This remains a mystery to me. I speculate that perhaps like me those friends were absent-minded and did not take their meds daily as required, or perhaps never bothered to start taking anything at all.

All that I know about the specter of AIDS is that it frightens me sufficiently to ensure that I never find out anything more about it than the need to do all humanly possible to avoid contracting it in the first place and to religiously avoid anyone I know or suspect might be afflicted with it forever.
