FG is subsidizing by running the universities with government money while we paid few thousands as school fees.

For the purpose of argument u may not want to agree, but almost everyone knows that the "education" obtained from Private owned institutions where millions are paid yearly and one obtained from a tertiary institution affords u both opportunity to work in the same industry and function well on the job.

Yes public tertiary education has it's attendant problem like some lecturers missing lectures, some lecturers' teaching styles are archaic , etc. But as far as what u called "quality education" is concerned, both private and public varsities have what it takes to deliver . Most of the professors working in private universities were even poached from public varsities.

Except what u call "university experience" is just the ambiance, fine classrooms and hostels, beautiful buildings etc.

I am going to hard disagree.

Unless you are a particularly bright student or one whose parents have exposed you or maybe you are self motivated, you will enter labor force at a disadvantage.

I am doing my own thing now and working with public uni grads. The difference between them and the private uni grads ehn. Incoherent poorly put together power point reports. You go correct tire. One 28 year old dude came to my place for autocad training. Meanwhile 19 year olds in covenant are being taught with revit. People everywhere want guys who can hit the ground running. Maybe things have changed now. Do people actually learn REAL coding in public unis today ? When I was in school it was Fortran and pascal and algorithm on paper.

I think u have been unfortunate to have met the worse of the worse. I've worked in a private university settings before and I met some extremely dull students just like we had dull students in every set while I was in school.

There are a lot of factors responsible for students being dull. The school the person attended is just a very tiny fraction of the factors responsible for a graduate performing on the job.

And yes, things are a bit better in public universities now; unlike what u had in ur time. By 300L we were already writing seminar papers, doing presentations, etc which were preparing us for the outside world.

The problem is most people in the university assume university is a place like secondary school where u will be spoon-fed all through ur stay. Instead u are expected to carry out research and do learning on ur own for most parts

If a country such as the US, with a real unemployment rate of around 7%, still has millions of borrowers struggling to pay back their student loans, I shudder to imagine what the default rate would be for the Nigerian student loan..

In as much as Tinubu meant well by signing the student loan bill into law, the Education Bank should also be tasked with making grants available to indigent students as well, which would potentially reduce the rate of default.

I would say Nigerians pay alot of taxes in comparison to the value received from the ruling class.

Chief I have lived in both North America and Europe including the UK, and like you I hate taxes but I pay and still complain, but overall I know and see they effect of my taxes on society even some I dont agree with.

The above you listed are direct known taxes, Naija own na tax by stealth, and by god they are many... abeg whats your UK equivalent of Cof O? Or Omo Onile?

Chief we are all know the outcome of this journey? Increase in tuition and more debt on the student (poor) it is not worth being celebrated.

Its like am the only one against this - na pure capitalist una be.
The UK and US student are clamouring for reprieve, my daughter and her fellow students voted overwhelming for labour due to their promise to remove University tuition. When tuition was introduced its started like £1k now its closer to £9,000.

I'm saying one thing, you're saying another.

1.You asked what the Government does with taxes paid

2. I retorted by asking you how much Nigerians pay in income tax

And then you started talking about omonile.

Before you start to ask questions about standard of living in other countries, you first have to ask about how much the Government has to even spend in the first place.

That's why I gave the example of the UK where there is NI tax at up to 12% of your income, PAYE tax at up to 45% of your income, Council tax paid on the value of your house, Road Tax for your car, you can't even watch TV in your house without paying tax in the form of annual TV licence.

Infrastructure will not build itself. You cannot expect FG to subsidise cost of living in every sector whilst expecting taxation levels to stay low...and that's not even accounting for corruption.

This is what has to be done. Not cutting the cost of any stüpid governance that in the grand scheme of things is really a small portion of FG expenditure.

You think Unilag, UI and others won't charge a higher premium than the most expensive private Uni? Make we dey watch...

Unilag cannot charge the same fee as Babcock or Covenant. Even though they are going to have autonomy to determine their fees, they are still public schools.

I wouldn't say a very tiny fraction.

There's a difference between an Oko Polytechnic graduate, a FUNAAB graduate, a UNILAG graduate and a Covenant Uni graduate.

The quality of foundational education given to folks in these institutions vary.

Someone who studied in Oko or FUNAAB will really need to work extra hard to be on par with their UNILAG and CU counter parts.

