If they do that, expect exchange rates to reach over 1000 naira. It will nose dive.
Importer will use our dollars to import rice to seme border and smuggle it in. Who loose?. Fg should as a matter of fact declare state of emergency on agriculture. So that even if they will open border, it will not be attractive much to the citizens. May be by forcing the producers to site their mega factories in nigeria if need be with incentives.
Though which ever way it goes, Nigeria is in for a long rough ride. They have looted all the money finish. Borrowed and looted them again for the generation unborn to be paying.
All of them from LP, PDP , APC participated in this mess we found our self.
Madam NOI has predicted the current situation long time ago during Jonathan. Unfortunately, we easily forget the past in this country.

Stop babbling. Nigeria should be exporting food outside the country. Why should imported rice be cheaper than what we grow in Nigeria?

Carry your failed economics go dump that garbage in the ocean. Lazy youths. During our youthful days we farm from 7 am to 5 pm with crude farm implements but nowadays, Na guy man dey hungry una.

You think importing food for consumption is good for our economy?
A country of over 200,000,000 people importing rice despite having land and manpower to grow our own food.
Spending forex to import what we can grow is one of the reasons our currency is devalued.

American and other are importing, rice, crude and so many consumeble commodities,

All that matters is for us to buy it at a cheaper rate, thats all

There is no need for rice, Labana rice, Eko rice and co are here, we can't progress when we can't produce, so Local content should be encouraged. The only condition for importation should be to cushion the market demand of products we don't produce locally.

You need to know the reason why the West is doing that, we need development therefore they are not a direct comparison. All the world is spending their dollar even for continental trade, so why?

Nigeria has no comparative advantage in rice production. The British colonialist tried to encourage our farmers but they weren't keen.

Let the nation focus on what it has comparative advantage in.

Sheabutter alone can yield $2bn a year in exports if fully developed.

I just wonder why people like you just write without knowledge.

Nigeria is now the largest producer of rice in Africa.

What comparative advantage are you then referring to?

We need to make sacrifices to boost our local output, our country needs every money we can generate. What we need is a bridge between the millers and the consumers directly. Believe me Nigerian rice is cheap it's the same factor that affects transportation in December even though there is no scarcity that is the same factor that is affecting rice. Just a bunch of greedy ass people that don't give a Bleep about anyone else but themselves. They have set up a mafia type control over the supply chain. Even the current foreign rice is just rebagged Nigerian rice.(fact) We the people are our own problem

I always pity those of you that are asking the poor Nigerians to make sacrifice for Nigeria. I would have like you to direct your appeal to our so called leaders, what sacrifice have they made? Is it the huge salaries and allowances or outrageous contract inflated prices? In the olden days all government officials are using the same official vehicle Peugeot (PAN) from Kaduna, today, how many of them from president to State governors are using innoson Motor or eating local rice in their respective government houses. It is masses that should make sacrifice, while they continue to live in affluent? If leaders cannot lead by example, I think there is no need for masses to make any sacrifice, after all, leaders are not super human, they are like me and you. They only have privilege of being a leader.

People in developed countries mostly rely on used cars too. New cars are expensive everywhere in the world.

Aslong as the vehicles being imported via the borders are made to pay the Nigerian custom duties and taxes, nothing wrong with importing them from a neighbouring country.

Prices of cars will definitely fall as there will be more competition amongst sellers.
Na lie.
tax, duties and bribe at the entry point will make the vehicles expensive after crossing.

That is somewhat true, but people aboard also buy new cars via installment-paying systems (it exists on a limited basis in Nigeria).

your post it s the more reason the ban on rice should be lifted. Let the bunch of greedy ass people compete with their expensive rice against N8000 bag of rice imported legally

Being the largest producer does not mean you have comparative advantage

Let the government lift the ban on rice importation and replace it with low import duty, and our locally produced rice can't compete and production will plummet

Nigeria has only achieved the status as the largest rice producer in Africa by restricting imports through high import duty and other protective barriers. Left to an open market, our rice can't compete

The rice you're buying very expensive is still foreign smuggled rice. Would you rather prefer smuggled to legally imported and cheaper rice? The ban does not prevent influx of foreign rice, it only makes it expensive as smuggling is risky.

Use your brain, and don't read textbooks by Nigerian authors alone.

The government should be creative and improvise other means of promoting locally produced rice. When cheaper locally produced rice are available, nobody will buy foreign rice again.

You're actually wrong.
What the marketers did was to rebag Nigerian rice using foreign bags since you guys are so obsessed with foreign rice.

They sell Nigerian rice to you in foreign bags at exorbitant price.

They have 2 sets of the same rice in stock and sell one higher than the other just by tagging it 'foreign rice'

When you cook both rice, that's when the truth gets exposed.

You wouldn't know if you don't cook or very observant.

Expensive does not remove the fact that Nigeria is the largest producer of rice in Africa.

That foreign rice is cheaper than local rice ,other than Ofada,is a big lie.

Ofada is more expensive because of its limited production.

Calm down
Every country has its specialization and in a perfectly competitive market let the local and imported businesses drag the market together.
Our Rice farmers here really messed up things, how can locally grown rice be #38k whereas the Foreign ones I believe will cost #20k.
