Godwin4444: That's not fallacious at all , I once experienced it . I applied for a prepaid for my flat in August 2020 but to my surprise I received a bill thru text mssg in December d same year(meanwhile I was still paying for d estimated billing) and all thru 2021 to mid-2022 even without supplying me d metre I requested for. The annoying part is dt i left d house in 2022 yet d mofos did sent me about two months billing before they stopped. The overall debt on a metre dt was not supplied to me as at today is over 180k 1 Like |

maasoap:You tried o. The first thing I check when getting a new apartment is their current bill. If there's anything, we must have agreement that I won't be held responsible for the indebtedness. I told my former landlord this and we agreed on it. When I changed apartment, I was lucky, na NEPA de owe them, so, it was a clean slate for me. 1 Like 1 Share |

Topshow2010:When you apply for prepaid, you'll be billed the current estimated bill in your area until bill is delivered. It is expected that you won't be paying NEPA bills until you received the meter. That's the policy of NERC then. So, if you apply, you'll have to stop paying monthly bills or you pay those and when supplied, you visit them to deduct total paid from your programmed meter bill. 2 Likes |

From what I see, landlords know dey this thread. Na mostly people when know no how things dey work, just dey vex dey talk. Feb 1st 2023 I requested a new account for my tenant and also told them to send me payment token for prepaid meter straight. Meaning as my acc no comes out, it would be processed for prepaid meter immediately, once I make payment for prepaid meter, max in two weeks time, my prepaid meter would be installed. This morning morning I got the following message from ikeja 60863...... Your Bill for Jan 2023: Tariff: D-Non MD Rate: 31.24 Read Code: D LAR: PAR: Consumption: 490.00 Curr. Charges: N16,455.67 Previous Balance: N0.00 Payment: N0.00 Adjustment: N0.00 Amt Due: N16,455.67 Due Date: 17 Feb 2023. For enquires call 017000250 Detail: eservices.ikejaelectric.com/billing/ To Make Payment Please click https://ie-payments.com/ KYC Registration: https://kyc.ikejaelectric.com Consent to MAP Metering: https://www.ikejaelectric.com/mapcustomer/ The way it works, once you register a house for meter, am talking of postpaid meter, NEPA will start billing you. From my experience, after the OP's landlord registered the acc, it took the landdlordmonths before the prepaid meter was installed, due to this, the postpaid acc was billed monthly, that was while you had debt on the acc. On my own acc, nothing concern me, the tenant go pay the 16k, I opened account for the tenant, not for myself, once the 200unit when follow the prepaid meter come finish, the tenant go dey pay the debt as him dey recharge. OP the account was opened for you guys, the landlord decided it's better he moves his tenant to there own prepaid meter because of wahala, so make una pay the debt.... The most important thing is, it's a fresh acc, meaning the postpaid acc was newly open. 1 Like 1 Share |

haybee2018: Look, I wrote it in the first paragraph that he should find a way to sort it out with the landlord basically through mutual dialogue and agreement. I've been in a house where tenants where shouting for prepaid meter, and when the man eventually bought 6 prepaid meters about #85, 000 each, 5 of the tenants that were paying #2000 monthly, all ran away with an average of #450,000 on each meter. In the days of estimated billings, I found out that they don't even eat if there's no light. As soon as the light comes even if its 2am, that's when they will start cooking with hot plates. So they ran away from the house leaving the man with the debts. The poor man passed away with the stress they caused him few months after. Have you ever wonder why many people are building personal houses nowadays? People don't build houses for rent like our parents did in their time any more because tenants can be so troublesome and most landlords don't and will never recoup the money they use in building the house let alone interest before they were killed by additional tenants trouble. You can do the maths viz-a-viz the average death age in the country! You know quite well, that while on estimated billings, it is very likely that the monthly electricity bill is more than the 5K per person he was paying which consequently make up for the arrears when prepaid meter came. Like I said, there are just few options: 1. Dialogue and settle the payment with the landlord. (Best - As it would be a structured payment, usually 40% - 60%) 2. If the landlord insist he pays and he objects, he can decide to move out or stay in darkness. 3. If the landlord agrees to pay, he also reserves the right to increase his rent by whatever how much suits him. 4. If he leaves, the landlord can start afresh with a new tenant with max rent in his mind, agency, commission, caution fees and others. Once all those are paid, the landlord would only need to pay off the arrears once for the new occupant while collecting the max rent every year. Sometimes in life, we need to make it a win-win for both sides. The landlord has extended good will enough by purchasing prepaid meter. The question I have for the op is....Did he, or Did he not accrue the 53k in all honesty and fairness? 1 Like |

