I read that back in the day, Nigeria was one of the world's biggest exporter of Cocoa, groundnuts, kolanut, bitter kola, etc.
Those were what made the Nigerian economy a very stable one, according to history.

So, what happened?
At what point did we get it wrong?
What can we do to make things right?

I believe if Nigeria will be better again, it will be majorly through agricultural exports.

Simple...Mechanized farming in the West, which meant we could not compete...not when the basis of our farming is hundreds of subsitence farmers.

Take Cotton. Most cotton producers are losing heavily to the USA...simply because the USA outproduces them, and their famers get subsidies to compensate them for the losses they get from overproducing.

If you want to be a big exporter of produce, mechanized farming is the way.

Exporting raw agricultural produce is bad for our economy. Rather we should think of how to add value to our cash crops e.g cocoa, cashews, rubber etc before exporting it.

Ivory Coast is the biggest exporter of cocoa in Africa and also an importer of chocolate. Is there any sense in that?
Very correct. Did you know that cocoa is sold for #750k per metric ton? Meaning 750 naira per kilogram ( $1 per kg).
Now think of it, a bar of chocolate is about the same price $1 each.
I kg of cocoa can make up to 100 bars of chocolates.
The question is, who is making that profit off of the local farmers?
The answer is simple. Multinationals. They set these prices making it difficult for farmer to enjoy their sweat.
A full grown man with family would have to toll under the scorching sun for a whole day to process 1kg of cocoa just for a dollar. An amount a child in developed country can spend without a second thought on chocolate.
This life no balance!

Nigeria is not the giant of Africa because of crude oil, Nigeria is the giant of Africa because of its large population.

Our agricultural export for now have been converted into immoral decadence by a means called demo crazy
Whereby politicians loot at will and our foreign investors keep wondering if they can ever do business here, whilst our corruption practice is selling whereby countries know that we are good at stealing
Our importation of opportunities and enabling environment for business to strife keep suffering,

In fact more jobs will be created along the value chain if we process our raw materials, even if as semi-finished. But our problem is leadership, drawn from among the followers, who have chosen to amplify religious, ethnic and political biases above national interest of unity, growth, development, progress, prosperity and posterity. It's shameful.

Think of... I so much hate that phrase.
Have people not been thinking since all this time?
If you want to add value to raw goods you have to set up a factory to do so.
Have you tried setting up a factory before? Do you know the enormous cost involved in setting up one?
And at the end of the day, area boys and agberos will surround your facility, stealing and destroying? Even if you settle them, will that not be an added cost to your goods final price?
When the price come and cost past other country's own, who will now buy your hopplessly expensive product?
Whatever bastardness that is causing agberos and area boys to fill up the streets and destroy people's businesses is what should change.

Think of.. Think of indeed.
