Since the evacuation of the first batch of evacuees on 24th April 2023, more groups from war-torn Sudan have been arriving in the country aboard Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) plane and the Kenya Airways.

The evacuees who comprise of different nationalities including Kenyan, Tanzania, Somalia and Burundi were received by Principal Secretary State Department of Diaspora Affairs Ms. Roseline Njogu.
The PS praised them for their resilience and encouraged other Kenyans stranded in Sudan to continue registering with the State Department for Diaspora Affairs for logistics purposes noting that the evacuation process would continue over the following days.

More than 369 Kenyans have been evacuated and airlifted to Nairobi by a team of military officials in collaboration with the Foreign Affairs officials.

This was from evacuees who made it to South Sudan border.

India thinks big on military exports to Africa, Tejas jets, Akash missiles, combat helicopters on radar
India has introduced a holistic approach to push military exports to Africa, combining pitch for weapon sales with finance, training, infra development and soft-power

India has introduced a holistic approach to push military exports to Africa, combining pitch for weapon sales with finance, training, infra development and soft-power.
The new initiative also calls for synergy between India's development efforts and strategic outreach through Line of Credit (LoC) in 42 African Union countries. India would be assisting in building IT & technical training institutes, schools, health centres, roads, railways and ports, etc., paving the way for supplying Made-in-India armaments.

India has already messaged African Union members that its locally built armaments are far superior in quality and durability compared with Chinese armaments and much cheaper than Western defence systems.

To endorse India's development and strategic outreach efforts External Affairs Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar visited Uganda and the Republic of Mozambique from April 10-15. He also made a brief stopover in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on April 13.

The visit witnessed the opening of the India-assisted National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Jinja, Uganda, the first imitative of its kind in Africa. The EAM also reviewed development projects related to railways, roads and bridge infrastructure projects and a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Mozambique.

The high-mobility military vehicles were also gifted to the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces.

Peacekeeping has been a vital element of the India-Africa partnership since 1960. Over 6,000 Indians currently serve in peacekeeping operations in African countries. India's decision to open 18 new diplomatic missions in Africa in the next few years, which will take the total number to 47, reflects its new Afro-centric approach.

To enhance defence exports and capacity-building efforts, India hosted top military commanders and service chiefs from 31 member countries of the African Union to participate in the first India-Africa Army Chiefs' Conclave on 28 March in Pune. The Ministry of Defence said: "The Conclave focussed on joint training and defence cooperation amongst the nations to evolve an institutionalised framework to enhance collaboration in the fields of joint military training, execution of peacekeeping operations; besides promoting Indian defence industries."

Additionally, the 2nd Africa-India Joint Exercise 'AFINDEX' was also held at Foreign Training Node, Aundh in Pune from March 16 to 29, 2023 with 124 participants from 25 African countries including Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Africa. On the sidelines of the exercise an 'Equipment Display' was organised in which 75 indigenous defence products from 32 domestic companies were showcased.

Currently, several African Union member countries regularly buy 'Made in India' armaments. The main buyers are Botswana, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, Somalia, and South Africa. In some cases, India has even gifted armaments and military equipment to Mauritius and Seychelles.

Several defence public undertakings regularly export defence equipment to Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Kenya, Libya, Malawi, Mauritius, Myanmar, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Surinam, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The government has also nominated a few Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) as export promotion agencies for selected African Union member countries to promote defence exports. "Subject to strategic considerations, domestically manufactured defence products will be promoted through Government-to-Government agreements and Lines of Credit/Funding," MoD adds.

India is offering its key home-built weapons and platforms including Tejas fighters, light combat & utility helicopters, Akash missile batteries, artillery guns, Pinaka rockets launchers, besides, armoured vehicles, mobility vehicles, drones, loitering munitions, small arms, offshore patrol vessels, interceptor crafts, communication and surveillance equipment, etc for export to key African Union member allies.

India has set an armaments exports target of $5 billion by 2025 to achieve self-reliance in developing and building weapons & platforms. While India achieved $1.75 billion in defence exports in 2022 and is targeting $2.37 billion in 2023. The majority of armament exports will be executed by private defence companies.

One of the key MEA policy initiatives is to engage India Exim Bank to extend soft Lines of Credit (LoC) to Mauritius, Mozambique and Seychelles for the export of India-built weapons & platforms. The Exim Bank branches spread across Africa are exploring facilitating need-based LoC for the export of aerospace, defence, and maritime equipment with other African countries as well. India plans to export armaments and provide medical training to the armies of Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Lesotho, Morocco, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Interestingly, Nigeria will be the first country to buy unspecified numbers of indigenously built Light Combat Helicopters from state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd through soft credit. Six officers from the Nigerian Army have already completed training on Chetak and Dhruv light helicopters at HAL's Rotary Wing Academy in Bangalore.