WantsandMore: You know this is Nigeria. That's what they do ooo. Once you applied for prepaid meter, they know that this person want to run away from their "estimated choppings" thats when they will start heaping up bills and delay for months so that the money go plenty. After Nigerian Goverment officials/Politicians, the police, NEPA is the next in terms of corruption index. After NEPA is the remaining populace. It's a vicious circle, wall-to-wall corruption in Nigeria. 1 Like |

I will advise you to talk to your landlord about the debt on the meter, you can't really blame the landlord because he wanted the tenants to have a separate meter which is ok. Since you've been paying the landlord your energy bills regularly, I think he shoukd have made you guys aware that he has gotten a different billing account for you the tenants. And you should have been paying on the new account instead of him still collecting money from the tenants to buy token on the prepaid meter he's sharing with you. As soon as he is making moves for a separate account, he should have separated the connection from the pole and you guys should have been paying on the new account. The best thing is to share the embedded bill on the new meter to all of you hitherto using his own meter. Make sure you have your points as you approach him. |

WantsandMore: Shey be you dey see am? I applied on the 1st of Feb ohh. So OP know understand how this things works. The truth is, the OP landlord apply, but the prepaid meter was installed like three months later, so NEPA billed the house for the three months. Nothing concern the landlord, the landlord done do the right thing by buying prepaid meter for una. For my place, each tenant dey on individual prepaid, and there rent na 100k per year, so na only this tenant go clear the bill, nothing concern me. 1 Like 1 Share |
Re: Prepaid Meter: How Do I Handle This With My Landlord? by okine4real: 4:03pm On Feb 13, 2023 |
gabbasin: You make sense here. The landlord should have disconnected the tenants from his prepaid meter the very first month he applyed for a new postpaid acc no, as he disconnected the tenants, he would have connected the tenants to the pole directly and once NEPA bill comes monthly, the tenants go sort them self, if them know pay the monthly bill NEPA would disconnect there light every month, and by the time the tenants prepaid meter is installed, any debt on the postpaid bill will be put on the prepaid meter... Na your landlord nor calculate am well. 1 Like |

CaptainFM1: Your points are clear....BUT STILL i feel i shouldn't be responsible for what i didn't owe....haba!....guess u know that's where the place of TENANCY AGREEMENT comes to play??.......just as u've mentioned above... some tenants ran away seeing a debt of 450k on such prepaid...if na me sef, i won't wait. You know most weapon they use is: U can't just rush and pack-out like that knowing the cost implication of getting a new apartment AND on the other hand if you stay back....u might likely not be able to cope with being in darkness for long. IT'S JUST SO PATHETIC! . God in His infinite mercy will provide a happy home for us all! |

Eagba: My own If I'm moving out,I can carry my prepaid meter provided I'm moving to the house that is within the coverage of the nepa office, for example, if you dey gbagada, the nepa office there covers ifako, oworo, bariga, new garage So if I want to move to Lekki, I can't carry my prepaid, I can sell it to the next occupant of my place, but if it's within the place where the nepa office covers,I can carry my prepaid |

This is very easy issue 1, contact the customer care of the said prepaid meter [ power supply] like Ibedc or Iked, report the issue and let them check information of previous owner which they will invite him 2, if there's no documents of transfer of ownership your landlord is risking jail term The earlier you make your report the better the solution |

haybee2018: Haba....You read that part to your own advantage! They ran away because they incurred 450k and they couldn't use hotplate again with prepaid meter. They were the first tenants....that's the kind of dilemma that some wicked tenants put landlords. People always think landlords are wicked, but from my experience, tenants are more wicked than landlords. If you can avoid tenants by all means, avoid them! Afterall, no matter how much you're collecting as rent, most landlord won't recoup the money used in building the house before they kpai! |

wunmi590: What a comment without due diligence, have you asked the guy what appliances he’s using for you to conclude that he can use less than 5k in a month ? How can you call the landlord a thief just because they’re using same meter as if the tenant was not told about meter sharing before hand , are you aware of that ? |

