In 2004, before you owe a license to operate a bank, you must have 25billion naira ($250m as at then ) Worth of asset

Now, that 25b naira with the current dollar rate is worth less than $33m as at now.

Meaning that your money in the bank is at risk, so there's need for those Banks to raise their assets to about 100b naira so as to protect their customers.

The only solution is Merging of Banks

The recent devaluation of the Nigerian naira against the US dollar has raised concerns about the need to increase the capital base of Nigerian commercial banks. Analysts argue that the 2004 banking industry recapitalization, which raised banks' capital from N2 billion to N25 billion, has weakened due to the devaluation. The current exchange rate has significantly reduced the capital base of banks when converted to dollars. The Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of the banking system stood at 12.8% as of April 2023, indicating a relatively stable banking system. However, experts suggest that recapitalization may be necessary to strengthen the banking industry and financial institutions due to the significant depreciation of the naira. They predict potential recapitalization amounts, such as N100 billion, which could lead to mergers and acquisitions and possibly job losses in Tier 2 and 3 banks. Some banks have already been engaged in capital-raising exercises through bonds and rights issues. However, there are differing opinions on whether regulatory-induced recapitalization should be implemented, with some advocating for market-driven recapitalization through mergers, acquisitions, or stock market participation. The incoming Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor is expected to play a significant role in determining the approach to recapitalization. Overall, the sector's stability and ability to support economic growth will be crucial factors in the decision-making process.

Abeg an analyst should summarize it for us
Not an analyst, but i think they're saying the minimum networth of Deposit Money Banks should be reviewed upwards.

It is currently #25bn (since 2004).

Top analysts are predicting an increase to #100bn. Some Tier 2 and 3 banks may have to merge with bigger banks to survive. Jobs will be lost in the process

This recapitalization is needed to ensure that banks have the capacity to survive in these modern economy. And so on and so forth.

There was a time Ghana wanted to recapitalize for FAR LESS and guess who showed up as investors? NIGERIANS. Out of fear that Nigerians shouldn't come to dominate their banking sector, only very few with Ghanaians as major partners were placed under consideration.

We are good in banking, financial apps and export them to London and African countries etc.... Many of the countries around us, don't even have such capital base and many have these small, cooperative banks but because of integrity, transparency etc investors and client's confidence in the banking sector is assured.

Someone will complain of missing funds in his account and you will see so much bottlenecks even when the thief is known and can be traced by his bank. His bank will still need Police and court papers b4 they release your money right under their nose.... How can diaspora Nigerians fully trust our system with this lack of will power to attack this evil and reduce cybercrime?

Anyway, so many banks now in Nigeria: Commercial, Microfinance, Mobile money and each will have it's acceptable capital base..... But this shouldn't be a hurried decision.

Why didn't China accept to devalue the Yuan? And why is Vietnam, even with a devalued currency battling to remain relevant despite all odds?

Naira is not devaluated. Naira is floated to compete with FX at the market! If you want to make Naira strong pls do not import anything. Patronize made in Nigeria. Desist from doing nonsense on the social media and think about what you can do to start a company. All your quests for dollars, Euro, Pounds to settle school fees in the UK, US and Europe contribute to the fall of Naira. How can the Federal Government continue to defend the Naira by pegging it for you to be favoured so u can import products that will kill the economy? Pls, export more and import less! Once the Federal Government fixes insecurity, our farmers will produce more and there will be raw materials to feed the industries and to export. Youth, wake up! You can generate light and be selling to ur communities! You can do legit businesses that can fetch you money! This is the time!
