The church approach was wrong. Jesus do not chase away sinners. However....
You can understand how the Bible address your dressing in two points;
1- The Bible when you understand it and especially too when you consider why Moses was mistaken for an Egyptian by the midianites that met him when he ran away from Israel you will know that God want you to present yourself in conduct and costume in a way that people will not identify you with the people of the world with some reputation of some vices.

Jesus drove those that were doing business inside the Temple out, how does it relate to this? Show me another set of people He sent out?

I dont think it is just bout the way you were treated. A ban on earrings is what one can call " the ringfencing of God's commandments"

The pharisees ring fenced God's commandments with hundreds of doctrinal rules. Many churches are today's pharisees. The objective of ring fencing is to prevent sin by creating many hurdles around a command so that at least one of them will catch you before you travel too far.
