The Op wasn't against buying expensive phones you can afford. He was curious and asking why some people use expensive phones and have next to nothing as savings. If you use a phone of N400k or half a million and you eat from hand to mouth,or you have a miserable N50k in your account, you're a loser period.
You can give your opinion now since you now know what the thread is about. You probably jumb to comment without reading the OP's body of content before.

You wan explain to a woman? A woman that has used her hands to type proof that she's WOMAN, not those few decent ones of her gender. Don't you know most of the confused men in life do what they do because of urging from women, directly or indirectly? Maybe you need to reflect more on the destruction of society since women started to get "liberated"; worldwide, I'm talking about, not just Nigeria. These people were made for this. According to my Alhaji: "woman [themselves] na market" (i.e. a woman is a commodity herself).

An eel

Women are the Boko Haram, kidnappers, Yahoo, drug lords, armed robbers, corruption nuisances, herdsmen destroying this country presently and Africa abi,

In the world, women are the ones behind the Russia Ukraine war, earthquake, floods and all other cesspit abi

Look who your mentor is, an alhaji, a man pedohiling young innocent girl child who sees them as market, or maybe your mother fall under a commodity, of course your level of illiteracy must show one way or the other

Again, an eel.

It's usually second hand phones na.

I rarely see people buy brand new iPhones. It's all these "London used"

I also know this because I'm a blogger and when I do keyword research, it's usually Nigerians asking for the price of UK used iphones. Funny thing is that, they don't do this for other phones like Tecno, Infinix etc.

I read the body of Op opinion and my previous comment still stands

They buy it because they can afford it, what they have in their account before and after the purchase doesn't affect you and Op's existence, just cos they have nothing after buying it doesn't mean they can't have enough later, or you think rich people don't encounter tough times? Common sense should tell you that for them to be able to afford it means they once had more than enough, so look away from people's way of life if the oppression hurts you and face your existence.
you're right to some extent but mind you some have the mindset of "struggling to fit in" have experienced many cases of such.
person wey worth 3M go buy car of 2.6M e noh reach 5 months e don sell ham, back to square 1,. is that not stupidity??
some struggled, borrowed even stealed just to "feel among", so much inferiority complex around...

You'd be surprised at how global the 'problem' is!

Nigerians are simply not different.

Who do you think are the prime audience for high class fashion products? It is the middle and not even the rich. The middle class like to look rich. Most self made millionaires are actually very prudent with money. You'd be shocked to know how serious consumer debt in many rich countries is. Many consumers are loaded up with credit card debt up to their eyeballs and many declare bankruptcy.

I can bet anything that the average Nigerian youth now has at least an iPhone worth over 200,000 to 1 million naira, and most of these people don’t have money in their bank account. They have no job, they have no car or house or any tangible source of income but you see them with extremely expensive phones.

First I’m curious how do you people even afford these phones?

Secondly why will you choose to hold a 600k phone in your hand and have less than 50k in your account after?

Do you truly feel happy about that?

I’m not judging sincerely I’m only curious, why is this so common that we have a youth population of people who have less than 100k in their accounts but use phones of half a million naira?

iPhones are damm expensive, the iPhone 14 alone is 1 million, the rest are from 200k to 1 million, you barely see these people with old model iPhones it’s always the latest ones, especially in Lagos.

When we bought the phones, we had more than 600k in our account

1. It's the luxury belief; people want to associate themselves with things that signal high status. Using these things separates you from the crowd and makes you able to identify with people of higher status.

2. It can be a manipulative technique to gain attraction or deceit. That's the average human for you.

3. Funnily, if everyone starts using Iphone pro max, it no longer remains a luxury but a common thing. Nokia 3310 + an MTN sim card was once a luxury, but where are we now?

4. The way you'll talk to a car mechanic when he's under the bonnet in his workshop will be different from the way you talk to him when he's riding his client's Bentley. Ditto for a broke beautiful woman with expensive wear in a club and when she's walking around in her mosquito infected face-me-I-face-you ghetto. The same people but different manner of approaches.

5. Humans are myopic. That's why you can easily deceive them. They fall for the luxury bias and halo effect frequently unhindered.

Notwithstanding, some rich people can afford high-end goods; no big deal. However, it still boils down to the status symbol.

Thanks.

You’re right to some extent though but
Everyone has a money draining habit actually. Same
Mark spent a lot on private yatch .

But generally black man has that show off mentality.

According to stats in 2020, black people spent more money on nike shoes and some other designers than the white who own the companies.

I don't think what anyone decides to do with their money should be of any concern to anyone unless it threatens you.

Money is useless if it doesn't bring you happiness and satisfaction....
Some people are happy staring at their account balance in the bank...
Others derive joy looking at the expensive cars in their garage...
Some, it's in the number of women they bed others it's in number of landed property they possess, there are still people who will empty their bank accounts to travel for vacation in a foreign country.

Let everyone indulge in whatever makes them happy cos in the end that's d value of money.....to give satisfaction.

Personally, I have gold jewelleries that one will think are they given out for free, some are worth more than cars in value😂😂
... bracelets, necklaces, rings e.t.c, I have them all

I am not trying to showoff or oppress anyone, just dat the sight of gold on any part of my body is always orgasmic and makes me happy......

Ladies and most young men abroad flash expensive clothing, jewelleries etc but actually broke niggas.

Stop generalising and let people enjoy what tickles their fantasy, they ain't spending your money, if they hold 1m phone and drink Garri to sleep it's their problem not yours.

Op, firstly, Nigeria is not a poor country and secondly, not everyone buys an IPhone for showoff like some people have been implying. You also sounded too prejudging to have presumed that most of the ppl using these iPhones don’t have up to 100k in their accounts and that doesn’t look nice. Try changing your mindset, circle and perhaps, your environment and you’ll realize that not everyone uses an iPhone just for show (what you really wanted to hear) and that almost everyone in the US and the other supposed ‘saner climes’ uses an iPhone. Apple enjoys so much radical followership and fanbase in these places that ppl would queue and sleep at Apple stores just to have a feel of the latest iPhones and no one sees it as being a luxury and in fact, iPhones are not the most expensive smartphones we have today.
I digressed a little, talking about ‘saner climes’ to make you understand that the ‘iPhone craze’ is not just a Nigerian thing like you were trying to insinuate, good things don’t always need to be advertised.
Lastly, iPhones are not as expensive as you think, blame your country and her visionless government for making them look like luxurious possessions; blame the Naira and the clueless people at the wheel of this country’s economy, blame that bald-headed vulture at CBN, the new iPhone 14 promax would be sold for 250k assuming the Naira was still where it used to be under GEJ and Late Ya’adua .