And I don't mean just book knowledge. Being articulate enough to sell yourself, emotionally mature enough to ask questions when stuck and versatile enough to not stutter when you're asked about the latest trends in your career...

They can charge as much or even more. The market forces will determine how many students apply to Unilag vs Babcock

If unilag is perceived inferior in quality to Babcock while charging higher fees then student will move

Also I don't expect Fuoye being in the interior to charge as much as Unilag because of the economy of ekiti vs Lagos

My theory from when I was young was that the exposure and competition between students matter more than what lecturers taught them

All those Ife tech startup tech guys won't tell you they learnt react or angular JS from their lecturer who doesn't even know it. They probably heard their colleagues mention it challenging themselves and followed

Same way in secondary school in our time when half of the year was spent on teacher strikes and most of your school teachers were PTA or long distance degree holders. Your best bet was to have one hot Uni student or corper teaching you up to standard

How many secondary school teachers really understood further math enough to teach UME ready student?

We used to mock teachers because we have studied ahead of class and knew more than the teacher. Those waiting for teacher to teach syllabus usually fail jamb and write waec multiple times while those who got outside lesson where young guys Uni student on ASUU strike, corper taught them passed easily

The issue with public university is that nowadays due to incessant strikes many middle class families will rather send their kids abroad or to private school while only the poor and incurable optimists will go to public Uni. How many people here will have money for Covenant and send the child to Ife?

In our time there were no private Uni so ministers rich men etc all had no option beside OAU UI Unilag Abu it's not uncommon for a son of a farmer or teacher to be in the same class with Fayose or Commisioner son

Nowadays it's getting rare. It's these same reason that's making public secondary school worse. The quality of Queens college Kings college Loyola college FGC are worse because the demography that should be going to these schools are now going to Greensprings, Grange Lekki British school

In my personal opinion, what matters most is ur secondary school/high school education. That is the best foundation u can get; the university is not the place where u are seeking foundational education.

There is no difference between intelligent UNILAG students and Covenant University students. I've seen this play out in my personal space over and over again. U may not agree with me, but If u put an intelligent CU graduate and UNILAG graduate on the same role they will both perform well.

I totally agree.
I mean, if your peers in class are doing stuff you can't... you'd mostly level up.

Unlike when most of your classmates are just winging it, bribing lecturers to pass and gyrating every other weekend.

No. What I meant by foundational education isn't the 1+1 in pre college.

I meant for instance, someone studying comp sci who actually opens visual studio to code in class...no matter what the lecturer ends up teaching or not teaching...will most likely end up faring better than the regular student who writes obsolete code on paper, uses runs to pass the course of one "wicked lecturer" and gets his first laptop during NYSC.

And yes. UNILAG and CU can compete.

But what of CU and DELSU?
Or UNILAG and Fed Poly Ilaro?

Averagely speaking...

But the average student - the better the school the better the opportunity. The lower cadre schools right now actually aid in exam malpractice. Fucking the kids up from the start

In my time there were some courses with almost 1000 student and lecturer in front where only 200 can only hear him talking to himself. If that's what you are banking on to pass you are OYO. Any serious student will carry your Halliday Terajah FrankWood, Stroud, Kreyzig and pieces it on your own

Or face Wyse or Synergy to upskill yourself in ICAN or ACCA or NIIT new horizon for IT training

In my secondary school between MKO riots, teachers strikes there were some years we didn't learn for more than 4months in an entire year. How many subjects that we didn't even have teachers for

If you think na that go make you pass Jamb you are Oyo

You are one conflating the issues...
Nigerians pay tax, and I opined that they pay alot more in relation to what they get back from the ruling class.

The 45% Tax you listed paid in the UK gets you good health care and good roads and education system, whereas a banker in Nigeria earning 12M per annum will pay still pay tax maybe 20% but will spend probably easily spend another 30% of their income on school fees and healthcare for their family.

Also majority of taxes is being paid by the Top 10%; and only 56% of the UK populations pay tax.. as you are afforded £12600 tax free income, such measures means majority of lower income are excluded, and what about all the social protections offered by their govt?

I still insist that we should focus on removing the inefficiencies by cutting out waste and corruption, and we would amazed what we can achieve... I believe you are aware that we wasted N85bn on Nigerian Airways - like $100Million is nothing is scheme of thing? Not even considering how many more of these exist...
