Security Council declares phone snatching act of armed robbery in Kano

Kano state Security Council has declared phone snatching as an armed robbery and any individual or group caught in the act will be treated as such.

The outgoing commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Muhammad Garba disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen in Kano.

He said the council, which was presided over by the outgoing Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje during it's valedictory session, noted that perpetration of the act in recent times has reached a worrisome proportion and therefore needs drastic measures.

Malam Garba also stated that the council has agreed to put in place a special squad within the security system to deal with the menace and other acts of criminality in the state.

The commissioner added that the council while deliberating on the swearing in of the new governor said that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure peaceful ceremonies and warned that miscreants who might use the occasion to cause violence in the name of celebrations to refrain from such act.

"Destruction of properties belonging to the public, individual or the opposition will not be tolerated as adequate measures have been taken to deal with such act decisively," the statement added.

He said during the meeting, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje reiterated the need for a smooth transition of power in the state, and called for a peaceful ceremony. He thank the security agencies in the state for all the cooperation extended to him throughout his tenure and urged them to maintain the tempo.

The meeting was attended by virtually all the heads of the security agencies and other members of the council.

It is very terrible now in Kano and Kaduna states and if you don't leave your phone, they are ready to kill you with the weapon. What surprised me most is that nobody will intervene whenever they want to snatch your phone and you drag it with them.

I remembered last year when I entered keke marwa in Kwana dawaki to Kano city and I did not know that I have entered one chance, the guy said he was not going again and that I should come down when I got down I notice my phone was not with me again, I used my leg like to run after the keke, I caught him with others on the speed, the way they saw me, they were afraid, immediately, they gave me my phone.

Kano State is like Lagos State, if you don't be careful, your phone will not follow you to the house

If the robber is not "armed" with a weapon it can not be considered as armed robbery in the eyes of the law no matter what ganduje says. It's just robbery simpliciter

It can only be armed robbery only if arms and ammunitions are involved.
It's a simple English.
Not only phone, including motorcycle, keke, cars etc. Anything at all that involves arms is armed robbery but if no arms were used then it is robbery.

Armed robbery is technically different from stealing (petty theft). It usually carries hefty penalties. It involves stealing with the use of weapons capable of causing bodily harm or even death. Phone snatching in many cases does not involve use of weapons, in many of those cases, it involves a snatch and run. But the menace is much which is why I believe they chose to make the punishment serious.

I don’t believe they are actually going to term it as armed robbery. But they intend for it to carry the same consequences.

This law is apt because over here in the North people are stabbed to death because of phone worth N20k and some idiots on Nairaland castigate a certain tribe as not good in politics of sentiments as if Buhari has improved lives here because they refuse to travel around the country and see for themselves the kind of poverty ravaging our country.

it's like English is disturbing this people

for a robbery (irrespective of what is stolen) to be termed 'armed robbery' the attacker must be armed with dangerous weapon e.g gun, knife etc even if an attacker fully rob a bank but without any weapon it is not armed robbery, it's simply robbery
