The cultural replacement and the gradual fade of indigenous traditions in core Northern Nigerian States may be traced to the 19th Century Jihad of Usman Dan Fodio who was a Fulani Islamic teacher.

Islam is much more than a religion to its adherents. It's a way of life and regulates every aspect of its faithfuls' lives, including how they can drop a deuce or how women should dress. Islam is the most political religion and the depth of politics in Islam has usually been cited to justify islamophobia.

For instance, only your face should be left out of the hijab as a woman in moderate Islam and only your eyes should be seen from your niqab in extreme Islam. Most traditional attire of African tribes barely covers a woman's body and would therefore conflict with the mode of dressing acceptable in Islam.

Note, the jihadists invaded Northern Nigeria before the Britain established its rule over Nigeria.
