don’t think it will thrive. I want to use the lot for okra and other stuff now. I’ll try again another time. 1 Like |

cococandy: For really tall and hearty plants, I like fertilizing with Epsom salt mixed with 2 parts hot water. Out of all the veggie and plant fertilizers I know that works the best and the fastest. There’s a Miracle Grow that is sold everywhere, even dollar stores and Walmart in a yellow and green box. The fertilizer itself is bright blue and if you sprinkle a little around the plant base, you’ll get great results (although I still think the Epsom salt works best). |

cococandy: I’m ready for okra too! I have my seeds all germinated and the Almanac says that I need to put them into the soil on the first day where both the daytime and nighttime temps reach 70 degrees. I’m so excited, I have two varieties that I’m trying. 1 Like |