Besides promoting defence exports, India is also focusing on capability building in agriculture and agro-processing, health and pharmaceuticals and disaster management and disaster management.

Indian private companies mainly work in Africa under the Indian LoC projects through the Exim Bank of India. However, very few private companies want to invest their own money in Africa and instead, they want to pursue projects through grants only. For Indian private companies, Africa has not fully emerged as a favourable destination.

Air Vice Marshal Lubo, please allow me to stand on existing protocol, and thank you so much for having us here today.

Also, welcome and thank you to our distinguished guests from the U.S. Air Force and Army Corps of Engineers who have made the trip.

I would be remiss not to recognize an individual who is not here today: Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard, who departed Nigeria one month ago and entered retirement after 38 years of service to the U.S. government, including three Ambassadorships. Nobody did more than she in recent years to strengthen this relationship, and to support a stronger military-to-military partnership.

Good morning, everyone. It is an honor to represent the United States here in Kainji on such a significant occasion.

Well before my arrival in Nigeria last year, I was hearing about the A-29s. I have closely tracked the progress of the A-29 program because of what it represents in this new era of U.S.–Nigeria security partnership. Today, I am delighted to celebrate the fruits of that partnership and commitment. Nigeria’s A-29 program addresses critical Nigerian needs, is the largest U.S. foreign military sale in history to any country in sub-Saharan Africa, and is truly an example of Nigeria’s leadership and professionalism as reflected in the Air Force motto, “Willing – Able – Ready.”

A key enabler for the effective employment of the A-29s is the construction here at Kainji, which meets U.S. standards for munitions storage, safety, security, and quality. Without a proper and modern runway, hangar, training facility, or storage area, the A-29s would be grounded; with this construction, it can truly take flight. And we have already seen just how important this program is. The Nigerian Air Force has used the A-29s to great effect in the fight against terrorists, and the use of the latest targeting technologies and precision weapons minimizes civilian casualties. Just last October, the NAF demonstrated the effectiveness of the A-29s when the Nigerian military successfully repelled a terrorist attack on nearby Wawa Cantonment, just a few miles down the road.

The A-29s are a critical piece off the puzzle in Nigeria’s fight against insecurity and extremism but it’s not just about the machines or the facilities, it’s the people in and behind them.

Proper maintenance and ground support are critical to keeping the A-29s in the fight, and the A-29 Program Management Office at Nigerian Air Force Headquarters is a large part of that success. The Program Management Office is an internationally recognized best practice to support long-term sustainment, and we’re proud that the A-29 is the first NAF airframe with this support mechanism. I look forward to seeing U.S.-Nigerian collaboration lead to additional advancements through projects like the A-29.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Air-To-Ground Integration program or AGI. Six courses of students from all three military services have graduated from the program, and we look forward to working with the NAF to develop the AGI Schoolhouse. These programs deepen the U.S.-Nigerian partnership and help the Nigerian military become not just the premier fighting force in Africa, but a stabilizing force in the region.

We are cutting the ribbon at three different sites here in Kainji today, which is pretty impressive, but this is far from the end of the U.S. work at the base. We remain willing, able, and ready to support the A-29 equipment and construction warranties and to discuss requests for additional equipment. As the U.S. Air Force says, let’s “aim high” for the next iteration with the AH-1Z. Thank you.

So, when "Africa Intelligence" - French intelligence masquerading as journalism/analysis - isn't talking up their Rwandan puppets in Moz by dumping on SAMIM, they're covering their puppets' pillaging of the DRC by excreting on the EAC regional force.

If this is confirmed to be true, then there is something else other than getting the best equipment that is driving the military acquisition plan. Because I don’t understand this scattered purchase the military is embarking on.

A few months since the EAC deployment and failure is proclaimed? Bunkum.
Take a look at a map and take in the size of eastern DRC. Plus the fact you have over 40 different armed groups there; most of whom are civilians by day and pillaging marauders by night. Coupled with some working with and for the DRC govt, and therefore can't be disarmed by external actors like the EAC or Monusco.
Then there's Rwanda, sponsoring M23 whilst a member of the EAC. Chadian and Central African Republic rebels have also been known to raid whenever the whim takes them.

The problems in the Kivus are complex and require a DRC govt with complete impartiality with no favourites. Anybody expecting quick resolution is naive at best and dissembling at worst.

Should the EAC not report its successes somewhere because there are attacks elsewhere?
This article is superficial BS by a parachuted journo driven more by an agenda, than enlightening his readers.
