^It wasn't the northern governors who forced Babangida's hand but rather the small click of northern military officers who brought IBB to power. Actually IBB did MKO a favor by not handing over cos those guys swore to kill him which they eventually did anyway

But why didn't the northern military officers want MKO?

I thought they voted him in massively in the North and West na?

IBB should have just handed over...but the Northern guys were threatening fire and brimstone, and Nigeria was in a scary place that 1993.

But honestly, I do not understand why Northern governors in 1993 were threatening fire and brimstone if MKO took over. At best he had 4 years to do his thing, and if he messed up, he got thrown out. 8 years even. But fire and brimstone, and then we got a 'Interim government' and then Abacha came and swept away everything in Nov 1993. Four years later, Abacha was essentially running a personality cult. (It got so bad that people were wearing Abacha badges, buying Abacha televsion and cooking with Abacha stove. And you best not talk out too loud against the man).

We got 5 more years of army rule because some people could not wait 8 years for their turn, and could not accept defeat and were stoking the spirit of 1966-70.

That's when I understood that Nigerians are not interested in development, but only in their side winning.

(I didn't expect MKO to do great...I just wanted us to have civilian government like all our African neighbours. Benin, Ghana, etc were having presidental elections, presidents getting sworn in, and here we were in Nigeria...)

Not all Northern Governors/politicians were threatening. Mostly the Hausa Fulani ones did...

Remember, Lagos was still the Federal Capital and the incident with Orkar excising them from the country by decree made them a lot insecure especially as it concerns the access to Federal power and Southern hydrocarbon revenues.

Those threats were mostly rooted in an infantile insecurity and the fears about being as poor as Niger Republic than anything else. Hence, the rush to actualize Abuja as the "Capital".

In this life, have mentors. If they can't reach the final destination, you can get there on their behalf.

Historically, friends kill friends in Nigerian politics until recently.

IBB did Maman Vatsa (his bestman at wedding)
Abacha did Ken Saro Wiwa (his man friday) and almost nailed Oladipo Diya (his Vice)
Abiola was a "paddyman" to the cabal that did him in.

Oh well...

It’ll begins with the leadership, having the peoples interest much more than theirs. Abiola knowing how the common man feels, produced, went to market himself to sell things cheaper, subsidized foods and engaged good task force to oversee market regularities. This peoples knows what this man did, celebrating him but never want to act like him

Nobody was threatening fire and brimstone against Babangida. It was Babangida behind it all. His greed got the best of him. Who is Abacha to Babangida? He just chose to do the wrong thing at the expense of power and greed. He just lied on Northerners being a minority.

So you would sell bread that cost you N1500 to bake one loaf, at N200 a loaf?

How would you pay workers, taxes, suppliers, and even maintenance and upgrade costs for your bakery, talkless of your own family self.?

That subsidy you are talking about, what happens when costs of wheat, machinery, etc go up? What happens when your workers ask for a raise. Will government agree to raise your subsidy money?

Oga, things cost money. Subsides are good, but at the end, prices must go up. And subsides too cost money. Lots of money, and many times cause great losses, and force the economy to take on huge debts...because once costs of production rises, you end up taking more and more money from budget to pay for subsides

And how do you replace the money? Loans.

It is the acceptance of the status quo that has kept Nigeria backwards. I have nothing against BAT at all but the world knows that the process that got him enthroned was ridden with stinking corruption and obnoxious display of the sharp practices by INEC. Can we try fight the corruption in the electoral process no matter who is at the helm of affairs and leave a legacy for our children. Even if Peter Obi is not the winner but let it be seen that the process is CLEAN!!
Utopia expectations you guys exhibited before the election is the reason why you can't come in term with reality. There's no perfect election anywhere in the world and fact remains that divided opposition can never win ruling party even if election is conducted 100 times.

I thought we had civilian governors as at the election annulment?
Could it be it was the civilian governors who instigated the annulment?

Nobody threatened anything. IBB annuled the election out of his selfish desire to perpetuate himself in power. The point to be made is, IBB couldn't care less if MKO took over and got killed by any cabal. He was the real cabal, who was shell-shocked by Abiola's overwhelming victory at the polls, and imminent assumption of power.

Remember IBB had flimsily postponed the return to democracy countless times before that event?

That election was adjudged the freest and fairest in the history of Nigeria. Everybody from the North, South, East and West of Nigeria agreed that MKO was the clear winner!
But IBB later revealed that some people threatened to kill him, if he handed over power to Moshood Abiola, leading to an interim government, headed by Chief Earnest Shonekan.
RIP MKO, the great philanthropist!!!

I recommend you read Max Siollun's book 'Soldiers of fortune' which is by far the most comprehensive and unbiased account of contemporary modern Nigerian history . There you can get the inside details of what really went down behind the scenes

You are selling bread you baked at N1500 a loaf. Would you sell that bread at N200 per loaf to help the common man?

I will provide two answers to the possibility of bringing bread prices lower.

Short Version:: Producers can own critical factors of production or bargain for cheaper prices in the chain. The Government can provide incentives for competition and not the current cartel like behavior that only aims to raise prices in all the input chain to the final product.

Longer Version:

There has to be a way that Capitalism in the Nigerian context can be more efficient and competitive in order to benefit the consumer, than the current cartel-like behavior from diverse producers/importers that only seek to hike their prices collectively.

Here is an example. A typical Fast Food Chain in the US like McDonalds who franchises their name and model to tens of thousands of their fast food stores have carefully designed their business in such a way that 1. Every McDonald Store gets their food supplies and drinks only from McDonalds. 2. This means that McDonalds supplies every store the bread, meat patties, coffee, sugar, condiments etc., straight from farms they already own or plants that processes their own food products.

Next Question. How does McDonalds keep their prices low even when inflationary pressures everywhere is making bread, meat expensive?
Simple. They try as much as possible to either own or control as much as possible all the factors that go into production--and doing that on a mass scale pushes their prices cheaper. It means owning the wheat farm that makes the bread--or making deals with such farms and buying them cheaper at whole sale prices. This extends to sugar too, beef, milk etc., The competition in the entire fast food space ensures that companies are doing so too and trying to also own or control every production factor to make food cheaper. If a customer sees a McDonald burger suddenly become too expensive, they take their business to Burger King, Chipotle or Five Brothers. etc..

This is why creating incentives for large scale commercial farms that produce these is very important. The reason why most farmers in developed nations are rich is because there is an organized ready market that reduces speculation and wild profit-loss mood swings.

Abiola didn't bring IBB to power, he merely provided financial assistance to the coup plotters who overthrew the Shagari regime and of course he also lent his media outlets to launch viscous attacks against the Shagari government. Abiola had no power in 1983 or '85 to bring about a change in government.
