Why Is It That True Lagosian Always Bear A Foreign Or English Surname ? by Legendguy(m): 11:33am On Mar 07, 2023
Just like Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour that contesting for governor of Lagos, Funsho Doherty also running for governor of Lagos bears an English surname.
Former lagos governorship candidate, Funsho Williams bears an English surname, compared to typical yorubas from south west hinterlands that bears their native surname.
Is there a reason for true lagosians to bear foreign surnames while making their first name yoruba name?

You are the only one who doesn't know that when slave trade ended, there were slave ships caught through the years. Slaves on those ships were re-settled in coastal big cities like Lagos. Most of the slaves now bore their masters' surnames

This is why we say Lagos is a no-man's land because the true Lagosians are not even pure Nigerians.

Lagosians are slaves that returned or escaped from Brazil, Jamaica, Benin, Togo, Liberia & co. Some of these slaves are even Igbo, Calabar, Benin, Ijaw slaves that were transported via Badagry. Their names are mostly Portuguese or English like Pedro, Rhodes, Williams, Campos, Bucknor & co.

Tinubu, Obanikoro, Sanwo-Olu and co are typical Osogbo names!!

Most of them were not and have never been slaves. Ajayi Crowther ship was captured on the sea and returned before reaching slave plantation.

English or Portuguese names were not different from Muslim names given after they have been converted to Christianity or Islam.

It was a pride to have Christian or Muslim names throughout Africa. Christians and Muslims, foolishly, still take pride in it today as first or last names.

Most Yoruba know their Yoruba family name and more important, their ORIKI. Any Lagosian without ORIKI or Yoruba names is not from Lagos.

This is a lie. Lagosians consist of aworis in Lagos island (Eko), ijebus in epe, ikorodu and other parts of the mainland. Eguns in badagry (they are not yorubas). All these people don’t have English names.

The lagosians with English names are SARO’s, returnees of the slave trade, that were taken from egbaland. They returned to seirra Leone from North and South America, and found their way back to Lagos as they did not know the egba town their fathers were taken from. They are also yorubas.

They were returnees (freed Slaves) whom British colonialists brought from Sierra Leone to Lagos to assist in the administration of Lagos as a Colony. It is based on this circumstance that Yoruba erroneously claimed to be more educated than any tribe in Nigeria. Actually, Yoruba are the least educated based on tribal nativity.

Arrant nonsense!!! He was a slave boy from Nupe ethnicity. He was already sold into slavery and parked into a ship and rescued on the high sea by anti-slavery unit of British Navy.

Lagos is not a no man's land. Original Lagos Island indigenes were Binis. However, the island is geographically closest to the Yorubas. It's history is that of migrations and cross migrations.

Most of the slave returnees can be found in port and river port cities in Nigeria. In Onitsha the Doherty, Williams, Costa, Kuti, Moore, Venn, Johnson families etc formed the ninth village called Ogbe Otu. These families were related to their name sakes in Warri and Lagos. However, the modern descendants no longer nuture the affinity.

Shut up and say what U know O. There was no time binis ever settled in Lagos island (Eko). The indigenes of Lagos island were ALWAYS aworis. The Benin monarchy had a war camp on Lagos island wt soldiers, they didn't have any indigenes there at all.
