The governor of Benue state appears to be very weak. His state has been overrun by Fulani herdsmen and he appears not to have a clue about what to do. No wonder he lost his own election for the Senate.

The dispute between Fulani and benue people goes beyond "open grazing" or anti-grazing issues, it dates back to their ancestry, they've always had that land tussle war between them, they never settled their difference ever. The emergence of modern day government has done little or nothing to salvage this disagreement.

So, you mean Ortom has not enforced the law since it was signed?

Then, all the people killed since the bill was signed will be required of him

You mean you allowed this mad men to roam freely despite their evil works ?

Quest7777:
Cow rearing is a private business that should be ranched.
Buhari, Malami & any other persons still supporting open-grazing in this modern 21st century are all evil. cool
...abi...cows should be kept, reared and fed in a particular place which is a ranch.... that is how it is done in foreign countries... Buhari and other politcians travel to abroad and see how other countries keep their cows in the ranch. but they still want cows to be moving around in nigeria and the herdsmen killing farmers and people. .. I have not seen an herdsmen arrested in this Buhari government... he is defending and supporting them because they are his brother and people

I learned that some Benue people felt Orthom was the problem even though he came crying everytime.

We shouldn't forget that Orthom got reelected not bcoz he performed but bcoz the people were angry with Buhari over the killings.

They thought Orthom would stop the killing having portray Buhari as their enemy. But Orthom did not apply wisdom. He was arresting cows, and detaining them, confiscating some, etc.

Therefore, the benue people voted against Orthom bcoz he didn't live up to expectations believing that the governor elect, a Catholic Rev Father, would be more humane and less corrupt. Don't forget that all politics are local.

Lol, they're not aware of a 6 year old law. It's these soft on crime policies that encourage criminality in the country. They should be building prisons and handing out death sentences but they're cowardly.
I think we should understand the limit of govs powers before we criticize them.
It was the last amendment signed into law last month that moved prisons to concurrent list.
Also, only the federal police have the power to prosecute. So you can arrest and hand over a suspect to the police and the police decide to let him go on whatever grounds they deem fit.
A lot of people who you see criticising Ortom are actually of the APC stock who are angry with him for daring to go against the president.
Such people will not criticize Elrufai for example, who admitted to paying killers and even rubbed it in on the victims by turning tragic events to an ethnoreligious affair.
In terms of security, I think you can hardly fault Ortom even if his performance in other areas has been below par

You're incorrect about the police just releasing them on whatever grounds they feel like. They would be held till they see a judge for bail conditions. If the police were just releasing criminals left and right Ortom would have blamed them by now on camera. The police don't prosecute the state prosecutors do the prosecuting. Those lawyers act on evidence the police supply them. If you want to absolve Ortom for his failures do so with facts.

Your point about prisons being added to the Concurrent list recently is true. Now that the state has the power he should be asking the legislature to pass strict laws on bail conditions and building prisons. What you see him doing instead is suspending enforcement. What's the logic behind doing this today if you're not trying to encourage bad behavior?

SMARTMOTORS:
From Chief Mike Ozekhome CON, SAN:

The gravamen of this discourse, is the mathematical exactitude of the requirement of 25%. The wordings of the Constitution, are quite clear and unambiguous. They demand for not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the elections in each of at least 2/3 of all the States; And the Federal Capital Territory. By a judicial mathematical analysis, 2/3 of 36 States is equal to 24 States, and in addition, the FCT, Abuja. As an example, if I request to see 24 Corpers in my law firm And Okon, it means I want to see 25 persons in all; but Okon must be one of the 25 persons. So, if 25 persons in my law firm show up, without Okon, have I had all the persons I want to see? The answer is No. To satisfy my request, Okon must show up in addition to the 24, thus, making the 25 persons I desire to see.

What the law states is that, the candidate must have 25% of votes in those States, and the FCT, Abuja. The law does not contemplate that, the candidate must win those States. The jurisprudence behind this provision, is to ensure that the President as the Numero Uno citizen of the Nation, enjoys a reasonable range of widespread acceptance by majority of the people he seeks to govern, including those inhabiting the seat of power where he would govern from .
You, Okon and Ozekhome dey smoke weed. What makes FCT superior to other 36 states?

Have you been to a police station before?
Police can decide to let go of someone if they feel there's no ground to hold him especially in matters of crime against the state.
Let me put a poser to you. How many herdsmen have you seen that appeared in court in Benue?
You think none were arrested by the state vigilante service?

I've been to the police station. The police can clearly see a herdsman a bovine following behind them. They're not letting them go because there's no evidence because there's no grounds. They're also not giving them police bail or there'd be reports on multiple herdsmen skipping bail with warrant out for their arrest. If your story is to be believed there's a paper trail to follow. The fact Ortom hasn't made these claims shows that likely isn't the case.

Its been confirmed by the state that the police are doing their jobs. The courts prosecuted the herdsmen. I'm sure vigilante are doing the part as well. If you want to call Ortom a liar go ahead.

The arrests were made in the last three years from November 1, 2017, the date of the commencement of enforcement of the law and October 31, 2020.

Represented by his Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Michael Gusa, the Governor explained that “of this number, 261 persons have been convicted, 21 persons have been discharged, 36 cases are still pending, while investigation is ongoing on other cases.
