You think importing food for consumption is good for our economy?
A country of over 200,000,000 people importing rice despite having land and manpower to grow our own food.
Spending forex to import what we can grow is one of the reasons our currency is devalued.
Since they closed the border what have we achieved? Is the naira strengthened now? How much is rice? Please let the poor Breath

The expected slight loss in value to the Cefa would likely be more bearable when compared to the benefits from reduced food prices.

Nigeria economics typically deviates from traditional economic theories, for example how do you explain how locally produced rice became significantly costlier after border closure when the theoretical idea was to improve local production and lower prices.
"Slight loss" you wrote? You must be kidding me.

Locally rice will become expensive till we increase our capacities to farm rice more. When the existing rice farmers are making profits, more people will be encouraged to go into rice farming.

Don't kill this country call Nigeria with this policy somersault of yours!

Importation was going on well and naira to dollar was trading at 190 to a dollar.. Suffer was not much then how do you explain the effect that led to the currency being dropped to 750..

Just say Buhari and his economy management team were absolute disaster..

Where is your rice pyramid or how many commercial company were they able to build in eight years..

You closed your borders not to buy rice but you want to sell to others and you expect them to import and destroy their economy.. You try

For the past eight years how many rice have you grown?
This is a very silly question.
Firstly the ban on rice importation is not up to 8yrs.

More importantly, even though there is still much more to be done,Nigeria became the largest producer of rice in Africa, during the period of the ban.

Rubbish

What have they been able to do with the forex since the closure of the border ?

The price of locally made rice is cost more than the foreign rice instead of being cheaper .

Abeg, they should open the border so that the price of rice will drop and Nigerians will have choices .
Well said

So you agree that import destroys their economy but celebrate destruction of our own economy?

How can you open border for importation of rice that you have a great comparative advantage to grow locally ?

The rice you're buying very expensive is still foreign smuggled rice. Would you rather prefer smuggled to legally imported and cheaper rice? The ban does not prevent influx of foreign rice, it only makes it expensive as smuggling is risky.

Use your brain, and don't read textbooks by Nigerian authors alone.

The government should be creative and improvise other means of promoting locally produced rice. When cheaper locally produced rice are available, nobody will buy foreign rice again.

I don't agree with you.

What about Keke that we import daily in thousands. What about so many items that we import. Even tooth picks, cooking pot, stoves.

The simple truth is that Nigeria is not a producing country.

Even in agriculture, we are far behind. We do not have mechanized farming yet. Peasant farmers can't meet the need of millions of Nigerians. This is why foreign rice is far cheaper outside our border.

The rice production is only making rice farmers rich. It adds no value to the income generated by the government.

It is deeper than you think. US will get away with a lot of things that no other countries can get away with.

Dollar is the world's reserve currency and there will always be a demand for dollars globally which will always strengthen the USD. Also, US can do quantitative easing (printing of more dollars) and still get away with it due to the same reason.

We need to increase the QUALITY of our education in Nigeria. Once we have people that are TRULY educated, Govt will find it easy to implement good policies because the citizens will understand.,

Because brand new cars are outrageously expensive so we'd rely on tokunbo cars na
The exchange rate is already too high.... To forestall smuggling, they should also reduce the import tariff of vehicles

We need to make sacrifices to boost our local output, our country needs every money we can generate. What we need is a bridge between the millers and the consumers directly. Believe me Nigerian rice is cheap it's the same factor that affects transportation in December even though there is no scarcity that is the same factor that is affecting rice. Just a bunch of greedy ass people that don't give a Bleep about anyone else but themselves. They have set up a mafia type control over the supply chain. Even the current foreign rice is just rebagged Nigerian rice.(fact) We the people are our own problem

And poultry with low tariff. It will not only yield the government billions of Naira in revenue, but bring a big reduction in the price of meat. Nigerians are starving. This is the best palliative ever.

You cannot compare a Certified Accountant with a useless Army General who couldn’t even secure the nation
For your information, the time of your so called useless general seems to be preferred to your so called fake certificate holder accountant, from day one of the accountant reign, life of Nigerians masses have become miserable, prices of essential commodities gone up, we cant travel easily again because of outrageous transport cost, increase in tuitions for our children, while they increase their own salary by more than 100%. Now with all these evidence who is a useless person and senseless in governance.

Nigeria has no comparative advantage in rice production. The British colonialist tried to encourage our farmers but they weren't keen.

Let the nation focus on what it has comparative advantage in.

Sheabutter alone can yield $2bn a year in exports if fully developed.

price of tokumbo doubled last year. hopefully this would bring it back to affordable level.
The problem is still the exchange rate.
The price of cars in Benin Republic are still the same since early 2000s to date.