Freethought: Simply write to your disco that you were connected to your landlords meter while waiting for a prepaid meter. Also, state that the disco never connected you directly to the grid thus you are not liable to such debt. Your landlord should be involved in the letter as well. If you received no response after 1 week, kindly escalate to NERC. Note, NERC resolution might take up to six months but you have to fight the battle. I had a similar issue when my single phase meter got burnt. I pressed the neck of everyone involved until all debts were cleared. This is not gentleman's business, press, press and press. 1 Like |

CaptainFM1: In all my house, no tenant can bypass. Them know born you well. You can't incure debt for me, they only incured debt when prepaid meter was not avail then. One of my structure, I have 15 prepaid meters, each tenant to his prepaid. You can't bypass, I dey come around and check my house. Any tenant when get AC, dey connect it to there prepaid meter, if I catch you, hummm you know know say landlord dey get madness. One time tenant kept 430k for me, I paid it, all the tenant that left the debt packed out, na so I give all new tenant individual prepaid and I paid the 430k debt, shey me when done wise, another side dey kept about 1.1M debt for me, as prepaid come out, I locked all 8 acc nos to prepaid, there by know more monthly bills, then I distribute the prepaid to tenants according to how them done stay long for the house. Now the debt is around 690k now. As them recharge, NEPA dey collect there 50percent. 1 Like |

I can’t blame your landlord. It’s a theft strategy by your electricity distribution company. I applied for one myself only for me to discover it came with a lot of debt. I vented anger on their manager but at last I was asked to be paying periodically till I offset everything. My question is how can new bill come with so much debt ? |

Nwodosis:Wrong advice. It's your choice to us the Prepaid meter or not. Since you were paying the bills he was requesting from you, you have the right to tell him you don't need light from the new shared prepaid meter. You can't be taking money from me for the past 2 years and still impose another bill that I clearly did not owe. A similar incident happened here that I'm living presently. The landlord was owing N800,000 and went to apply for prepaid meter. That was before I moved in. He told me there was a standard electricity bill of N2,500 that I will be paying but he did not tell me that 9 flats will end up using one prepaid meter. One afternoon I came home and realized there was no light in the house while the rest buildings have electricity. I went and inquired and was told that PHCN installed prepaid meter the previous day and the unit is exhausted. I called my landlord on phone and asked him about what I heard and he confirmed it, I told him outrightly that I can't share prepaid meter with the 8 other tenants. That's how I diconnected my wire from the main source and got power somewhere else. The bottom line is, he gave me house not elctricity. |
Re: Prepaid Meter: How Do I Handle This With My Landlord? by CaptainFM1: 6:08pm On Feb 13, 2023 |
okine4real: Nice one. Na so this thread makes me to chat IKEDC up this afternoon. I told them I want to increase the settlement plan percentage to 80% - 20%. There's one tenant that I don't know how he's doing it cos I'm monitoring the reduction every month, and it appears the guy only recharge #500 per month despite the fact that I know he uses light a lot. So with the 60% settlement which is #300, from my calculation the #107,000 current arrears will be fully paid in 30years! Except if I don't wish well for him, I don't want any tenant to stay more than 10years in my house before building their own house. I do encourage them to buy land and start gradually. And to be honest, my good and faithful tenants always end up building their own house, while the bad ones keep running from one rent property to another. |

I am in the same situation, I paid 5k monthly and I hardly sth at home like I haven't stayed for 10 consecutive days in the house a month. Our landlord even collect money for water in a self contained apartment ooo. Now he told me to bring 20k that he want to bring another prepaid for us so we 3 people can be using it. Those landlords are just miscreants little wonder their children are not usually in places to be found. |
