The student loan is a sinister by FG to introduce tuition in universities.
You need to understand no Nigeria university owned by FG currently pays tuition fee. My guess is that they will introduce tuition fees and make it difficult for students from poor home to get education because going to the university will become expensive.

See the way they are rubbishing the initiative. The loan is not meant for everybody. They are sometime one will find it difficult to pay tuition fee,you can always go for loan not that one will use loan to run a course of 4 to 6years.

Well Sowore, at least it's a right step in the right direction. I think it only needs perfection. Student loan is optional. If you know you're studying a nonsense course I don't think it's wise to take it. If you are not sure of a job, it's not wise to take it also.

There's already a thread that FG will reintroduce tuition in the guise that if you can't afford it, take a loan. Guess what, since we lack structural reforms (based on corruption) the POOR can't access the loans. How many senior civil servants will stand as surety for someone whose parents earn below minimum wage (whom the loan was made for). More so, compare the qualified workforce (senior officers) with the undergraduate population in Nigeria. As usual, we sugarcoat policies without understanding the feasibility in a corrupt society like Nigeria.

The major problem in this country is that we fail to think outside the box

The truth is, before they are thinking of loan, be rest assured that the fees will go so high. The loan is so that you won't have any excuse when they increase the fees. It will be shocking to see that is for fees of 50k and 80k that they are signing students loan for.

It is a good idea

When parents take loans from the banks they have to have collateral to back the loan. Parents take loans according to their means... they cut their clothes according to their cloth.
How many will now want to take loans to go to Covenant University?... or bite more than they can chew? This is how many will walk into this trap and later on be bawling to get out. How will they build a life when trapped in deep debt? The poorest are indeed the ones that will be hit the hardest.

Nigerian SUG government that is dancing with government should be impeached with immediate effect. How would somebody elected, not selected by government would sit down and eating and drinking with government that want to take education out of the reach of common man. Sowore is correct on this, and thank God he is not among the tribalistic people who are support the government blindly because of tribal sentiment. If Awolowo had not make education free in south west during his time, and Bola Ige and other governors in south west during their reign had not follow suit, many southwesterners would not have been educated today, and these are the people that claimed they are following Awolowo legacy. Those student that collect bribe to support this wicked policy will soon finish the money and their eyes will be opened. Because some people in this country felt that they can bribe their away to get away with whatever they want. This remind me of the prophecy of Adesina, that people will appreciate Buhari when he leases office, which has definitely come to pass in short distance, from day one of new administration masses had been subjected to untold hardship.

I like to calm down and understand policy implications before supporting the government.

Every government university in Nigeria is tuition free as at today. If government introduces a tuition loan don't you think they are about to start charging tuition fees? Federal university fees are about to go through the roof. Even the students celebrating this few days ago do not understand the implication.

The coming months will be interesting between students, ASUU and government.

It's been one harsh policy after the other in quick succession. Now with the naira devaluation NNPC will review the already high pump price of petrol. Have you thought of the cumulative impact of all these policies being rolled out?
