Why?

Because they didn't just learn and understand mathematics but APPLY it in more complex way

In today's model of government, all you need to succeed as a job seeker in the banking sector or most of the public sectors at all, is GOOD ORATORY SKILL. Employers now care more about physical appearance, oratory skills especially when packaged with some unusual rhetorical approach of modelling your speech and verbal analysis.

Mathematicians are good in thinking out of the box, but their skills doesn't seems to corroborate with the reality of the day in Nigeria precisely. Those who hold the card of the Nigerian banking atmosphere are ECONOMIST, who happen to have both analytical and quantitative thinking skills; they excel in all of mathematics, statistics (probability), commerce, accounting etc.

Economists are versatile.

Name any work that doesn't involve engineers.

Omo na true o! I tried to solve an annuity cash flow question and I discovered that Excel would do the job in seconds. Just input the parameters correctly and the answer pops up.

In a normal situation why should a mathematician be a banker then a banker should be what?

We really know how to bastardized things in Nigeria

Depends on what you are doing in the bank.
In banks, you have:

Customer services
Sales and marketing
Finances
Economics department
E.t.c.

Economics department? Maybe they started this when the rest of had left the banking sector

They only make use of the calculations part but we studied the calculations part with the theories and proofs behind it cheesy

That's not a good career advice for anyone.

One of the biggest problems we are currently facing in today's world is the elevation of a particular career line or profession over others.. The result then becomes evident in the recognition and rewards that come with the much more favorite professions. Consequently, they are crowded and a deficit is created in the less favourite but equally indispensable ones..

Be very good at whatever you do!!

keep striving to improve in your chosen profession and be very passionate about it!!
I bet you'll have the world to conquer.

Programming is never a profession on its own. Don't be fooled by the noise around it..
It's just an attempt at developing a way to feed commands to a machine in a way that makes everyday tasks easier and faster to carry out.

Anyone can be a programmer. The important thing is to understand what you are programming and how the knowledge of programming would be of advantage to your profession...

The point is to have a background profession that you understand thoroughly and that you feel programming is going to help advance.

The beauty of programming is that it finds application in everything. Just everything!!

It can only take a professional mechanic to understand the issues with certain auto-electronic components and then set out to solve them using a knowledge of programming.. Someone who lacks an in depth understanding of cars would never be able to achieve that, regardless of the mastery he has gained in any machine language..

Likewise a medical doctor who has years of clinical experience behind him is in a better position to develop and deploy a software that'd be relevant in a clinical setting. You can't beat him there, however hard you try..

Even a farmer who understands agro input- output dynamics stands a better chance at putting up a tech based solution to many issues of agricultural importance..

The instances are inexhaustible but I hope you are seeing the connections..

It's just unfortunate that narrow economic perspectives largely play a role in our career decisions while we disregard passion and calling..

Shalom!!!!!

Thanks for this comment. A bank would pick a chartered Accountant/chartered banker who knows his onions over a mathematician anyday, anytime. Beyond numerical and quantitative analysis (which a good graduate of accounting, economics and finace must have), there are loads of other technicalitiies in banking beyond mathematicsandstatistics.

pocohantas:
They don’t care.
If you have a 2.1 and above from a reputable institution, below 24-26yrs, pass the entry test, interview and training sch, they will employ you.

They don’t necessarily prefer Mathematicians.
That is only on your head.

The only exception is for specialised units. Which is less than 20% of the workforce. Most are branch staff.

Science students do better in the test and training because they are good at Maths, but when the jam a business student that knows his/her onions…maybe chartered. They will know the difference between 6 and half dozen.

who derived those computational algorithms and model dynamics used in the banking sector? Who developed the hypothesis, theories and law that govern the process upon how such framework and libries used by programmers operate? One thing is to use the hammer and another is to critically develope hammering tendencies. Programming and usage of software by IT professonals is different from building an algorithm( finite solution sequence and testing the state before coding) or model for an unprecendet problem. See more abount computational mathematics. AI is a bunch of mathematical functions. why is 1 + 1 = 2? and note 3 or 4

Even if u study banking and finance,u still have to get another training to put through on how they operate in their bank, which simply means an engineer, journalist, lawyer, marketer can work in a bank

During my own time, out of 60 people selected for the bank's competitive management trainee program, 49 trainees majored in engineering, natural and applied sciences. Only 11 came from business and arts. Yours sincerely majored in mechanical engineering. I used to smash SHL then. I had many practice questions then and decoded many short cuts to solving fractions, percentages, graphical interpretation and number sequences. Mehn, time has passed!

I don't really know about engineering being preferred over mathematics in the bank but two things stood out in my journey in banking and financial services from late 1999 through 2012 and it was;
1. Those who studied (ie those who trully understood what they studied) the physical sciences e.g Maths, physics, engineering (e.g civil, mech. Elec etc) etc. passed the bank entrance examination better than others.

2. Surprisingly, those who had second class lower degrees also did better most of the time than those who presented second class lower degrees in this bank entrance examination (but please everyone should read to excel with at least a 2.1 o cos probably days are coming without it no opportunity to even sit for the exam) to the baffling minds of those in H.R dept.

It is well .

The chartered accountants are employed to be Resident Internal Controllers......
Why employ a chartered accountant to market?
The chartered accountants are employed for financial control... other than that, any one who passes the exam and is teachable can do banking BUT the truth remains that a good mathematician or anyone with good analytical skills , can work hard and is a smart worker will excel in banking..
As a mathematician who worked in banking operations, I was way ahead. I solved operations problems in my head already but WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT IN YOUR BANKING CAREER BE VERY PRAYERFUL.
I saw God go ahead of me countless times.
No teller under me defrauded the bank, no operator under me brought me tears nor pain..
It is well.
