TheSuperNerd: Why? Petit was so good in that finals that even John Fashanu picked him out for the role he was playing for France in that game. Without those headers, I doubt Zidane would have been rated over Petit. |

TheSuperNerd: Let me refresh you on the genesis of this debate. I was asked who was better, Zidane or De Bruyne. My reply was, They play different things and can't be compared. So, I already understand they interpret the creative midfield role differently. I was later asked to make a choice and pick who was better. I must pick one, neglecting the distinction in their plays. I picked De Bruyne, due to his effectiveness. They interpret the game differently but we can't deny how effective De Bruyne's approach over the years is. His a master of finding areas of the pitch and shape of opposition to cause damage. His work rate to keep the opposing team uncomfortable and the way he scans the pitch to find places in lethal positions is top notch. This does not take away how unbelievable Zidane was. He was a genius with respect to his time. Ancelotti said coaching Zidane improved him (Ancelotti) as a coach. I know Zidane's brilliance is on an insane level. However, De Bruyne's interpretation is more clinical. As Icon4s puts it, put the greats in the modern game today and see them at pro-max level. I agree. Imagine Zidane working under Guardiola as a player. Bananas. Unfortunately, KDB is lucky to work with him and he has created a clinical interpretation of the Creative midfield play. Finito. |

To be honest, the whole French team got praise. But looking specifically at who was truly influential for France at that WC, Zidane deserves his spot over Petit but not over Desailly and Thuram. Zidane wasn't all about those two Headers in the final vs Brazil. In the game vs SA, he provided the assist from a corner for Dugarry's opener. Against Saudi Arabia, Zidane executed a turn so immaculate to escape the close press of Saudi opposition and flicked a pass out to Bixente Lizarazu who went on to tee up Thierry Henry's Opener. View it here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdHAIgeRXoE Zidane definitely had a better France 98 than Petit. That's the point. TheGoodJoe: |

I get your angle perfectly. In a nutshell though, KDB's interpretation of the role has seen him evolve into the Most Elite Chances Creator of his era among midfielders but Zidane remains that guy who oozes elite control and command as the All-time Dictator midfielder of not just his era but any era (arguably). Zidane vs England. Euros 2004. England led that game till the 91st minute until Zidane happened. I need us to relive that 2-3mins of last minutes madness at Euro 2004. France vs England's Golden Generation midfield of Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and even David Beckham. KDB is an elite super efficient midfield creator. But Zidane was a force of nature in the middle. He was a god of Midfield dynamics. He controlled the outcome of most games with his own game. TheGoodJoe: |

TheSuperNerd: But was red carded and missed a large chunk of the world cup triumph. Such a player can't be crowned best player of the team. Unfortunately, we don't have Petit and Djorkaeff's tapes. If we did, you will understand how impactful these guys were and they played most of the tournament. Same with Lizarazu. |

typicalgamer: Working with Guardiola would have seen him carve a niche on the attacking line to become more efficient. A more tactically sound Nacho would have been a deadlier Nacho. |

Football is fast moving from natural fullbacks to intelligent and tactically sound inverted fullbacks. Fullbacks who can contribute to middle game plays. Elite teams are using such profiles often now so yes, Ferland's natural fullbacks profile is at risk at elite clubs unless they can adapt tactically. typicalgamer: |

It's always a Joy to watch Vinicius Jr play football. Rainbow flick in a UCL semis game. The game needs ballers like this in the biggest stage always.
